The DS-C9220I-12PIK9 is a Cisco MDS 9220i multiservice fabric switch for Fibre Channel SANs and FCIP storage links in racks that pull air in through the port side. The 1RU switch has 12 32G Fibre Channel ports, six IPS ports with 1/10/25/40 Gbps options, 384 Gbps of Fibre Channel forwarding capacity and two 500W AC power supplies. Fans and power supplies must also be port-side intake, and 25G IPS operation is not supported in Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 8.5(1).

Key Features
All 12 Fibre Channel ports and six IPS ports are enabled when the switch is installed, so no port-upgrade license enters the plan.
Air flows front to back, entering at the port side. Fan and power supply modules of the exhaust type raise an alarm and force a shutdown, so every module must be the intake type.
The 12 ports run 4, 8, 16 or 32 Gbps and add up to 384 Gbps of forwarding capacity. Up to 12 physical links bundle into one PortChannel.
The IPS ports cover 1, 10, 25 and 40 Gbps, with up to three FCIP tunnels per 1/10G port and four on the 40G port. NX-OS 8.5(1) does not support the 25G speed.
The SAN Extension over IP package is included, so FCIP and compression work on the IPS ports without a separate software line.
The switch holds two 500W AC supplies and four fan modules, all replaceable while running. Maximum system power is 280W and heat output is 897 BTU/hr.
Application Scenarios
A production data center copies storage to a recovery site over FCIP, using the six IPS ports and the 40G port for up to four tunnels.
In racks that draw air in through the port side, the switch connects servers and arrays to the SAN over 12 line-rate 32G Fibre Channel ports.
A branch office or department consolidates its storage traffic on one 1RU switch and trunks to the main fabric over PortChannels of up to 12 links.

DS-C9220I-12PIK9 is the advanced port-side intake order of the MDS 9220i, with 12 Fibre Channel ports and 6 IPS ports enabled at 1/10/25/40 Gbps, while DS-C9220I-4PIK9 is the same intake chassis enabled for 4 Fibre Channel ports and 2 IPS ports at 1 Gbps. A SAN that needs every port from day one orders DS-C9220I-12PIK9; DS-C9220I-4PIK9 suits a smaller start and reaches the full port set later with the M9220I-UPGK9 license. Racks that exhaust air through the port side need DS-C9220I-12PEK9 for the advanced scope or DS-C9220I-4PEK9 for the base scope, because fans and power supplies must match the chassis airflow. All four orders require Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 8.5(1) or later, and 25G IPS operation is not supported in that release.
Ordering Checklist
- Airflow-matched spares: Order fan DS-C32S-FAN-I= and power supply DS-CAC-500W-I= for port-side intake; DS-CAC-1200W= is bidirectional but supplied only as a spare. Opposite-airflow fans shut the switch down in 10 to 15 seconds and opposite-airflow power supplies in about 10 minutes.
- Power cords: Order a country-specific cord such as CAB-9K10A-UK or CAB-9K12A-NA separately for the C16 inlet on each power supply. Cords are separate lines, and the wrong regional cord leaves a supply unpowered.
- Upgrade license: Leave M9220I-UPGK9 off the order, since 12 FC and 6 IPS ports are already enabled. The license is for base 4P switches, and adding it here pays for ports that are already active.
- Optional software: SAN Extension over IP is included; M9200ENT1K9 (Enterprise Package) and DCNM-SAN-M92-K9 or DCNM-S-M92XK9 are separate lines. Adding an included package duplicates it, and leaving out an optional one means it is absent at delivery.
- Optics: Add 32G Fibre Channel optics such as DS-SFP-FC32G-SW or DS-SFP-FC32G-LW, and IPS optics such as SFP-10G-SR or QSFP-40G-SR4. The switch ships without transceivers, and only Cisco-branded modules are supported.
