C9404R Description
The C9404R is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series 4 slot chassis, the smallest modular member of the family and the platform buyers reach for when a modular access or collapsed-core switch has to fit a shallow, shared cabinet. Four physical slots are split into two dedicated supervisor engine slots and two line-card slots, giving 1+1 supervisor redundancy with NSF/SSO and sub-200 msec ISSU upgrades while still leaving room for up to 96 access ports of 1G copper, 1G fiber, 10G fiber or multigigabit. Bandwidth per line-card slot tracks the installed supervisor engine and reaches 480 Gbps with C9400X-SUP-2XL, 240 Gbps with C9400X-SUP-2, C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y, and 80 Gbps with C9400-SUP-1; because Catalyst 9400 line cards are functionally transparent and let all packet processing, queuing and QoS run on the supervisor, the same cards carry forward across supervisor generations. Four power supply bays accept the 3200W AC, 2100W AC and 3200W DC modules in redundant N+N, redundant N+1 or combined mode, integrated PoE reaches 4320W per line-card slot with current shipping line cards, and the chassis occupies 6 RU at 39.0 lb (17.2 kg) with its C9404-FAN dual serviceable fan tray installed.

Product Performance
Key Features
Only slots 1 and 4 take line cards, so the port count is capped at 96 access ports regardless of which supervisor is fitted; sizing a closet above that number moves the design to a larger chassis rather than a bigger supervisor.
C9400-SUP-1XL and C9400-SUP-1XL-Y deliver 240 Gbps per line-card slot in this chassis, the same figure C9400X-SUP-2 produces, so a 240 Gbps design can be built on the older supervisor class without the oversubscription penalty that appears in the taller chassis.
Four power supply bays feed only two line cards, which leaves room to run N+N redundancy on two supplies while keeping two bays free, or to reach combined mode headroom for a fully loaded UPOE+ line card without contending with additional cards.
Slots 2 and 3 accept supervisor engines only and line cards are not supported there, so a single-supervisor build leaves one slot idle rather than converting it to extra port capacity.
The chassis occupies 6 RU at 10.47 x 17.30 x 16.30 in. and mounts to a 19-in rack from the front with rack and cable guide hardware included, so it drops into shallow cabinets that cannot take the 10 RU or 13 RU members of the family.
The chassis runs from Cisco IOS XE 16.9.1 with the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class but requires Cisco IOS XE 17.7.1 once C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL is installed, which sets the minimum image for any estate mixing supervisor generations on a common software train.
Application Scenarios
Installed as a collapsed core in single-building or small multi-tenant campuses, terminating up to 96 fiber or copper distribution links on two line cards while a redundant supervisor pair carries the routing.
Racked in 6 RU wiring cabinets and shared communications rooms where depth and height are constrained, including sites that also house non-network equipment in the same enclosure.
Deployed at large branch or remote-site aggregation points that require dual supervisor engines and multiple power feeds, operating across a -5 to +45 degrees C ambient range up to 6,000 feet.

- The supervisor class a site already owns decides more than slot count here: C9404R is the only chassis in the group where C9400-SUP-1XL still yields 240 Gbps per line-card slot, while the same supervisor drops to 120 Gbps in C9407R and 80 Gbps in C9410R, so an estate standardised on the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class buys full-rate slots on the small chassis and buys oversubscription on the large ones.
- Access-port headroom is the reason to step up rather than a bonus: 96 ports on C9404R against 240 on C9407R and 384 on C9410R means a closet that will cross roughly one hundred endpoints is paying twice if it starts here, since the line cards move but the chassis, fan tray and rack kit do not.
- Chassis-specific accessories block sideways moves. Fan trays are C9404-FAN=, C9407-FAN= and C9410-FAN= respectively, and Cisco lists shelf install kits only for the 7 slot and 10 slot models, so a C9404R going into a rack without full rail support has no shelf kit line item available to it.
- For deciding which SKU to order, count the access ports the site must terminate first, then check the rack budget at 6, 10 or 13 RU, and settle the supervisor last, because the maximum 480 Gbps per slot with C9400X-SUP-2XL and the 4320W PoE per slot figure are identical across all three chassis and do not separate them.
Selection Guide
1. Two Slots Against An Idle Supervisor Bay
A single-supervisor build on C9404R commits half the chassis to a slot that cannot take a line card, so a design that will never add a standby supervisor gives up 50 percent of its slot budget; where port growth matters more than switchover time, C9407R returns five line-card slots for the same two supervisor slots.
2. Full-Rate Slots On The Older Supervisor Class
Sites already holding C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y hardware reach 240 Gbps per line-card slot only in this chassis; putting the same supervisor into C9407R halves that to 120 Gbps and into C9410R cuts it to 80 Gbps, which turns a supervisor reuse plan into a supervisor refresh plan on the larger chassis.
3. The 25G And Above Ceiling Needs Supervisor 2
The 48x 25G SFP28, 24x 40G QSFP+ and 8x 100G QSFP28 densities are unavailable with the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class, and the C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC, C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48TX and C9400-LC-48XS line cards each require C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL, so any uplink plan above 10G carries a supervisor decision with it.
4. Where The Software Train Sets The Supervisor
An estate held on a Cisco IOS XE 16.9.1 baseline can run C9404R with the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class today, but moving to C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL lifts the floor to Cisco IOS XE 17.7.1 for this chassis; a site unable to qualify that train stays on the older supervisor and accepts its 240 Gbps per-slot ceiling.
5. Line Cards Outlive The Supervisor Choice
Because packet processing, queuing and QoS run entirely on the supervisor engine, line cards purchased for a C9400-SUP-1XL build inherit the capabilities of a later C9400X-SUP-2XL without replacement, which makes the supervisor rather than the line card inventory the natural upgrade unit on this chassis.

Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Supervisor slot population |
Confirm supervisor engines are planned for slots 2 or 3 and line cards for slots 1 and 4. |
Line cards are not supported in the supervisor slots, so a four-line-card bill of materials cannot be seated in this chassis. |
|
Line card supervisor dependency |
Confirm the selected line cards are supported by the chosen supervisor engine. |
C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC, C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48TX and C9400-LC-48XS require C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL and will not operate with the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class. |
|
Software image floor |
Confirm the target Cisco IOS XE train meets 16.9.1 for the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class or 17.7.1 for C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL. |
A chassis staged on an image below the supervisor floor will not bring the supervisor into service. |
|
Power supply line items |
Confirm the number, wattage and input type of C9400-PWR-3200ACT, C9400-PWR-3200AC, C9400-PWR-2100AC or C9400-PWR-3200DC units against the chosen redundancy mode. |
Power supplies are separate order lines from the chassis PID, and the 115VAC derating changes how many units a PoE load needs. |
|
Chassis-specific fan tray |
Confirm the fan tray line item reads C9404-FAN=. |
C9407-FAN= and C9410-FAN= are built for the taller chassis and do not fit the 4 slot model. |
|
Rack and accessory kits |
Confirm C9404-ACC-KIT= and C9404-RACK-19-KIT= are on the order for a new install. |
These kits are chassis-specific and no shelf install kit is listed for the 4 slot chassis, so rail support has to come from the rack itself. |
|
Blank covers for empty bays |
Confirm C9400-S-BLANK= and C9400-PWR-BLANK= quantities match the unpopulated slot and power bay count. |
Open bays disturb the chassis airflow path that the dual serviceable fan tray depends on. |
|
Supervisor SSD option |
Confirm whether C9400-SSD-240GB, C9400-SSD-480GB or C9400-SSD-960GB is required for application hosting. |
The SSD is a supervisor line item rather than a chassis feature and cannot be added from the chassis PID. |
