CW9171I-RTG Description

The CW9171I-RTG is a Cisco Wireless 9171 Series indoor Wi-Fi 7 access point for hotels, student housing and branch offices with low to moderate device density. The access point runs two 2x2 radios, 2.4 GHz plus either 5 GHz or 6 GHz, with internal omnidirectional antennas, a 6.0 Gbps PHY rate and one 100M/1G/2.5G Multigigabit uplink. Full function needs 802.3at PoE+ at 30W, because 802.3af power leaves only the 2.4 GHz radio running at 1x1.

Retail And Clinic Floors

A retail sales floor or healthcare clinic waiting area gets client Wi-Fi from the ceiling-mounted access point, while its BLE 5.3 and 802.15.4 radios carry asset-tracking and wayfinding traffic.

Branch Office Wi-Fi 7 Upgrade

Small branch offices that already have 802.3at PoE+ switch ports can run the access point from those ports and join a Catalyst 9800 controller or Meraki cloud management.

CW9171I-RTG is the dual-radio model of this group, with 2×2 on 2.4 GHz plus either 5 GHz or 6 GHz, a 6.0 Gbps PHY ceiling and a 2.5G uplink, while CW9174I-RTG adds 4×4 on 5 and 6 GHz at about 17.5 Gbps and a 5G uplink. Sites with many clients per access point move to CW9174I-RTG. Full-function power is 802.3at PoE+ at 30W maximum on CW9171I-RTG, but 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE at 37W on CW9174I-RTG and 39W on CW9176I-RTG. UWB and GNSS radios or a 10G uplink require CW9176I-RTG. CW9171I-RTG and CW9174I-RTG need Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2, against 17.15.2 for CW9176I-RTG.

Ordering Checklist

  • Switch port PoE class: Use an 802.3at PoE+ port (30W maximum), or the 54V DC jack, for full 2×2 dual-radio operation. On 802.3af the AP runs only the 2.4 GHz radio at 1×1 with 5 GHz/6 GHz and USB off, on a 1G link.
  • Controller release: Run a Catalyst 9800 controller (such as C9800-80-K9 or CW9800M) on Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2 or later, or Meraki MR32.1.5 or later. A controller on an older release cannot onboard this model.
  • Subscription line: Add LIC-CW-E (Cisco Wireless Essentials) or LIC-CW-A (Cisco Wireless Advantage), unless software is deliberately opted out at purchase. Without a subscription the hardware loses full functionality, and Cisco management and software updates are limited.
  • Mounting bracket: Add AIR-AP-BRACKET-1 or AIR-AP-BRACKET-2, since the AP mounts on one of these two bracket PIDs.

Questions & Answers

  • What type of compact access point is CW9171I-RTG?

CW9171I-RTG is the Ready To Go single-unit form of the compact indoor Cisco Wireless 9171I Wi-Fi 7 access point for low- to moderate-density spaces.
  • Which Ethernet uplink does CW9171I-RTG provide?

CW9171I-RTG provides one 100M/1G/2.5G Multigigabit RJ-45 uplink. It can receive 802.3at PoE+ or 54V DC power with a 30W maximum.
  • Which management platforms support CW9171I-RTG?

CW9171I-RTG supports Cisco Catalyst 9800 controller management or Meraki cloud management for global use. The access point has a maximum 802.11be PHY rate of 6.0 Gbps.
  • How can CW9171I-RTG be powered?

CW9171I-RTG can use 802.3at PoE+ or a 54V DC input, with a listed 30W maximum. The access point has internal omnidirectional antennas.
  • Can CW9171I-RTG operate its 5 GHz and 6 GHz radios at the same time?

No, CW9171I-RTG is a dual-radio access point that runs 2.4 GHz plus either 5 GHz or 6 GHz. It does not operate all three bands concurrently.
  • Which subscription does CW9171I-RTG require?

CW9171I-RTG requires a Cisco Wireless Essentials or Cisco Wireless Advantage subscription. The entitlement is separate from the access point hardware.
  • Which smart-space deployments benefit from CW9171I-RTG?

CW9171I-RTG supports smart-space use through integrated BLE 5.3 and 802.15.4 radios. Retail floors and clinic waiting areas can use those radios for asset tracking or wayfinding alongside client Wi-Fi.
  • When is the 2.5G uplink on CW9171I-RTG a design limit?

CW9171I-RTG becomes a poor fit when the wired access design standardizes on 5G or 10G Ethernet drops. CW9174I-RTG and CW9176I-RTG provide higher-speed uplinks than the single 2.5G Multigigabit port on CW9171I-RTG.
