The DS-C9220I-4PIK9 is a Cisco MDS 9220i multiservice fabric switch for compact SAN deployments with port-side intake airflow that need a low starting port count and FCIP on the same box. The 1RU switch enables four 32G Fibre Channel ports and two IPS ports at 1 Gbps, and includes the SAN Extension over IP package. The M9220I-UPGK9 license is required to enable all 12 Fibre Channel ports and six IPS ports.

Key Features
Four Fibre Channel ports and two 1 Gbps IPS ports are active at delivery, which covers a small fabric without paying for unused ports.
The M9220I-UPGK9 license raises the switch to 12 Fibre Channel ports and six IPS ports with 1/10/25/40 Gbps options. No hardware swap is involved.
Air enters at the port side, and fans and power supplies must be the intake type. All fan modules in the switch must share one airflow type.
The SAN Extension over IP package is part of the switch, so FCIP and compression are available on the IPS ports from the first day.
The Fibre Channel ports negotiate 4, 8, 16 or 32 Gbps and bundle up to 12 physical links into one PortChannel.
The switch runs on one 500W AC supply and gains redundancy with a second. Maximum system power is 280W.
Application Scenarios
A small site attaches a handful of hosts and a storage array to a Fibre Channel fabric using the four enabled 32G ports.
A remote office sends backup traffic to a central data center over FCIP on the two 1 Gbps IPS ports, with no separate SAN extension appliance.
In a rack that draws air in through the port side, the switch begins with four active ports and enables all 12 Fibre Channel and six IPS ports when storage demand grows.

DS-C9220I-4PIK9 is the base port-side intake order of the MDS 9220i, with 4 Fibre Channel ports and 2 IPS ports at 1 Gbps enabled, while DS-C9220I-12PIK9 is the same intake chassis with 12 Fibre Channel ports and 6 IPS ports enabled at 1/10/25/40 Gbps. A SAN that starts small orders DS-C9220I-4PIK9 and adds M9220I-UPGK9 later to enable all ports; one that needs the full set at purchase orders DS-C9220I-12PIK9 instead. Racks that exhaust air through the port side need DS-C9220I-4PEK9 for the base scope or DS-C9220I-12PEK9 for the advanced scope, because fans and power supplies must match the chassis airflow. All four orders require Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 8.5(1) or later, and 25G IPS operation is not supported in that release.
Ordering Checklist
- Switch or spare: Order DS-C9220I-4PIK9 for a new switch; DS-C9220I-4PIK9= is the spare line. The spare PID is a separate line item from the switch itself.
- Airflow-matched spares: Order fan DS-C32S-FAN-I= and power supply DS-CAC-500W-I= for port-side intake; DS-CAC-1200W= is bidirectional but supplied only as a spare. Opposite-airflow fans shut the switch down in 10 to 15 seconds and opposite-airflow power supplies in about 10 minutes.
- Port activation: Add M9220I-UPGK9 only if all 12 FC and 6 IPS ports are needed. The base order enables 4 FC and 2 IPS ports at 1 Gbps, and the other ports stay unusable without the license.
- Power cords: Order a country-specific cord such as CAB-9K10A-UK or CAB-9K12A-NA separately for the C16 inlet on each power supply. Cords are separate lines, and the wrong regional cord leaves a supply unpowered.
- Optional software: SAN Extension over IP is included; M9200ENT1K9 (Enterprise Package) and DCNM-SAN-M92-K9 or DCNM-S-M92XK9 are separate lines. Adding an included package duplicates it, and leaving out an optional one means it is absent at delivery.
- Optics: Add 32G Fibre Channel optics such as DS-SFP-FC32G-SW or DS-SFP-FC32G-LW, and IPS optics such as SFP-10G-SR or QSFP-40G-SR4. The switch ships without transceivers, and only Cisco-branded modules are supported.
