CW9179F and CW9178I-RTG share the same 24 Gbps quad-radio design and two 10G Multigigabit uplinks, and the housing is what separates them: CW9179F is a 10.0 lb convertible indoor/outdoor unit rated -20 to 60C excluding solar load, with 12 dBi directional antennas and four external antenna connectors, while CW9178I-RTG is a 4.1 lb indoor unit with internal omnidirectional antennas. Ceiling-mounted indoor floors that do not need directional cells move to CW9178I-RTG, which joins controllers from Cisco IOS XE 17.15.2 against 17.18.1 for CW9179F. Indoor areas with moderate client density and one cable drop per access point are served by CW9176I-RTG at 18 Gbps, one 10G port and 39W Class 5.

Ordering Checklist

  • Outdoor Environment Pack: Add CW-ACC-9179-B-00 to the order for outdoor deployment. IP67 protection applies only with the pack installed, and the housing is otherwise rated IP65.
  • Power source: Use a switch port supplying 802.3bt Class 6 UPOE at 47W, or a Cisco CW-INJ-8 power injector. 802.3at PoE+ runs all radios at 2×2 with reduced uplink speed.
  • Wireless subscription: Add LIC-CW-E (Essentials) or LIC-CW-A (Advantage) per access point, because the CW9179 Series needs a Cisco Networking Subscription.
  • Supported controllers: Use Catalyst 9800 Series controllers on Cisco IOS XE 17.18.1 or later, or Catalyst 9000 switches running the Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode. These are the controller platforms listed for the access point.
