The N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE is a Cisco Nexus 2248TP-E Fabric Extender for racks that attach 1G copper servers to a Nexus parent switch. The unit has 48 100/1000BASE-T host ports, four 10G SFP+ fabric ports, 176 Gbps / 131 Mpps of hardware forwarding, a 32 MB shared buffer, and two power supplies with one fan module. The four fabric ports ship empty and accept SFP+ optics, Twinax cables or FET-10G, which must pair with FET-10G at the far end.

Product Performance
Key Features
The 100/1000BASE-T RJ-45 ports negotiate speed automatically, so mixed 100M and 1G devices share the same unit. Forcing a speed on the parent side is not recommended.
Four SFP+ fabric ports give 40 Gbps in each direction (80 Gbps full duplex), a 1.2:1 ratio against the 48 host ports.
The fabric ports take SFP-10G-SR, SFP-10G-LR, passive Twinax up to 5 m, active Twinax to 10 m, or FET-10G in matched pairs. Twinax CX1 suits parents closer than 10 m.
The 2248TP-E chassis shares 32 MB of buffer across its host ports, which helps when several servers send to the fabric at once.
The chassis carries two hot-swappable power supplies and one fan module, in standard or reversed airflow with AC or DC supplies.
Parents can be Nexus 5000, 6000, 7000 or 9000 series switches, with Nexus 9000 limited to server vPC designs and Nexus 7000 M3 modules needing NX-OS 8.1(1).
Application Scenarios
A row of servers, appliances and storage controllers on 1G copper connects through the 48 100/1000BASE-T ports, while switching policy stays on the Nexus parent.
Racks within 10 m of the parent switch can run passive Twinax on the fabric ports, and longer runs use SFP-10G-SR or SFP-10G-LR optics.
In a Nexus 9000 pair running server vPC, the unit serves as the rack-edge copper layer, the only Nexus 9000 design in which this Fabric Extender is supported.

N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE and N2K-C2248TF-E use the same Nexus 2248TP-E chassis, but N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE leaves the four 10G SFP+ fabric ports empty while N2K-C2248TF-E includes eight FET transceivers, so the TF-E suits fabric links that run FET at both ends. N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE ships with two power supplies and one fan module, and airflow and AC or DC power are chosen through N2248TP-E bundle packs. N2K-C2248TP-1GE is the earlier non-E 2248TP chassis, so stay on N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE where the 32 MB shared buffer matters. Hosts that need 1/10GBASE-T instead of 1G copper call for N2K-C2232TM-E-10GE, with 32 host ports, eight 10G fabric ports and 160 Gbps of fabric speed.
Ordering Checklist
- Airflow and power pack: Order N2248TP-E-FA-BUN (standard airflow, 2 AC), N2248TP-E-BA-BUN (reversed, 2 AC), N2248TP-E-FD-BUN (standard, 2 DC) or N2248TP-E-BD-BUN (reversed, 2 DC); each contains N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE, 2 power supplies and 1 fan. Airflow and AC or DC power are chosen through these packs, not on the chassis PID.
- Fabric media: Fill the four fabric ports with 10G SFP+: SFP-10G-SR, SFP-10G-LR, Twinax SFP-H10GB-CU1M, CU3M, CU5M, or FET-10G with FET-10G at both ends. The chassis ships without fabric optics, so an unfilled port leaves the FEX without an uplink.
- Spare form: N2K-C2248TP-E-1GE= is the spare and includes no fans or power supplies. Ordering the spare form for a new rack leaves it without power or cooling.
- Parent switch: Use a Nexus 5000, 6000, 7000 or 9000 series parent; Nexus 9000 supports this FEX only in server vPC designs. The FEX cannot run as a standalone switch.
