DS-C9250ID16GSFPK9 Description

The DS-C9250ID16GSFPK9 is a Cisco MDS 9250i multiservice fabric switch with 20 16G Fibre Channel SFPs for SAN consolidation and remote storage replication over IP. The fixed 2RU chassis has 20 enabled 16G Fibre Channel ports out of 40, eight 10GbE FCoE ports, two 1/10GbE FCIP and iSCSI ports and front-to-back airflow. The remaining 20 Fibre Channel ports stay inactive until a 20-port upgrade license is installed, and the SFPs arrive loose rather than seated in the port cages.

Key Features

Twenty 16G Optics In The Box

The bundle supplies 20 16G Fibre Channel SFPs, one for each enabled Fibre Channel port. They arrive loose rather than seated in the port cages.

Upgrade From 20 To 40 Ports

Twenty of the 40 Fibre Channel ports are enabled in the base configuration. A 20-port upgrade license enables the rest on the same fixed chassis.

Three Protocols In One 2RU Chassis

Fibre Channel, FCoE and IP storage share the chassis, with eight 10GbE FCoE ports and two 1/10GbE ports for FCIP and iSCSI. The SAN Extension over IP package is included on the two IP ports, which support up to six FCIP tunnels each.

Application Scenarios

Data Center SAN Edge

In a data center SAN, the switch connects hosts and storage arrays to 16G Fibre Channel ports, while the eight FCoE ports take directly attached unified fabric devices.

Replication Between Two Sites

For storage replication between sites, the two 1/10GbE ports carry FCIP tunnels that extend a Fibre Channel fabric across an IP WAN, using the SAN Extension over IP package included with the switch.

iSCSI Hosts Reaching FC Storage

In a server room that mixes Ethernet-attached and Fibre Channel-attached equipment, the IP storage ports let iSCSI hosts reach Fibre Channel storage arrays through the same chassis.

DS-C9250ID16GSFPK9 and DS-C9250ID8GSFPK9 are the same 50-port base configuration (20 Fibre Channel, 8 FCoE and 2 FCIP ports), but DS-C9250ID16GSFPK9 comes with 20 16G FC SFPs where DS-C9250ID8GSFPK9 comes with 20 8G FC SFPs, so 16G fabric links need the 16G bundle. A site that buys its own optics, or orders through the OSM channel, takes DS-C9250I-K9, whose description lists no optics. The base configuration enables 20 of the 40 Fibre Channel ports; the other 20 come from the 20-port upgrade license M9250IP20-16G=, or from M9250IPD20-16GSFP=, which bundles that license with 20 16G SFPs and is an upgrade for an installed switch, not a chassis.

Ordering Checklist

  • Fibre Channel port upgrade: Add M9250IP20-16G=, or M9250IPD20-16GSFP= to add 20 16G SFPs with it, for ports 21 to 40. The base configuration enables 20 Fibre Channel ports, so the other 20 stay inactive without the upgrade.
  • Optics by port type: Use DS-SFP-FC16G-SW or DS-SFP-FC16G-LW in Fibre Channel ports; SFP-10G-SR, SFP-10G-LR or SFP-10G-ER in the 10GbE FCoE ports; DS-SFP-GET in the IP Services ports. Each optic works only in its own port type, and the 20 SFPs in the bundle cover Fibre Channel ports only.
  • Included SFPs: The 20 16G SFPs travel in the box and are not installed in the port cages. Install them before the first links are brought up.
  • Optional software packages: M9200ENT1K9 (Enterprise) and DCNM-SAN-M92-K9 are separate lines; only SAN Extension over IP is included. Enterprise features and DCNM management are not licensed on the base switch.
  • Power cords: Select one CAB-9K10A-xx cord for the destination country, or CAB-9K12A-NA for North America. The cord list is region-specific and the plug must match the site outlet.

Their attention to detail and follow-through impresses our team. Invoice formatting was a bit different from what our AP system expects, but workable.
