CW9174E-RTG Description

The CW9174E-RTG is a Cisco Wireless 9174E tri-band Wi-Fi 7 indoor access point with a DART8 connector for external antennas, built for warehouses, docks and finished ceilings. The AP has up to 10 spatial streams as 2x2 plus 4x4 plus 4x4, a 17.5 Gbps peak PHY rate, one 100M/1G/2.5G/5G Multigigabit uplink and a -20 to 50°C operating range. The full radio profile draws 37W from 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE or 54V DC, and 802.3at PoE+ at 25.5W lowers the uplink to 2.5G.

Cold Docks And Staging Bays

In an unheated loading dock or a chilled staging bay, the AP keeps serving handheld scanners at temperatures down to -20°C.

Finished Ceilings And Lobbies

Above the suspended ceiling of an office or lobby, the UL 2043 plenum rating permits placement in the air space while a ceiling omni antenna is the only visible part.

CW9174E-RTG and CW9174I-RTG run the same 2×2 + 4×4 + 4×4 radios, up to 10 spatial streams and 5G mGig uplink at a 37W maximum, so the split is the antenna: CW9174E-RTG takes DART8 external antennas and works from -20 to 50°C, while CW9174I-RTG has internal omnidirectional antennas and a 0 to 50°C range, so an unheated dock or a directional aisle cell needs CW9174E-RTG. CW9176I-RTG moves to 4×4 on all three bands, an 18 Gbps peak rate, a 10G uplink and GNSS and UWB radios at 39W, with no external antenna option, and it needs only IOS XE 17.15.2 against 17.18.2 for the other two.

Ordering Checklist

  • External antenna: Add one DART8 antenna: CW-ANT-T-O2-D8 (ceiling omni), CW-ANT-T-D2-D8 (75×75 directional patch) or CW-ANT-T-O4-R (dipoles). The AP has no internal antenna and is ordered without one.
  • Dipole cable: Add CW-CAB-001-D8-R4 with CW-ANT-T-O4-R dipoles, because the dipoles attach to the DART8 connector only through this cable.
  • Controller release: Run Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2 or later, or Meraki MR32.1.5 or later. Earlier releases do not support this model.
  • Switch PoE class: Use 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE or 54V DC (MA-PWR-50WAC) for 37W; 802.3at PoE+ gives 25.5W. On PoE+ the uplink drops to 2.5G and USB to 2.5W.
  • Controller platform: Use Catalyst 9800 controllers such as C9800-40-K9, C9800-CL or CW9800M, or a Catalyst 9000 embedded controller in SD-Access mode. Other controllers cannot manage this AP.
  • Subscription: Add LIC-CW-E (Wireless Essentials) or LIC-CW-A (Wireless Advantage). The AP can be bought without it, but full functionality needs an active subscription.

Questions & Answers

  • What type of access point is CW9174E-RTG?

CW9174E-RTG is an external-antenna Cisco Wireless 9174E Wi-Fi 7 access point with tri-band radios and up to 10 spatial streams.
  • Which power inputs does CW9174E-RTG accept?

CW9174E-RTG accepts 802.3bt Class 5 UPOE or 54V DC for its 37W maximum profile. It can also operate from 25.5W 802.3at PoE+.
  • How can CW9174E-RTG be managed?

CW9174E-RTG supports Cisco Catalyst 9800 controller management or Meraki cloud management. The global-use access point can operate under either supported management architecture.
  • What changes between CW9174E-RTG and CW9174I-RTG?

The split between CW9174E-RTG and CW9174I-RTG is antenna form on identical radio hardware: both run the 2x2 + 4x4 + 4x4 10-spatial-stream layout with a 5G mGig uplink at a 37W maximum, so the CW9174E-RTG buys coverage shaping through its DART8 connector at the cost of a separate antenna line item, while the CW9174I-RTG serves a standard open-ceiling cell with nothing extra to order.
  • Does CW9174E-RTG require separately ordered antennas?

Yes, CW9174E-RTG uses a DART8 connector for external antennas that are ordered separately. Its software baselines are Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2 and Meraki MR32.1.5.
  • Which software releases support CW9174E-RTG?

CW9174E-RTG requires Cisco IOS XE 17.18.2 for Catalyst management or Meraki MR32.1.5 for cloud management. The access point supports up to 10 spatial streams across its three bands.
  • Can CW9174E-RTG operate in cold staging areas?

Yes, CW9174E-RTG can operate in receiving docks and chilled staging areas within its -20 to 50°C range. The external-antenna design still requires an antenna plan suited to the space.
  • How does CW9174E-RTG differ from CW9174E-CFG?

CW9174E-RTG is a Ready To Go single-unit pack, while CW9174E-CFG uses a configure-to-order multi-unit pack. Both PIDs represent the same access point hardware.
