C9200-STACK-KIT Description

The C9200-STACK-KIT is a Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series stacking accessory kit that adds StackWise-160 stacking capability, at 160 Gbps of stack bandwidth, to Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switches. Each kit contains two data stack adapters and one data stack cable, with the cable shipping as the 50 cm STACK-T4-50CM by default and 1 m or 3 m cable options available for wider rack spacing. It installs on the two identical chassis stacking ports of a Catalyst 9200 switch, joining up to eight switches of the same Network Essentials or Network Advantage license tier into a single stacked logical switch. Cisco documents this kit for Catalyst 9200 SKUs only: it is not interchangeable with the C9200L-STACK-KIT used on Catalyst 9200L (fixed-uplink) switches, since the two platforms run different StackWise bandwidth classes and cannot mix-stack with each other.

Spare PID

C9200-STACK-KIT=

Application Scenarios

Access-Layer Stack Formation

Added to a set of Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink switches in a wiring closet to join them into a single StackWise-160 logical switch instead of managing each unit separately.

Stack Capacity Expansion

Used to add an additional Catalyst 9200 switch to an existing stack, up to the documented 8-member limit, when access-layer port count needs to grow without adding a second management point.

Rack-Distance Cable Matching

Ordered with the 1 m or 3 m stacking cable option instead of the default 50 cm cable when stacked Catalyst 9200 switches are mounted with wider rack spacing between units.

Related Ordering Boundary

Not Interchangeable With C9200L-STACK-KIT

C9200-STACK-KIT is documented for Catalyst 9200 (modular-uplink) switches only; Catalyst 9200L (fixed-uplink) switches use the separate C9200L-STACK-KIT for StackWise-80 at 80 Gbps, and Cisco does not document either kit as usable on the other platform.

No Cross-Platform Stacking Even With Both Kits On Hand

Because Catalyst 9200 and Catalyst 9200L run different StackWise bandwidth classes, having both C9200-STACK-KIT and C9200L-STACK-KIT available does not let a Catalyst 9200 switch and a Catalyst 9200L switch join the same stack.

Selection Guide

1. Modular Uplink Slot Stays Independent Of The Stack Decision

Catalyst 9200 switches carry a field-replaceable network module slot that the fixed-uplink Catalyst 9200L family does not have, so a design already committed to modular uplinks for future 10G/25G/40G migration keeps that path only by staying on C9200-STACK-KIT and the C9200 hardware line, not by substituting the lower-bandwidth C9200L kit.

2. Mismatched License Tiers Block A Clean Stack Merge

Cisco documentation requires every Catalyst 9200 switch in the same stack to carry the same Network Essentials or Network Advantage tier; a plan that stacks a mixed set of -E and -A switches needs a license alignment step before the stack forms, or the mismatched member should be moved to a separate stack.

3. Default Cable Length Assumes Adjacent Rack Mounting

The kit ships with a 50 cm stacking cable by default, which fits switches mounted directly adjacent in the same rack; a layout that spaces stacked Catalyst 9200 switches further apart, such as across rack units or between racks, needs the 1 m or 3 m cable option ordered up front instead of the default length.

4. Mixed Port And PoE Variants Do Not Block Stacking

Different Catalyst 9200 port and PoE variants, and different installed network modules, can join the same stack ring, so the kit purchase decision only tracks the StackWise-160 platform boundary and license tier, not port count or PoE class differences between members.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Exact kit PID

C9200-STACK-KIT for new-build ordering or C9200-STACK-KIT= for spare/replacement ordering

Keeps the PID aligned with the intended ordering path

Switch platform

Target switches are Catalyst 9200 (modular-uplink) models, not Catalyst 9200L (fixed-uplink) models

C9200L-STACK-KIT is required instead for Catalyst 9200L switches, and the two kits are not interchangeable

Stack cable length

Whether the default STACK-T4-50CM cable fits the rack layout, or STACK-T4-1M/STACK-T4-3M is needed

An undersized cable cannot physically reach between switches mounted further apart

License tier alignment

All switches planned for the same stack carry the same Network Essentials or Network Advantage tier

Cisco documents stacking as valid only between same-tier Catalyst 9200 switches

Stack size

Total planned stack members do not exceed 8 Catalyst 9200 switches

Cisco documents 8 switches as the maximum members in a single stack

Kit quantity per stack

One stack kit ordered per switch joining the stack, since the kit is not included by default with the switch

An order that omits the kit line leaves the switch without stacking adapters or a stacking cable

Questions & Answers

  • What does C9200-STACK-KIT add to a Catalyst 9200 deployment?

C9200-STACK-KIT adds the StackWise-160 hardware needed for modular Catalyst 9200 switches to operate as one managed stack with shared control and forwarding behavior.
  • Can C9200-STACK-KIT be used on Catalyst 9200L fixed models?

C9200-STACK-KIT is for modular C9200 switches; C9200L fixed models use their own StackWise-80 hardware, so mixing the kits creates the wrong stack design.
  • How many switches can a C9200-STACK-KIT based stack support?

Cisco lists C9200 modular stacking around StackWise-160 with up to eight members, giving access closets one control plane instead of separate switch islands.
  • Does C9200-STACK-KIT change the switch license level?

C9200-STACK-KIT is stacking hardware only; license level still follows the Catalyst 9200 switch SKU, software subscription, and feature set already ordered.
  • What cable planning matters after ordering C9200-STACK-KIT?

C9200-STACK-KIT supplies the stack module requirement, but the final build still needs matching StackWise cables sized for rack adjacency and ring continuity.
  • Why do C9200-STACK-KIT questions often mention mixed stacking?

C9200-STACK-KIT discussions mention mixed stacking because Catalyst 9200 modular and 9200L fixed models use different stacking architectures and cannot form one supported ring.
  • Is C9200-STACK-KIT enough for a resilient access closet stack?

C9200-STACK-KIT enables the stack fabric, while resilient access design also depends on dual uplinks, power redundancy, member numbering, and planned software maintenance windows.
  • When does C9200-STACK-KIT matter more than adding uplink ports?

C9200-STACK-KIT matters when operations need one switch stack with simplified management and local port expansion, rather than separate switches linked only by uplinks.
