The 9811 and 9841 are grayscale, PoE Class 2 phones with no KEM support, built for desks that need reliable calling and little else; the 9811 has no USB port at all, while the 9841 carries a single low-power USB-A port. The 9851 moves to a color display, six line keys with 46 programmable lines, USB-A and USB-C ports, and single-KEM support. The 9861 and 9871 add Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, a built-in ThousandEyes agent for network path monitoring, and the deepest AI audio feature set, including noise removal for incoming audio.
AI audio is tiered too: outbound background noise removal runs on every model except the 9811, while inbound noise removal and narrowband-to-wideband audio enhancement are reserved for the 9861 and 9871.
9841 vs 9851: Where the Price Step Buys Real Capability
The 9851 is the first model that behaves like a manager’s phone. Against the 9841 it adds a color display, six physical keys against four, a jump from 4 to 46 supported lines, both USB port types for headsets and charging, and KEM eligibility. It also moves from PoE Class 2 to Class 3, which matters for switch PoE budgets. If the user handles more than a couple of shared lines or needs a wired USB headset, the 9851 is the sensible floor.
9861 vs 9871: Buttons or Touchscreen
Both top models share the 5-inch display size, wireless radios, ThousandEyes, and triple-KEM capability, so the decision is the interface. The 9861 keeps 10 physical line keys and up to 130 lines on CUCM, which suits receptionists and anyone who dials by muscle memory. The 9871 replaces the key field with a 1280×720 touchscreen and handles up to 128 lines. Feature depth is nearly identical; pick by how the user actually operates the phone.
Why the 9811 Is the Odd One Out
The 9811 is the only model with a 10/100 Ethernet switch rather than gigabit, ships with a narrowband handset by default, and has no USB ports. It also skips hot desking, one-button meeting join, and Webex Companion, and it requires CUCM 14 or later, while every other model registers to CUCM 12.5 and later. On a desk shared with a PC that has gigabit cabling, the 9811’s 10/100 pass-through port becomes the bottleneck, so keep it to lobbies, break rooms, and other spots where nothing sits behind the phone.
Which Call Control Platforms the 9800 Series Supports
Per the March 2026 data sheet, the certified list is CUCM (12.5 and later; 14 and later for the 9811, with a device package required on some versions), Webex Calling, Webex Dedicated Instance, Cisco BroadWorks, Microsoft SIP Gateway, and Asterisk. There is no separate MPP or enterprise firmware to choose at order time: one PhoneOS image covers every platform, which removes the firmware-variant mistake that complicated 7800 and 8800 purchasing.
One sizing limit hides in the fine print: a 9800 registered to Webex Calling or an open SIP platform supports up to 16 SIP lines, while CUCM and Webex Dedicated Instance support up to 130. A reception desk that lives on shared-line appearances belongs on CUCM, or needs its line plan rechecked before a cloud migration.
Using the 9800 with CUCM and a Branch Voice Gateway
Most branch deployments pair CUCM with a local router that terminates PSTN circuits. That role is unaffected by the phone generation: an ISR4331 or Catalyst 8300 carrying the analog voice cards and DSP resources its platform supports, such as the NIM-4FXS or NIM-2FXS-4FXO for ports and the NIM-PVDM series for DSPs, is a trunk between the phone system and the PSTN, and it never needs to know which phone model placed the call. The same hardware serves as a Local Gateway when call control moves to Webex Calling.
The data sheet also lists Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) support, so a branch full of 9800 phones can fall back to the local gateway router for dial tone when the WAN link to CUCM drops. Can the 9800 Register to a CME Router?
No. Cisco’s Phone Feature Support Guide for Unified CME and SRST, last updated April 2019 and covering releases through Unified CME 12.6, ends its endpoint list at the 7800 and 8800 series, and no CME platform appears in the 9800’s certified platform table. The router side is not the problem: per Cisco’s Unified CME platform compatibility matrix, CME 14.1 runs on ISR 4000, Catalyst 8200, and Catalyst 8300 from IOS XE 17.6.1a onward. The endpoint side is: the phone has no path to register to it.
A site running CME as its phone system has two workable routes. Keep the CME estate on 7800 series and 8800 series hardware, which CME fully supports and which remains available new and refurbished. Or move call control to CUCM or Webex Calling and demote the router to the gateway role above, after which the 9800 becomes orderable.
PoE Class, Power Adapters, and KEM Rules
No 9800 phone ships with a power supply. Cisco’s 2026 end-of-life notices for the 7800 series state this directly for migration planning: the 9800 series is powered by PoE, and regional power supplies are ordered separately as Cisco Power Adapter 3 (CP-PWR-ADPT-3 with a region suffix). If your switch ports deliver PoE, nothing extra is needed; the 9811 and 9841 draw Class 2, and the 9851, 9861, and 9871 draw Class 3.

The DP-9800-KEM adds 20 physical keys across 2 pages and draws all of its power from the host phone. A reception build that needs two or three KEMs on a 9861 or 9871 must include the power adapter in the order even when the switch port offers PoE.

The NR suffix is the trap in this table: on the 9861 and 9871 it deletes the wireless radios, while on TAA 9841 and 9851 part numbers it only removes the NFC tag used for onboarding. Which 9800 Model Replaces Your 7800 or 8800 Phone
If your fleet runs CME, or you are extending an existing deployment with matching handsets and accessory pools, buying more 8800 series hardware remains a legitimate choice; the core desk models 8811, 8841, 8851, and 8861 had no end-of-life notice published as of July 2026. Zoom Phone is not in the 9800’s certified platform table as of the March 2026 data sheet. Community reports describe provisioning 9800 phones as generic SIP devices with reduced features, but that is not a basis for a fleet purchase; check Zoom’s certified hardware list before committing.
Does any 9800 model support video calls?
