The C9600-LC-40YL4CD is a Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series combo line card for Catalyst 9606R chassis in campus aggregation and core designs. The card has 40 SFP56 ports, 2 QSFP56 ports and 2 QSFP-DD ports, and it installs in slots 1, 2, 5 and 6 with either C9600X-SUP-2 or C9600-SUP-1. QSFP-DD operation, including 400G, needs C9600X-SUP-2, and the card requires Cisco IOS XE 17.7.1 or later.

Key Features
Forty SFP56 ports sit beside two QSFP56 and two QSFP-DD ports, so downlinks and high-speed uplinks share one line card slot.
With C9600X-SUP-2 the SFP56 ports run at 50G, 25G and 10G, the QSFP56 ports at 200G, 100G and 40G and the QSFP-DD ports at 400G, 200G, 100G and 40G. With C9600-SUP-1 the SFP ports run at 25G, 10G and 1G, and QSFP-DD operation is not supported.
The card starts at Cisco IOS XE 17.7.1 on both supervisor engines, a later release than the 16.11.1 that older Catalyst 9600 line cards accept with C9600-SUP-1.
With C9600X-SUP-2, adjacent SFP56 ports in a port group must run the same speed, and the speed of port 43 sets the speed of port 44.
The CVR-QSFP-SFP10G adapter lets QSFP ports take 10G transceivers with C9600X-SUP-2, and 10G or 1G transceivers with C9600-SUP-1.
The card requests 420 W of DC output power, draws 466 W of AC input and dissipates 1590 BTU/hr, which the chassis power budget has to cover.
Application Scenarios
In a campus aggregation layer, the card terminates access-facing links on its 40 SFP56 ports and sends traffic upstream on the QSFP56 and QSFP-DD ports from one slot of the Catalyst 9606R.
A campus core on C9600X-SUP-2 uses the two QSFP-DD ports for 400G or 200G links while the SFP56 ports run at 50G, 25G or 10G on the same card.

C9600-LC-40YL4CD is the combo card of this group, with 40 SFP56 ports plus 2 QSFP56 and 2 QSFP-DD ports, while C9600-LC-48YL has 48 SFP56 ports and no QSFP positions and C9600-LC-24C has 24 QSFP28 ports. Links above 100G, up to 200G on the QSFP56 ports and 400G on the QSFP-DD ports, need C9600-LC-40YL4CD on C9600X-SUP-2. Slot bandwidth is set by the supervisor, not the card: 6.4 Tbps (3.2 Tbps full-duplex) per slot with C9600X-SUP-2 and 2.4 Tbps (1.2 Tbps full-duplex) with C9600-SUP-1, the same for C9600-LC-48YL and C9600-LC-24C. A chassis that needs only SFP-family links stays on C9600-LC-48YL, which starts at Cisco IOS XE 16.11.1 with C9600-SUP-1 against 17.7.1 here, and a QSFP28-only design moves to C9600-LC-24C. All three run on C9600X-SUP-2 and C9600-SUP-1; on C9600-SUP-1 this card offers 40 ports of 25G, 10G or 1G plus 2 ports of 100G or 40G.
