The C9606R-48S-BN-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series modular switch bundle on the 6-slot Catalyst 9606R chassis for campus core and distribution layers with 1G fiber links. The switch provides 48 1G SFP ports on a C9600-LC-48S line card, four line-card slots, two supervisor slots, four power-supply bays and 8 RU of rack space. The C9600-LC-48S runs only with the C9600-SUP-1 supervisor from Cisco IOS XE 17.2.1, and C9600X-SUP-2 does not support it.

Product Performance
Key Features
The C9600-LC-48S is supported only on C9600-SUP-1. That supervisor gives the chassis up to 9.6 Tbps of system switching capacity and 2.4 Tbps per slot, forwarded by three UADP 3.0 ASICs.
Each line card holds 48 SFP ports at 1G, and four line-card slots take the chassis to a maximum of 192 1G ports. A C9600-LC-48S draws up to 160 W.
The line card needs Cisco IOS XE 17.2.1 or later on C9600-SUP-1, and C9600X-SUP-2 is not supported.
C9600-SUP-1 holds up to 27,000 IPv4 and 13,500 IPv6 security ACL entries and 16,000 and 8,000 QoS ACL entries, depending on the SDM template.
The supervisor records up to 384,000 full NetFlow entries, 128,000 per ASIC, and buffers bursts in up to 108 MB of packet memory, 36 MB per ASIC.
Four power-supply bays run in combined mode by default or in N+1 redundant mode. Two supplies are the minimum, and a fully loaded chassis on 110V input needs three.
Application Scenarios
At a campus distribution point, the switch terminates 1G SFP fiber uplinks from floor access switches on its 48-port line card and forwards the traffic toward the core.
In a mid-size building core where the fiber plant is already cabled for 1G, the chassis keeps the SFP optics in service and uses its second supervisor slot for engine redundancy.
A campus services block can connect firewalls, wireless controllers and other 1G fiber-attached appliances, with up to 192 1G ports across the four line-card slots.

C9606R-48S-BN-A is the 1G SFP model of this group: its C9600-LC-48S line card runs 48 ports at 1 Gbps with 96 Gbps per slot and is supported only on C9600-SUP-1 from Cisco IOS XE 17.2.1, so C9600X-SUP-2 cannot be used with it. Sites that need 10G or 25G SFP links on the same chassis move to C9600-LC-48YL, which runs 25G, 10G and 1G on C9600-SUP-1, or 50G, 25G and 10G on C9600X-SUP-2 from Cisco IOS XE 17.7.1. Sites that need RJ45 multigigabit copper from 10G down to 10M use C9600-LC-48TX, which works with either supervisor.
Ordering Checklist
- Supervisor engine: Use C9600-SUP-1 only; a redundant second engine is C9600-SUP-1/2. C9600X-SUP-2 and C9600X-SUP-2/2 cannot run the C9600-LC-48S line card.
- Added line cards: Any card added to the other slots must support C9600-SUP-1; C9600X-LC-56YL4C and C9600X-LC-32CD do not. The chassis takes up to four line cards, and an unsupported card will not work.
- Supervisor SSD: CCW adds C9K-F2-SSD-960GB by default; C9K-F2-SSD-240GB or C9K-F2-SSD-480GB can be chosen instead. The default capacity applies unless it is changed in the configurator.
- Power supplies: CCW adds two C9600-PWR-2KWAC by default; C9600-PWR-3KWAC and C9600-PWR-2KWDC are the alternatives. The default AC choice does not fit a DC feed or a design that needs 3000W supplies.
- Power cords: Select a cord for each C9600-PWR-2KWAC, such as CAB-TA-NA, CAB-TA-EU or CAB-TA-UK. Cords are chosen separately, and the supply is not complete without them.
- Subscription term: Select a Cisco DNA Advantage term of 3, 5 or 7 years; CCW defaults to 5 years. The tier has to match the Network Advantage license that ships with the hardware.
