C9400-LC-24XY Description
The C9400-LC-24XY is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series 20-Port 25G (SFP28) and 4-Port 10G (SFP+) line card, a single-slot module that brings 25 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation into a C9404R, C9407R or C9410R chassis. SFP28 and SFP+ modules run together on the card without any restrictions, so a rack part way through a 10G to 25G migration can terminate both speeds in the same slot rather than splitting them across two cards. Cisco positions it for high-performance, high-density 25 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation in the campus and as a core switch in small to medium-sized networks, and for enterprise backbone and collapsed access deployments. The card is a Supervisor 2 class module: it requires C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL and cannot run on C9400-SUP-1, C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y. Bandwidth per slot is 480 Gbps at 1.125:1 oversubscription with C9400X-SUP-2XL and 240 Gbps at 2.25:1 with C9400X-SUP-2 on all three chassis, which are the only two ratios in the line card family that are not whole numbers. Maximum rated power is 200 W, MACsec-256 runs in hardware, jumbo frames reach 9216 bytes, and the card has shipped since Cisco IOS XE 17.12.1.

Application Scenarios
Installed where access or distribution switches hand off at 25G over SFP28 fiber and those links converge on a modular core chassis.
Deployed in enterprise backbone rooms carrying inter-building or inter-floor trunks that have outgrown 10G but do not warrant 40G or 100G optics.
Racked where part of the fiber plant still terminates at 10G on SFP+ while newer runs use SFP28, with both optic families populated on the same card.

- All three cards demand a Supervisor 2 class engine and all three land within 50 W of each other, so the decision is purely which optic family the far end speaks: SFP28 here, QSFP28 and QSFP+ on C9400-LC-12QC, and SFP+ or SFP on C9400-LC-48XS.
- C9400-LC-24XY carries the only fractional oversubscription ratios in the group, at 1.125:1 with C9400X-SUP-2XL and 2.25:1 with C9400X-SUP-2, against clean 1:1 and 2:1 on the other two; the extra contention comes from the 4 additional 10G ports riding alongside the 20 SFP28 ports on one slot.
- Port economics diverge sharply at the chassis level. A fully loaded C9410R reaches 160 ports at 25G here, 96 at 40G or 32 at 100G on C9400-LC-12QC, and 384 at 10G on C9400-LC-48XS, so aggregate bandwidth and port count pull in opposite directions across the three.
- For deciding which SKU to order, match the optic family first because SFP28, QSFP and SFP+ do not interchange, then size the port count against the chassis, and treat the software floor as a secondary check since only C9400-LC-48XS runs below Cisco IOS XE 17.12.1.
Selection Guide
1. Twenty-Five Gigabit Without Moving To QSFP
C9400-LC-24XY terminates 25G on SFP28, which keeps the same LC connector family and cabling practice as an existing 10G plant; reaching higher aggregate bandwidth through C9400-LC-12QC means changing to QSFP28 and QSFP+ optics and re-planning the fiber terminations.
2. Fractional Contention From The Four Extra Ports
The 4 ports of 10GE SFP+ riding beside the 20 SFP28 ports push oversubscription to 1.125:1 even on C9400X-SUP-2XL and to 2.25:1 on C9400X-SUP-2, so a design assuming clean line rate across all 24 ports should budget for the fractional overhead the mixed layout introduces.
3. The 17.12.1 Floor Rules Out Older Trains
This card requires Cisco IOS XE 17.12.1, later than the 17.8 floor of C9400-LC-48XS; an estate qualified on an earlier train reaches high-density fiber through the 10G card today and defers 25G until the software qualification catches up.
4. One Hundred Sixty Ports As The Practical Ceiling
Eight of these cards in a C9410R reach 160 ports at 25G, well short of the 384 ports of 10G the same chassis holds with C9400-LC-48XS; where the requirement is many moderate links rather than fewer fast ones, the 25G card consumes slots faster than it consumes bandwidth.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Supervisor engine class |
Confirm the target chassis holds C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL. |
The card is not supported on C9400-SUP-1, C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y and will not come into service on those engines. |
|
Software image floor |
Confirm the chassis runs Cisco IOS XE 17.12.1 or later. |
A chassis staged below that release will not bring the card into service even with a supported engine. |
|
Free line-card slot |
Confirm an unused line-card slot exists in the target C9404R, C9407R or C9410R. |
The card takes one full slot, and supervisor slots cannot accept line cards. |
|
SFP28 and SFP+ module line items |
Confirm the 25G and 10G optics are ordered separately and appear on the Cisco device support tables for this platform. |
The line card ships without optics, and an unlisted transceiver may be rejected by the host port. |
|
Port layout against the design |
Confirm the split of 20 ports at 25G and 4 ports at 10G matches the link plan. |
The layout is fixed, so a design needing more than 4 links at 10G has to use SFP+ optics in SFP28 ports or add a second card. |
|
Aggregate load against contention |
Confirm the planned traffic against 1.125:1 on C9400X-SUP-2XL or 2.25:1 on C9400X-SUP-2. |
Neither engine delivers clean line rate across all 24 ports on this card. |
|
Fiber type and reach |
Confirm the installed fiber plant matches the mode and reach of the chosen SFP28 and SFP+ optics. |
Twenty-five gigabit reach budgets are tighter than 10G on the same fiber, and an existing run may not carry the higher speed. |

On the C9400-LC-24XY line card:
- The figure illustrates four distinct port groups.
- In each port group:
- 4 ports support 25 Gbps connectivity.
- 1 port supports 10 Gbps connectivity.
- The total bandwidth per group is up to 120 Gbps.
- As a result, one port per group remains unused to stay within the bandwidth limit.
