C9200-NM-4G Description

The C9200-NM-4G is a Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series field-replaceable network module that adds four 1 Gigabit Ethernet SFP slots to the uplink bay of a standard Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switch, such as C9200-24T, C9200-24P, C9200-48T, or C9200-48P. It accepts standard 1G SFP optics only; Cisco documentation does not bring up an SFP+ optic in these slots and logs an error if one is inserted. The module is hot-swappable and installs in the single uplink slot every Catalyst 9200 (modular) switch carries, where a network module or a C9200-NM-BLANK is required for the switch to run. Cisco confines its host compatibility to standard 1G Catalyst 9200 SKUs: it is not supported on the Multigigabit C9200-24PXG or C9200-48PXG models, and it does not apply to the fixed-uplink Catalyst 9200L or compact Catalyst 9200CX lines, which have no network module slot at all. It carries no independent license PID, since its license tier follows the Network Essentials or Network Advantage entitlement of the host switch it is installed in.

Application Scenarios

Standard 1G Uplink Aggregation

Installed in the uplink bay of a Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink access switch to aggregate 1G fiber links from the wiring closet toward distribution or core equipment.

Factory-Default Module Replacement

Used as a like-for-like spare part for a Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switch that already carries a 1G SFP uplink module, since the module and switch chassis ship and are ordered as separate line items.

In-Service Uplink Retrofit

Installed by hot-swap (OIR) into a Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switch that is already in production, when a closet gains a fiber path to the distribution layer after the initial deployment and needs 1G SFP uplinks without a chassis outage.

Related Ordering Boundary

Not Interchangeable With C9200-NM-4X On Multigigabit Hosts

Cisco documents C9200-NM-4G as unsupported on the Multigigabit C9200-24PXG and C9200-48PXG switches; those hosts require C9200-NM-4X, which Cisco lists as compatible with both standard 1G and Multigigabit Catalyst 9200 SKUs.

No Cross-Family Slot Fit With C9200L Or C9200CX

The Catalyst 9200 (modular) network module slot that accepts C9200-NM-4G does not exist on the fixed-uplink Catalyst 9200L or the compact Catalyst 9200CX lines, so an order for either of those switch families cannot use this module regardless of port-speed needs.

Selection Guide

1. Host Platform Determines Eligibility Before Port Count

C9200-NM-4G only installs in the network module slot of standard 1G Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switches; an order for a Catalyst 9200L, Catalyst 9200CX, or a Multigigabit C9200-24PXG/C9200-48PXG switch needs a different uplink solution regardless of how many 1G uplink ports the design calls for.

2. SFP-Only Media Plan Rules Out 10G Uplinks

Because C9200-NM-4G only links up with standard 1G SFP optics and does not bring up SFP+ optics, a design that needs any 10G uplink capacity on the same switch has to move to C9200-NM-4X instead of trying to mix SFP+ optics into this module.

3. Empty Slot Still Needs A Blank Module

A Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switch cannot run with its uplink slot left empty, so an order that skips C9200-NM-4G, C9200-NM-4X, or another network module still needs to add C9200-NM-BLANK to keep the slot populated.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Exact module PID

C9200-NM-4G on the order line, not C9200-NM-4X, C9200-NM-2Y, C9200-NM-2Q, or C9200-NM-BLANK

Prevents receiving a module with the wrong port speed, port count, or host-platform boundary

Switch platform

Target switch is a standard 1G Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink SKU, not C9200-24PXG, C9200-48PXG, Catalyst 9200L, or Catalyst 9200CX

Cisco documents C9200-NM-4G as unsupported on Multigigabit hosts and not applicable to the 9200L or 9200CX lines

Optic type

Only standard 1G SFP optics are planned for this module’s slots

An SFP+ optic inserted into a C9200-NM-4G slot does not link up and logs an error

OIR wait interval

Allow 6-8 seconds between inserting or removing the module during installation or replacement

Cisco documents this interval as necessary to avoid module identification failures

Transceiver insertion spacing

Allow roughly 5 seconds between inserting multiple SFP transceivers into module ports

Reduces the risk of a port entering an error-disabled state during installation

Cabling before OIR

Remove all cables and installed transceivers before inserting or removing the module

Cisco documents that leaving fiber connected during module OIR can drive affected interfaces into an error-disabled state

Spare vs new-build ordering

C9200-NM-4G for factory-installed ordering or C9200-NM-4G= for spare/replacement ordering

Keeps the PID aligned with the intended ordering path

Questions & Answers

  • What does C9200-NM-4G provide?

C9200-NM-4G provides 4 1GE SFP uplink slots for Catalyst 9200 modular switches that need fiber links without 10G uplink speed.
  • When does C9200-NM-4G fit a Catalyst 9200 deployment?

C9200-NM-4G fits small closets, branch uplinks, legacy fiber runs, or aggregation links where four 1GE SFP connections cover capacity needs.
  • Can C9200-NM-4G use 10G SFP+ modules?

C9200-NM-4G is a 1GE SFP module, so 10G links require C9200-NM-4X or another higher-speed Catalyst 9200 uplink module.
  • How is C9200-NM-4G different from C9200-NM-4X?

    C9200-NM-4G gives 4 1GE SFP ports, while C9200-NM-4X gives 4 10GE SFP+ ports for higher-speed uplink or server links.
  • Does C9200-NM-4G work in C9200L switches?

C9200-NM-4G is for Catalyst 9200 modular uplink switches; C9200L models use fixed uplinks and do not accept C9200 network modules.
  • What SFP details matter for C9200-NM-4G?

C9200-NM-4G planning checks 1GE SFP transceiver part number, multimode or single-mode fiber, distance, connector type, and Cisco compatibility notes.
  • Can C9200-NM-4G ports be used for non-uplink devices?

C9200-NM-4G ports can carry Ethernet links to switches, routers, firewalls, or fiber endpoints, but they do not deliver PoE.
  • What migration question fits C9200-NM-4G?

C9200-NM-4G fits migrations that keep 1GE fiber optics and patching while replacing older access switches with Catalyst 9200 modular models.
