DS-C9710-V2K9 Description
The DS-C9710-V2K9 is a Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director base configuration for enterprise SAN cores, built as a 14-rack-unit chassis with two Supervisor-4 modules, three Fabric-3 modules and four 3000W AC power supplies. The three Fabric-3 modules give each slot 1536 Gbps of front-panel Fibre Channel and 1320 Gbps of FCoE bandwidth, within a platform capacity of up to 24 Tbps. The Supervisor-4 and Fabric-3 modules in this configuration need Cisco MDS NX-OS Release 8.4.1 or later.

Key Features
Front-panel Fibre Channel bandwidth per slot rises in even steps with each Fabric-3 module, from 512 Gbps with one to 3072 Gbps with six. This configuration starts at 1536 Gbps, and three fabric slots stay open for later additions.
A chassis fully populated with four 48-Port 32-Gbps Fibre Channel cards needs three Fabric-3 modules, the number installed here. Those cards can go in without adding fabric hardware.
Four of the eight power supply bays hold 3000W AC supplies. The other four are available as port count and line card load grow, within the platform’s hot-swappable 2N redundant power design.
Power supplies, fan trays, SFP+ optics and switching modules all swap while the director is running. Fan trays carry integrated temperature and power management.
The chassis runs 2/4/8, 4/8/16 and 8/16/32-Gbps autosensing Fibre Channel plus 10-Gbps Fibre Channel. The one exception is 2G, which the 32-Gbps module does not support.
The chassis occupies 14 rack units and weighs 185.5 lb (84.2 kg) with fans. Rack position and floor loading are settled in the site survey, before any modules are added.
Application Scenarios
Host and array connections from across the data center converge on this director, which runs redundant Supervisor-4 modules and a Fabric-3 crossbar behind its line cards.
Eight-gigabit legacy arrays and 32-Gbps current hosts can share one fabric, because the chassis supports 2/4/8, 4/8/16 and 8/16/32-Gbps autosensing line cards side by side.
In a hall that cannot take the SAN offline, the director’s hot-swappable power supplies, fan trays and switching modules are replaced while it carries traffic, within a 0 to 40 degrees C ambient range.

DS-C9710-V2K9 and DS-C9710-V3K9 are the same MDS 9710 chassis with different fabric and power content, three Fabric-3 modules and four 3 kW AC supplies against six and six, which sets front-panel bandwidth at 1536 Gbps per slot against 3072 Gbps. Three Fabric-3 modules already meet Cisco’s minimum for four 48-Port 32-Gbps line cards, so DS-C9710-V3K9 is needed only when 3072 Gbps per slot is a day-one design figure. A fabric built on 48-Port 16-Gbps cards that wants N+1 needs four fabric modules, so it adds one DS-X9710-FAB3 to DS-C9710-V2K9. DS-C9710 is the chassis ordered with no power supplies and with fans included; its supervisors, fabric modules and line cards are specified as separate lines for the actual configuration. Both bundles include Supervisor-4 and Fabric-3 modules that need MDS NX-OS 8.4.1 or later.
Ordering Checklist
- Bundle contents: The PID already includes 2 Supervisor-4 modules, 3 Fabric-3 modules and 4 DS-CAC97-3KW supplies. Adding those parts again on the same order duplicates hardware the bundle already ships.
- Fourth fabric module: Add DS-X9710-FAB3 when 48-Port 16-Gbps line cards need N+1 fabric redundancy. The bundle ships three Fabric-3 modules and 16-Gbps cards need four for N+1.
- Remaining power bays: The four open bays take DS-CAC97-3KW for AC feeds or DS-CDC97-3KW for DC feeds. The bundle fills four of the eight bays with AC supplies only.
- Line cards: Order DS-X9648-1536K9, DS-X9748-3072-TK9, DS-X9748-3072-VK9 or DS-X9334-K9 as separate lines. The bundle includes no line cards, so it has no front-panel ports until modules are added.
