C9800-80-K9 Description
The C9800-80-K9 is a Cisco Catalyst 9800-80 wireless controller for large campus and distributed WLANs. The 2RU controller manages up to 6000 access points and 64,000 clients at up to 80 Gbps, with eight 10G SFP+ uplinks and optional 10G, 40G or 100G uplink modules. The controller boots without a license, but every access point it connects needs a Cisco DNA subscription under Smart Licensing.

C9800-80-K9 is the 2RU appliance in this group and is separated from C9800-40-K9 by scale: it manages up to 6000 access points and 64000 clients at up to 80 Gbps, against 2000 access points, 32000 clients and 40 Gbps on the 1RU C9800-40-K9. Sites above 2000 access points, or with more than 32000 clients, need C9800-80-K9 rather than C9800-40-K9. C9800-80-K9 also brings eight fixed 10G ports where C9800-40-K9 has four, so a controller that must terminate more 10G links in one chassis points to C9800-80-K9. C9800-CL-K9 runs as a virtual machine with no physical ports and is sized by profile, from 100 up to 6000 access points and 5 Gbps at most, so a design that has to run on a hypervisor or public cloud uses C9800-CL-K9, while a hardware controller above 5 Gbps stays with C9800-80-K9.
Ordering Checklist
- Uplink module: Add an optional hot-swappable module: C9800-18X1GE=, C9800-1X40GE=, C9800-2X40GE= or C9800-1X100GE=. The module is a separate line in the ordering table and is not part of C9800-80-K9.
- Power supply type: Order C9800-AC-1100W= for AC or C9800-DC-950W= for DC, with the second supply of the same type. Redundancy works only between power supplies of the same type.
- Redundancy port optic: Order GLC-SX-MMD or GLC-LH-SMD for the 1G SFP redundancy port. Only these two SFPs are supported in the SSO redundancy port.
- Access point subscription: Order a Cisco DNA Essentials or Advantage term of 3, 5 or 7 years for each access point, tied to a Smart Account. The controller starts without a license, but each connected access point needs a subscription, and Advantage is the default.
- DTLS license: Add LIC-C9800-DTLS-K9 to the order if DTLS encryption is required. The Catalyst 9800 Series DTLS License is a separate line item in the ordering table.
