The C9800-40-K9 is a Cisco Catalyst 9800-40 Wireless Controller, a fixed 1RU appliance that runs Cisco IOS XE for enterprise campus WLANs. The controller manages up to 2000 access points and 32,000 clients at up to 40 Gbps through four 10G/1G SFP+/SFP data ports, with a maximum power draw of 381W. The data ports run only at 10G or 1G, with no 10/100 Mbps operation, and connect to a switch rather than directly to access points.

On a corporate or university campus with up to 2000 access points, the controller sits in a data center rack and reaches the distribution switches over 10G SFP+ links.
A retail or banking group can keep its branch access points in Cisco FlexConnect mode, up to 100 per site, while one controller at headquarters manages them all.
Hospitals and other sites where clients must stay connected through a controller failure run two controllers as an SSO 1:1 active-standby pair linked over the redundancy ports.

C9800-40-K9 and C9800-80-K9 share the same Cisco IOS XE 16.10.1 baseline, but C9800-80-K9 scales to 6000 access points, 64,000 clients and 80 Gbps in 2RU, against 2000 access points, 32,000 clients and 40 Gbps in 1RU for C9800-40-K9. A design above 2000 access points, or one that needs 40G or 100G uplink modules, moves to the 2RU controller. CW9800M keeps the 1RU size and 32,000 clients but takes up to 3000 access points at 50 Gbps with two 25G SFP28 ports, provided the network can run Cisco IOS XE 17.14.1 or later. Sites with 500 access points or fewer can use C9800-L-F-K9, which manages 250 access points as shipped and 500 with its Performance license.
Ordering Checklist
- Access point subscriptions: Order a Cisco DNA Essentials or Advantage subscription of 3, 5 or 7 years for every access point, tied to a Smart Account. The controller boots without a license, but access points cannot join without one.
- Unified licensing release: LIC-CW-E and LIC-CW-A Cisco Networking Subscriptions also cover C9800-40-K9, but they need Cisco IOS XE 17.15.2 on the controller. An older image cannot consume them.
- Standby controller: Add a second controller when the design uses SSO 1:1 active standby or N+1 redundancy. SSO pairs an active unit with a standby unit, so the HA design needs two controllers.
- Redundant power supply: Add C9800-AC-750W R= for the optional PEM 1 slot. The base unit runs on PEM 0 alone, so power redundancy needs this separate line.
- Redundancy port optic: Order GLC-SX-MMD or GLC-LH-SMD for the 1G SFP redundancy port. No other SFP is supported on that port.
- Data port optics: Order 10G SFP+ or 1G SFP modules from the supported list, such as SFP-10G-SR or GLC-LH-SMD, for ports TE0 to TE3. The ports do not run at 10/100 Mbps.
- DTLS license: Add LIC-C9800-DTLS-K9 when DTLS encryption is required. The DTLS license is a separate line in the ordering table.
