The N3K-C36180YC-R is a Cisco Nexus 36180YC-R data center switch from the Nexus 3600 Series, built as a 1RU fixed switch for aggregation, IP storage, DMZ and edge routing. The switch has 48 SFP ports at 1, 10 or 25 Gbps and 6 QSFP28 ports at 40 or 100 Gbps, with 1.8 Tbps of switching capacity, up to 1.67 bpps of forwarding and an 8 GB buffer. MACsec runs at wire rate on all 6 QSFP28 ports.

Product Performance
Key Features
Forty-eight SFP ports run natively at 1, 10 or 25 Gbps, and six QSFP28 ports run at 40 or 100 Gbps. One 1RU chassis covers both the server edge and the uplinks.
All six QSFP28 ports encrypt at wire rate. Encrypted 40G or 100G transport therefore needs no separate encryption device.
Each QSFP28 port can split into 4 x 25G or 4 x 10G lanes. A port facing lower-speed gear then connects to four separate links.
The 8 GB buffer is paired with 256,000 LPM routes, 750,000 MAC addresses and 750,000 IP host entries. Those figures suit aggregation and edge-routing roles.
The 1100W supplies and two fan modules are hot-swappable, and a fan module must be swapped within 1 minute. One supply is enough to run the switch, with the second for redundancy.
Full OSPF, EIGRP and BGP are enabled by the N3K-LAN1K9 license. The Nexus 3600 Series follows the Nexus 9000 licensing scheme.
Application Scenarios
A data center aggregation layer can terminate 1G, 10G and 25G endpoints on the SFP ports and send traffic upstream over the QSFP28 ports at 40G or 100G.
Storage-facing racks use the switch as the access layer for 10G and 25G arrays and hosts, relying on its 8 GB buffer to absorb bursty east-west traffic.
At the edge of a data center, the switch carries Layer 3 routing with the Enhanced Layer 3 license, and MACsec on the QSFP28 uplinks encrypts links to neighboring sites or devices.

N3K-C36180YC-R has 48 SFP ports for 1G, 10G or 25G plus 6 QSFP28 ports at 1.8 Tbps and 8 GB of buffer, while N3K-C3636C-R has 36 QSFP28 ports at 7.2 Tbps and 16 GB of buffer. Racks full of 10G or 25G servers with a few 40G or 100G uplinks fit N3K-C36180YC-R; fabrics that need 36 ports of native 40G or 100G, or 4 x 10G and 4 x 25G breakout on every port, move to N3K-C3636C-R. If the project is limited to 1G and 10G SFP+ at 480 Gbps, N3K-C3524P-XL is the smaller option, with 24 enabled ports that can be expanded to 48. Enhanced Layer 3 on N3K-C36180YC-R is the N3K-LAN1K9 license.
Ordering Checklist
- Airflow direction: Order NXA-FAN-65CFM-PE with NXA-PAC-1100W-PE2 or NXA-PHV-1100W-PE for port-side exhaust, or NXA-FAN-65CFM-PI with NXA-PAC-1100W-PI2 or NXA-PHV-1100W-PI for port-side intake. Exhaust and intake are separate fan and power supply PIDs, and the chassis row does not say which are included.
- Power supply type: Choose AC (NXA-PAC-1100W-PE2 or -PI2) or Platinum HV-AC-DC (NXA-PHV-1100W-PE or -PI) on both positions. High-voltage and normal supplies cannot be mixed, and the ordering table lists no DC-only PID.
- Layer 3 license: Add N3K-LAN1K9 if full OSPF, EIGRP and BGP routing is needed. The Nexus 3600 platform uses the Nexus 9000 licensing scheme, so routing is not part of the base chassis.
