CW9172H-RTG Description

The CW9172H-RTG is a Cisco Wireless 9172 Series wall-plate Wi-Fi 7 access point for hotel rooms and student housing units. The access point runs three concurrent 2x2 radios on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz at up to 9 Gbps and adds three 100M/1G LAN ports, one with PoE out, behind a 100M/1G/2.5G Multigigabit uplink. Full function with PoE out takes 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE at up to 41W, and Catalyst controllers must run Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1 or later.

CW9172H-RTG is the wall-plate model of this group: it adds 3x 100M/1G LAN ports, one PoE-out capable, and three concurrent 2×2 radios at up to 9 Gbps, whereas CW9171I-RTG lists no LAN ports. Rooms that must terminate a point-of-sale terminal or IP TV need CW9172H-RTG. Open areas with many clients move to CW9174I-RTG, whose 17.5 Gbps PHY and 5G uplink exceed the 2.5G uplink of both other models. Full function with PoE out requires 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE at up to 41W, while CW9171I-RTG runs fully on 802.3at PoE+ at 30W. CW9172H-RTG needs Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1; CW9171I-RTG and CW9174I-RTG need 17.18.2.

Ordering Checklist

  • Switch port PoE class: Use an 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE port (41W at the AP) for full 2×2 operation on all radios with 15.4W PoE out. On 802.3at PoE+ the PoE out is disabled, and on 802.3af only the 2.4 GHz radio runs at 1×1.
  • Controller platform: Use a Catalyst 9800 controller (physical or virtual), or a Catalyst 9000 switch with Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode, on Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1 or later. This is the highest software floor in the group, and an older release cannot onboard the AP.
  • Subscription line: Add LIC-CW-E (Cisco Wireless Essentials) or LIC-CW-A (Cisco Wireless Advantage), unless software is deliberately opted out at purchase. Without a subscription the hardware loses full functionality, and Cisco management and software updates are limited.
  • Wall-plate mount: Add the one that fits the room from CW-MNT-H1-00, CW-MNT-H3-00, CW-ACC-DESK1-00, CW-ACC-SPACER1-00, MA-MNT-MR-H1A or AIR-AP-BRACKET-W4=, since the wall plate installs on these parts.

Questions & Answers

  • What role does CW9172H-RTG play?

The CW9172H-RTG is the Ready To Go single-unit ordering form of the CW9172H, the wall-plate model of the Cisco Wireless 9172 Series of indoor Wi-Fi 7 access points with internal omnidirectional antennas.
  • Which software release is required for CW9172H-RTG?

CW9172H-RTG requires Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1 or later in Catalyst controller mode. Supported management includes Catalyst 9800 or an Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode.
  • Which controllers are compatible with CW9172H-RTG?

CW9172H-RTG supports Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series controllers or Catalyst 9000 Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode. Catalyst operation requires Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1 or later.
  • Which difference separates CW9172H-RTG from CW9171I-RTG?

The split between CW9172H-RTG and CW9171I-RTG is wired room service: the wall-plate CW9172H-RTG carries 3x 100M/1G LAN ports with one PoE-out capable port and serves all three bands concurrently, while the dual-radio CW9171I-RTG lists no LAN ports and runs 2.4 GHz plus either 5 GHz or 6 GHz at a time, so a room that must terminate a point-of-sale terminal or IP TV has no path on the CW9171I-RTG side.
  • Does CW9172H-RTG operate all three Wi-Fi 7 bands concurrently?

Yes, CW9172H-RTG provides concurrent 2x2 radios on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz with a listed PHY rate up to 9 Gbps.
  • How does input power affect CW9172H-RTG PoE output?

CW9172H-RTG provides 15.4W PoE output when powered by 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE. With 802.3at PoE+, all radios operate but PoE output is disabled.
  • Can CW9172H-RTG power a wired endpoint in the room?

Yes, CW9172H-RTG can power a wired endpoint from its PoE out LAN port when the access point receives 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE. It also provides three 100M/1G LAN ports.
  • When does the Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1 baseline not govern CW9172H-RTG?

Meraki cloud management does not use the Cisco IOS XE 17.17.1 controller baseline listed for CW9172H-RTG in Catalyst mode. Choose the management mode first so a Catalyst controller release requirement is not applied to a Meraki deployment.
