CW9174I-RTG Description

The CW9174I-RTG is a Cisco Wireless 9174 Series indoor Wi-Fi 7 access point with internal omnidirectional antennas for campus floors and branch offices. The access point pairs a 2x2 radio on 2.4 GHz with 4x4 radios on 5 and 6 GHz for PHY rates of about 17.5 Gbps over a 100M/1G/2.5G/5G Multigigabit uplink, and it draws up to 37W from 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE. On 802.3at PoE+ the power budget is 25.5W with all three radios still serving, and Catalyst controllers must run Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2 or later.

Application Scenarios

Mid-Density Campus Floors

Ceiling-mounted across office floors, classrooms and open work areas, the tri-band radios serve a mix of Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6E and older clients from a standard wiring-closet drop.

Smart-Building IoT Overlays

Workplaces running BLE 5.3 and 802.15.4 sensor traffic can use the dedicated IoT radio, so badges, asset tags and building-automation devices share the ceiling access point with client Wi-Fi.

Cloud-Managed Branch Offices

Branch sites run from the Meraki dashboard can onboard the global use hardware directly, and the same access point can later join a Catalyst 9800 controller if the site folds into the campus WLAN.

CW9174I-RTG and CW9174E-RTG share the same radios, 5G uplink and 37W power profile and differ in antennas: CW9174I-RTG has internal omnidirectional antennas, while CW9174E-RTG uses a DART8 connector for CW-ANT-T-O2-D8 omnidirectional or CW-ANT-T-D2-D8 directional antennas and operates down to -20 C instead of 0 C. Directional coverage or sub-zero rooms move the order to CW9174E-RTG, with an antenna added per unit. UWB and GNSS location radios or a 10G uplink require CW9176I-RTG, which draws 39W and runs from Cisco IOS XE 17.15.2 instead of 17.18.2.

Ordering Checklist

  • Power source: Use an 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE port (37W maximum), or the 54V DC jack with MA-PWR-50WAC. A position powered from the DC jack instead of UPOE needs the MA-PWR-50WAC adapter on the order.
  • Controller release: Use a Catalyst or Cisco Wireless 9800 controller, or a Catalyst 9000 embedded controller in SD-Access mode, on Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2 or later, or Meraki MR32.1.5 or later. A controller on an older release cannot onboard this model.
  • Subscription line: Add LIC-CW-E (Cisco Wireless Essentials) or LIC-CW-A (Cisco Wireless Advantage), unless software is deliberately opted out at purchase. Without a subscription the hardware loses full functionality, and Cisco management and software updates are limited.

Questions & Answers

  • What role does CW9174I-RTG serve?

The CW9174I-RTG is the Ready To Go single-unit ordering form of the Cisco Wireless 9174I, an indoor Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) access point with internal omnidirectional antennas in the Cisco Wireless 9174 Series.
  • Which auxiliary radios are built into CW9174I-RTG?

CW9174I-RTG includes a dedicated BLE 5.3 IoT radio and a tri-band scanning radio. Management can use Catalyst 9800 or Meraki cloud.
  • How is the CW9174I-RTG radio capacity distributed across bands?

CW9174I-RTG provides up to 10 spatial streams: 2x2 on 2.4 GHz and 4x4 on both 5 GHz and 6 GHz.
  • Why choose CW9174I-RTG over CW9174E-RTG?

The choice between CW9174I-RTG and CW9174E-RTG is an antenna and environment call: CW9174E-RTG trades the internal array for a DART8 connector that accepts CW-ANT-T-O2-D8 omnidirectional or CW-ANT-T-D2-D8 directional patch antennas and extends the operating floor to -20 C, but every unit then needs an antenna line item, while CW9174I-RTG installs as one piece with fixed 5 dBi and 6 dBi gains.
  • Which IoT and scanning radios does CW9174I-RTG provide?

CW9174I-RTG provides a dedicated BLE 5.3 IoT radio plus a tri-band scanning radio. Its three serving bands offer up to 10 spatial streams.
  • Which power sources support CW9174I-RTG?

CW9174I-RTG can use 37W UPOE under 802.3bt Class 5 or a 54V DC input with MA-PWR-50WAC. The DC path depends on MA-PWR-50WAC, while UPOE delivers power through the Ethernet uplink.
  • Can CW9174I-RTG use Meraki cloud management at a branch?

Yes, CW9174I-RTG can use Meraki cloud management across distributed branch sites. The global-use hardware can later move to supported Catalyst 9800 controller management.
  • Does CW9174I-RTG deliver full tri-band service on PoE+?

No, CW9174I-RTG requires 37W UPOE under 802.3bt Class 5 or a 54V DC input for its full power profile. A 25.5W PoE+ source imposes power limits.
