The N2K-C2248TF-E is a Cisco Nexus 2248TP-E Fabric Extender for server racks that connect 1G copper hosts to a Nexus parent switch. The unit has 48 100/1000BASE-T host ports, four 10G SFP+ fabric ports with eight FET-10G transceivers included, 176 Gbps / 131 Mpps of hardware forwarding and port-side exhaust or intake airflow. The included FET-10G transceivers link only to FET-10G at the far end, and the parent must be a Nexus 5000, 6000, 7000 or 9000 series switch.

Product Performance
Key Features
Eight FET-10G transceivers come with the unit, enough to fill the four fabric ports and keep four spare. Each draws about 1W and reaches 25 m on OM2 or 100 m on OM3, and each must meet another FET-10G at the parent end.
Forty-eight 1G host ports share 40 Gbps of fabric speed in each direction, a 1.2:1 ratio, so a fully loaded rack stays close to line rate toward the parent.
The 2248TP-E chassis carries a 32 MB shared buffer across its host ports, which absorbs short bursts from servers that transmit at the same moment.
Airflow is port-side exhaust or port-side intake, and the two power supplies are 400W AC, 400W DC or 350W DC types that match the airflow direction. One fan module is included.
Supported parents run NX-OS 5.1(3)N1(1) or later on Nexus 5000, 6.0 on Nexus 6000, 6.1(1) on Nexus 7000 and 6.1 on Nexus 9000, where only server vPC designs are supported.
The 1RU chassis operates from 0 to 40 degrees C, and the 2248TP-E hardware revision 3 meets NEBS Level 3, which suits telecom and carrier-neutral facilities.
Application Scenarios
In a data center row where servers, storage controllers and management ports still use 1G copper, the 48 100/1000BASE-T ports bring those hosts onto the parent switch through four 10G fabric links.
When the parent switch sits in the same pod, the eight included FET-10G transceivers carry the fabric links over multimode fiber, up to 100 m on OM3, without separate optics.
A Nexus 7000 with an F3 module such as N7K-F312FQ-25 can host this Fabric Extender from NX-OS 6.2(12), keeping rack-edge access ports under the parent’s management.

N2K-C2248TF-E and N2K-C2248TP-E share the same Nexus 2248TP-E chassis with 48 100/1000BASE-T host ports and four 10G SFP+ fabric ports, but N2K-C2248TF-E includes eight Fabric Extender Transceivers while N2K-C2248TP-E leaves every fabric link to separately bought SFP+ optics, Twinax or FET-10G. FET-10G only links to another FET at the far end, so a design that uplinks with SFP-10G-SR, SFP-10G-LR or Twinax gains nothing from the bundle and fits N2K-C2248TP-E. Servers that need 1/10GBASE-T host ports instead of 1G copper call for N2K-C2232TF-E, which has 32 host ports, eight 10G fabric ports, 16 FET and 160 Gbps of fabric speed.
Ordering Checklist
- Airflow direction: Choose standard airflow (port-side exhaust) with fan N2K-C2248-FAN, or reversed airflow (port-side intake) with fan N2K-C2248-FAN-B. The fan and both power supplies must face the same direction as the rack.
- Power supply type: Choose AC with N2200-PAC-400W or N2200-PAC-400W-B, or DC with N2200-PDC-400W or N2200-PDC-350W-B. The chassis comes with two power supplies, and their type and airflow are chosen on the order.
- Fabric links: Use SFP-10G-SR, SFP-10G-LR or Twinax SFP-H10GB-CU1M, CU3M, CU5M; the eight FET-10G in the bundle only pair with FET-10G on the other end. An FET cannot link to a standard SFP+ optic, so a mixed pair leaves the fabric port down.
- Parent switch: Use a Nexus 5000, 6000, 7000 or 9000 series parent; Nexus 9000 supports this FEX only in server vPC designs. The FEX cannot run as a standalone switch.
