CW9172I-RTG Description

The CW9172I-RTG is a Cisco Wireless 9172I Wi-Fi 7 indoor access point for low- to medium-density offices and branches managed by Catalyst 9800 controllers. The AP has internal omnidirectional antennas, six spatial streams as 2x2:2 on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz, a 9 Gbps peak PHY rate and a 100M/1G/2.5G Multigigabit uplink. The full tri-radio profile with USB needs 32W from 802.3bt Class 5 PoE, while 802.3af power limits the AP to one 1x1 2.4 GHz radio on a 1G link.

Application Scenarios

Open Office Floors

On an office floor, the AP mounts on the ceiling and serves laptops and phones on the 6 GHz band, joining a Catalyst 9800 controller over a single 2.5G Multigigabit cable.

Retail And Branch Sites

A retail store or branch office can run the AP in tri-radio mode with separate 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz radios, and the integrated BLE radio supports IoT sensors on the same hardware.

Classrooms And Meeting Rooms

Rooms with moderate client counts can use the dual-radio profile, which puts 4×4 on 5 GHz for devices that cannot use 6 GHz.

CW9172I-RTG and CW9172I are the same Cisco Wireless 9172I hardware; the difference is the ordering path, with CW9172I-RTG in the RTG (Ready to Go) device category and CW9172I as the global-use device SKU, so ports and radios are identical. Sites that need a wall-plate AP with three 1Gbps LAN ports, a passthrough port and PoE out should order CW9172H, which needs IOS XE 17.17.1 or later against 17.15.2b for the 9172I and lists no DC power jack. CW9174I is the move for denser designs, with up to 10 spatial streams and a 5 Gbps uplink against 6 spatial streams and 2.5G mGig, and its software release comes from the 9174 documentation.

Ordering Checklist

  • Packaging form: CW9172I-RTG is the Ready To Go single-unit form; the -CFG form of the same hardware is configured to order and can ship multi-pack.
  • Supported controllers: Use a Catalyst 9800 controller (C9800-80-K9, C9800-40-K9, C9800-L-C-K9, C9800-L-F-K9, C9800-CL) or a CW9800H1, CW9800H2, CW9800M or CW9800L, on IOS-XE 17.15.2b or later for CW9172I. The AP joins only the listed controllers, and on-premises control needs this IOS-XE baseline.
  • Subscription: Add LIC-CW-E (Cisco Wireless Essentials) or LIC-CW-A (Cisco Wireless Advantage), or opt out of software at purchase. Full function needs a valid subscription, which the order does not add unless it is selected.
