C9400X-SUP-2 Description
The C9400X-SUP-2 is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series Supervisor 2 Module, the access-layer member of the current supervisor generation and the engine that unlocks 100G uplinks on a C9404R, C9407R or C9410R chassis. Built on the Cisco Unified Access Data Plane 3.0sec ASIC, it delivers a flat 240 Gbps per line-card slot on all three chassis rather than the sliding figure the previous generation produces, backs it with up to 9.6 Tbps of centralized wired capacity and a 3 Bpps forwarding rate for IPv4 and IPv6, and presents up to 4 non-blocking 100/40 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks alongside up to 4 non-blocking 25/10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. Because Catalyst 9400 line cards are functionally transparent and leave all packet processing, queuing, buffering and QoS to the supervisor, installing this engine is what raises an existing chassis to 14 supported line cards, adding C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48XS, C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC and C9400-LC-48TX to the nine the previous generation carries. It occupies one dedicated supervisor slot, supports 1+1 redundancy with NSF/SSO and sub-200 msec ISSU when paired through the C9400X-SUP-2/2 redundant PID, holds 16 GB DRAM, 20 GB flash and up to 960 GB of SSD for container-based application hosting, and requires Cisco IOS XE 17.7.1 on every chassis.

Application Scenarios

- C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL are the same silicon with the same capacity, forwarding rate, memory, buffer and line card support; the single hardware difference is 240 Gbps against 480 Gbps per line-card slot, so the decision is whether any slot will actually saturate 240 Gbps rather than a feature question.
- Against C9400-SUP-1XL the gap is generational rather than incremental: capacity rises from 1.44 Tbps to 9.6 Tbps, forwarding from 900 Mpps to 3 Bpps, MAC scale from 64,000 to 128,000 and IPv4 routes from 144,000 to 256,000, and only C9400X-SUP-2 accepts the five newer line cards.
- Chassis size changes the comparison with the older engine. C9400-SUP-1XL matches C9400X-SUP-2 at 240 Gbps per slot in a C9404R but falls to 120 Gbps in a C9407R and 80 Gbps in a C9410R, so the larger the chassis, the wider the real throughput gap.
- For deciding which SKU to order, check whether the design needs any of the five Supervisor 2 class line cards first, since that alone rules out C9400-SUP-1XL, then size the busiest slot to settle 240 against 480 Gbps, and treat MTBF and weight as non-differentiators within the current generation.
Selection Guide
1. Where 240 Gbps Per Slot Is Genuinely Enough
C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL differ in nothing but per-slot rate, so a chassis whose busiest line card is a 48-port 1G or copper UPOE+ card never approaches 240 Gbps and gains nothing from the 480 Gbps engine; a slot holding C9400-LC-48XS or C9400-LC-12QC runs 2:1 oversubscribed here and does justify the step up.
2. The Engine That Adds Five Line Cards
Moving from C9400-SUP-1XL to this engine is what makes C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48XS, C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC and C9400-LC-48TX orderable at all; a design that needs 25G, 100G or 10G multigigabit cards is buying the engine to reach the card, not for the throughput headline.
3. Chassis Size Decides Whether The Older Engine Competes
In a C9404R the previous C9400-SUP-1XL already delivers the same 240 Gbps per slot this engine provides, so the case there rests on table scale and card support; in a C9410R the older engine drops to 80 Gbps and the throughput argument becomes decisive on its own.
4. The Second Engine Has Its Own PID
A redundant pair is ordered as C9400X-SUP-2 plus C9400X-SUP-2/2 rather than two identical line items, and the 17.7.1 software floor applies to both; an order that lists the base PID twice does not describe a supported redundant configuration.
5. Custom Templates Replace Flexible ASIC Templates
Flexible ASIC templates are currently not supported in software on C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL, which use Custom ASIC templates instead; a design carrying over an Access, Core, SD-Access or NAT template plan from a C9400-SUP-1XL build has to be re-expressed for the newer engine.
