C9610R Description
The C9610R is a Cisco C9610 Series Smart Switches 10-slot modular chassis for large campus core and aggregation layers. The chassis has eight line-card slots, two supervisor slots, eight power-supply bays and four fan-tray bays, with up to 6.4 Tbps of bandwidth per line-card slot and 51.2 Tbps of system switching capacity. Catalyst 9600 line cards run in the chassis only through the C9610-LC-ADPT adapter, and the supervisors and line cards all require Cisco IOS XE 17.18.1 or later.

Key Features
Each line-card slot carries up to 6.4 Tbps with either supervisor, which gives the chassis 51.2 Tbps of system switching capacity and up to 15.6 Bpps of forwarding rate.
Supervisors occupy their own slots, so all eight line-card slots stay available for ports. Two supervisors form a 1+1 pair with SSO, NSF and full-image ISSU.
A fully populated chassis reaches 448 SFP56 ports at 10G/25G/50G, 256 QSFP28 ports at 40G/100G or 16 QSFP-DD ports at 400G.
C9610-SUP-3 supports up to 1,000,000 IPv4 routes, while C9610-SUP-3XL raises that to 2,000,000 IPv4 routes and adds 8 GB of HBM2E packet buffer per K100 ASIC.
The bays take 3000W AC, 2000W AC or 2000W DC supplies from the Catalyst 9600 family, and run in Combined, N+1 or N+N mode. Redundant modes need supplies of the same wattage.
Four C9610-FAN trays, each with six independently controlled fans, pull air front to back. The system keeps running if one tray fails and shuts down after 180 seconds with two or more missing.
Application Scenarios
At the center of a large campus network, the chassis terminates distribution-layer links from multiple buildings on 100G and 400G line-card ports. Two supervisors in slots 5 and 6 run in a 1+1 redundant pair with SSO and NSF.
A multi-building campus can use the chassis as an aggregation layer that mixes 40 SFP56 downlinks per C9610-LC-40YL4CD card with QSFP28 and QSFP-DD uplinks in the same platform. Native density reaches 448 SFP56 or 256 QSFP28 ports.
A campus that already owns C9600X-LC-32CD or C9600-LC-40YL4CD cards can move them into the chassis through C9610-LC-ADPT adapters. The adapter converts the C9606R backplane connector and left-to-right airflow to the C9610R front-to-back layout.

C9610R is the 10-slot chassis behind the cards in this table, with eight line-card slots and two supervisor slots, while C9610-LC-32CD and C9610-LC-40YL4CD are native cards that fit slots 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 10 at 6.4 Tbps per slot. C9610-LC-32CD offers 30 x 100G/40G QSFP28 and 2 x 400G QSFP-DD ports for 100G-dense cores, whereas C9610-LC-40YL4CD offers 40 x 50G/25G/10G SFP56 ports with QSFP56 and QSFP-DD uplinks for cores that terminate 25G or 10G links. Installed Catalyst 9600 cards such as C9600X-LC-32CD also run in C9610R, but only through a C9610-LC-ADPT adapter. Supervisors split by scale: C9610-SUP-3 handles up to 1,000,000 IPv4 routes, and designs that need 2,000,000 IPv4 routes or deeper packet buffering move to C9610-SUP-3XL.
Ordering Checklist
- Supervisors: Add C9610-SUP-3 or C9610-SUP-3XL, with a second of the same family in slots 5 and 6 for redundancy. C9610R ships without a supervisor, and 1+1 redundancy needs two of the same family.
- Line cards and adapter: Order native C9610-LC-32CD or C9610-LC-40YL4CD, or add C9610-LC-ADPT for C9600X-LC-32CD, C9600-LC-40YL4CD, C9600X-LC-56YL4C or C9600-LC-48TX. Catalyst 9600 line cards do not fit the C9610R slots without the adapter, and the chassis ships with no line card.
- Power supplies: Order at least four of C9600-PWR-3KWAC, C9600-PWR-2KWAC or C9600-PWR-2KWDC, all of the same wattage in redundant modes. The chassis ships with none, and mixed wattages cannot run N+1 or N+N.
- Fan trays: Order four C9610-FAN trays, which are not part of the C9610R chassis order.
- Power cords: Add a cord for each AC supply, such as CAB-9K20A-NA for C9600-PWR-3KWAC in North America. Each 3000W AC supply needs a country-specific cord, and the chassis does not include them.
- Subscription: Order LIC-CS-CO-MO-A with a 3Y, 5Y or 7Y term. C9610 has only the Advantage tier, with a 36-month minimum for new subscriptions.
