The DS-C9220I-4PEK9 is a Cisco MDS 9220i multiservice fabric switch for branch and departmental SANs that start small and extend storage over IP, built with port-side exhaust airflow. The 1RU switch enables four 32G Fibre Channel ports and two IPS ports at 1 Gbps, and includes the SAN Extension over IP package. The M9220I-UPGK9 license is required to enable all 12 Fibre Channel ports and six IPS ports.

Product Performance
Key Features
The base configuration enables four 32G Fibre Channel ports and two IPS ports at 1 Gbps. The other ports on the chassis stay disabled until the upgrade license is applied.
The M9220I-UPGK9 license enables all 12 Fibre Channel ports and six IPS ports at 1/10/25/40 Gbps. The hardware is the same chassis as the advanced configuration.
Fan and power supply modules must match the exhaust direction of the chassis. All fan modules in the switch must be of the same airflow type.
The two enabled IPS ports run at 1 Gbps, which carries FCIP between small sites. Each 1/10G port supports up to three FCIP tunnels.
Each Fibre Channel port runs 4, 8, 16 or 32 Gbps, with extended buffer-to-buffer credits up to 8191 for longer links.
One power supply keeps the switch running, and a second 500W supply adds redundancy. Four hot-swappable fan modules also provide redundancy when all four are installed.
Application Scenarios
A branch office connects a few servers and one storage array to the SAN through four 32G Fibre Channel ports on a single 1RU switch.
A department replicates data to headquarters over FCIP on the two 1 Gbps IPS ports, using the included SAN Extension over IP package.
A data center row with port-side exhaust cooling starts with four active ports and enables the remaining Fibre Channel and IPS ports later with the upgrade license.

DS-C9220I-4PEK9 is the base port-side exhaust order of the MDS 9220i, with 4 Fibre Channel ports and 2 IPS ports at 1 Gbps enabled, while DS-C9220I-12PEK9 is the same exhaust chassis with 12 Fibre Channel ports and 6 IPS ports enabled at 1/10/25/40 Gbps. A SAN that starts small orders DS-C9220I-4PEK9 and adds M9220I-UPGK9 later to enable all ports; one that needs the full set at purchase orders DS-C9220I-12PEK9 instead. Racks that draw air in through the port side need DS-C9220I-4PIK9 for the base scope or DS-C9220I-12PIK9 for the advanced scope, because fans and power supplies must match the chassis airflow. All four orders require Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 8.5(1) or later, and 25G IPS operation is not supported in that release.
Ordering Checklist
- Switch or spare: Order DS-C9220I-4PEK9 for a new switch; DS-C9220I-4PEK9= is the spare line. The spare PID is a separate line item from the switch itself.
- Airflow-matched spares: Order fan DS-C32S-FAN-E= and power supply DS-CAC-500W-E= for port-side exhaust; DS-CAC-1200W= is bidirectional but supplied only as a spare. Opposite-airflow fans shut the switch down in 10 to 15 seconds and opposite-airflow power supplies in about 10 minutes.
- Port activation: Add M9220I-UPGK9 only if all 12 FC and 6 IPS ports are needed. The base order enables 4 FC and 2 IPS ports at 1 Gbps, and the other ports stay unusable without the license.
- Power cords: Order a country-specific cord such as CAB-9K10A-UK or CAB-9K12A-NA separately for the C16 inlet on each power supply. Cords are separate lines, and the wrong regional cord leaves a supply unpowered.
- Optional software: SAN Extension over IP is included; M9200ENT1K9 (Enterprise Package) and DCNM-SAN-M92-K9 or DCNM-S-M92XK9 are separate lines. Adding an included package duplicates it, and leaving out an optional one means it is absent at delivery.
- Optics: Add 32G Fibre Channel optics such as DS-SFP-FC32G-SW or DS-SFP-FC32G-LW, and IPS optics such as SFP-10G-SR or QSFP-40G-SR4. The switch ships without transceivers, and only Cisco-branded modules are supported.
