The DS-C9220I-12PEK9 is a Cisco MDS 9220i multiservice fabric switch for Fibre Channel SANs and FCIP links between data centers, built with port-side exhaust airflow. The 1RU switch has 12 32G Fibre Channel ports, six IPS ports with 1/10/25/40 Gbps options, 384 Gbps of Fibre Channel forwarding capacity and two 500W AC power supplies. All ports are enabled at delivery, and 25G IPS operation is not supported in Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 8.5(1).

Key Features
The switch ships with 12 Fibre Channel ports and six IPS ports active. No port-upgrade license is needed to reach the full 12 and six.
Fans and power supplies must blow in the same direction as the chassis. A mismatch triggers an alarm, and the switch shuts down after about 10 to 15 seconds with the wrong fans or about 10 minutes with the wrong power supplies.
Each of the 12 ports autosenses 4, 8, 16 or 32 Gbps and forwards at line rate. Extended buffer-to-buffer credits reach 8191, which suits long-distance links.
The six IPS ports are three 1/10G ports, one 1/10/25G port, one 25G port and one 40G port. The 25G speed and port 5 are not supported in NX-OS 8.5(1), so those ports need a later release.
The SAN Extension over IP package comes with the switch and carries FCIP with compression on the IPS ports. The Enterprise package and DCNM licenses are separate options.
Two hot-swappable 500W supplies run in a 1+1 pair, and four hot-swappable fan modules cool the chassis. The switch tops out at 280W.
Application Scenarios
Two data centers replicate storage arrays over FCIP tunnels that run on the six IPS ports, with up to four tunnels on the 40G port and three on each 1/10G port.
In a rack row cooled for port-side exhaust, the switch joins hosts and storage arrays to the fabric through 12 line-rate 32G Fibre Channel ports.
A remote site or large department builds its SAN around one 1RU switch, linking back to the main fabric over PortChannels of up to 12 physical links.

DS-C9220I-12PEK9 is the advanced port-side exhaust order of the MDS 9220i, with 12 Fibre Channel ports and 6 IPS ports enabled at 1/10/25/40 Gbps, while DS-C9220I-4PEK9 is the same exhaust chassis enabled for 4 Fibre Channel ports and 2 IPS ports at 1 Gbps. A SAN that needs every port from day one orders DS-C9220I-12PEK9; DS-C9220I-4PEK9 suits a smaller start and reaches the full port set later with the M9220I-UPGK9 license. Racks that draw air in through the port side need DS-C9220I-12PIK9 for the advanced scope or DS-C9220I-4PIK9 for the base scope, because fans and power supplies must match the chassis airflow. All four orders require Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 8.5(1) or later, and 25G IPS operation is not supported in that release.
Ordering Checklist
- Airflow-matched spares: Order fan DS-C32S-FAN-E= and power supply DS-CAC-500W-E= for port-side exhaust; DS-CAC-1200W= is bidirectional but supplied only as a spare. Opposite-airflow fans shut the switch down in 10 to 15 seconds and opposite-airflow power supplies in about 10 minutes.
- Power cords: Order a country-specific cord such as CAB-9K10A-UK or CAB-9K12A-NA separately for the C16 inlet on each power supply. Cords are separate lines, and the wrong regional cord leaves a supply unpowered.
- Upgrade license: Leave M9220I-UPGK9 off the order, since 12 FC and 6 IPS ports are already enabled. The license is for base 4P switches, and adding it here pays for ports that are already active.
- Optional software: SAN Extension over IP is included; M9200ENT1K9 (Enterprise Package) and DCNM-SAN-M92-K9 or DCNM-S-M92XK9 are separate lines. Adding an included package duplicates it, and leaving out an optional one means it is absent at delivery.
- Optics: Add 32G Fibre Channel optics such as DS-SFP-FC32G-SW or DS-SFP-FC32G-LW, and IPS optics such as SFP-10G-SR or QSFP-40G-SR4. The switch ships without transceivers, and only Cisco-branded modules are supported.
