C9400-LC-24XS Description

The C9400-LC-24XS is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series 24-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (SFP+) line card, a single-slot fiber module supporting up to 24 ports of 10GE SFP+ or 24 ports of 1GE SFP with both optic types usable together on the same card without restrictions. It is the only 10G fiber card in the family that runs on every Catalyst 9400 supervisor engine, from C9400-SUP-1 through C9400X-SUP-2XL, which distinguishes it from the C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC, C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48TX and C9400-LC-48XS cards that require a Supervisor 2 class engine. Cisco positions it for high-performance, high-density 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation in the campus and as a core switch in small to medium-sized networks, and for enterprise backbone and collapsed access deployments, with ports usable interchangeably at 1GE and 10GE to support phased migration. Bandwidth per slot and oversubscription both move with the installed engine: 80 Gbps at 3:1 with C9400-SUP-1, 240 Gbps at 1:1 on a C9404R chassis down to 80 Gbps at 3:1 on a C9410R with the C9400-SUP-1XL class, and 240 Gbps or 480 Gbps at 1:1 with C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL. The card draws a maximum rated 200 W, carries MACsec-256 in hardware and jumbo frames to 9216 bytes, and has shipped since Cisco IOS XE 16.6.2.

Existing Supervisor 1 Class Chassis

Added to C9404R, C9407R and C9410R chassis already running C9400-SUP-1, C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y, where the Supervisor 2 class fiber cards cannot be seated.

Staged Optic Migration Positions

Deployed where a fiber plant is moving from 1GE to 10GE run by run, with SFP and SFP+ modules mixed on the same card through the transition.

  • Reaching 48 ports of 10G fiber through C9400-LC-48XS costs both a C9400X-SUP-2 class engine and 2:1 oversubscription on that engine, while C9400-LC-24XS runs 1:1 under the same engine at half the ports; a design under about 24 fiber terminations avoids the engine purchase entirely by staying here.
  • Dropping to C9400-LC-24S trades 10G capability for a lower 120 W draw and a much higher 1,104,470-hour MTBF at the identical 24-port count and identical slot cost, so a room whose links will not exceed 1 GE is paying for unused speed on this card.
  • Oversubscription behavior separates the two 24-port cards on older engines. C9400-LC-24S stays 1:1 with C9400-SUP-1 while C9400-LC-24XS runs 3:1 on the same engine, so 10G ports on a base supervisor engine are contended three to one before any traffic profile is considered.
  • For deciding which SKU to order, fix the required port speed first because that separates C9400-LC-24S from the two 10G cards, then count terminations to choose between 24 and 48 ports, and read the installed supervisor engine last since only C9400-LC-48XS makes it a mandatory purchase.

Selection Guide

1. Ten Gigabit Fiber On A Base Supervisor Engine

C9400-LC-24XS is the 10G fiber card an installed C9400-SUP-1, C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y chassis can actually accept; reaching 10G fiber any other way in the family means adding C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL to the same order.

2. Three To One Contention On The Base Engine

With C9400-SUP-1 this card runs 3:1 oversubscribed at 80 Gbps per slot, and the C9400-SUP-1XL class only reaches 1:1 in a C9404R chassis; a design that needs sustained line rate across all 24 ports has to land on C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL regardless of which card is chosen.

3. One Hundred Twenty Watts Buys Back Reliability

Where the terminations will stay at 1 GE, C9400-LC-24S keeps the same 24 ports and the same slot for 120 W instead of 200 W and reaches 1,104,470 hours MTBF against 545,080 here, so unused 10G capability costs both power and rated life.

4. Twenty-Four Ports As The Growth Boundary

This card tops out at 192 ports in a fully loaded C9410R against 384 for the 48-port option, so a site expecting fiber counts to double is choosing between filling slots with 24-port cards now and funding a Supervisor 2 class engine once for the denser card.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Supervisor engine present

Confirm the target chassis holds one of the five supported supervisor engines.

The card performs no forwarding of its own, so an empty supervisor slot leaves all 24 ports inactive.

Software image floor

Confirm the chassis runs Cisco IOS XE 16.6.2 or later.

A chassis staged below that release will not bring the card into service.

Free line-card slot

Confirm an unused line-card slot exists in the target C9404R, C9407R or C9410R.

The card takes one full slot, and supervisor slots cannot accept line cards.

Contention against the engine

Confirm the aggregate traffic plan against 3:1 oversubscription if the chassis runs C9400-SUP-1, or against the chassis-dependent ratio on the C9400-SUP-1XL class.

Ten gigabit ports on an older engine are contended, and a design sized at line rate will fall short under load.

SFP+ and SFP module line items

Confirm the 10G and 1G optics are ordered separately and appear on the Cisco device support tables for this platform.

The line card ships without optics, and an unlisted transceiver may be rejected by the host port.

Fiber type and reach

Confirm the installed fiber plant matches the mode and reach of the chosen optics at both 1G and 10G.

Mixing optic speeds on one card does not relax the fiber plant requirements of either speed.

Facility power headroom

Confirm the chassis power budget absorbs 200 W per card across the planned card count.

The card sits above the 1G fiber options on draw and adds up quickly across a fully loaded chassis.

Questions & Answers

  • What is C9400-LC-24XS used for with 24-port 10G SFP+ and 1G fiber?

C9400-LC-24XS is a 24-port SFP+/SFP line card for 10G or 1G fiber connectivity in Catalyst 9400 chassis designs.
  • Does C9400-LC-24XS support 10G and 1G SFP+ fiber optics?

Yes. C9400-LC-24XS supports 10 GE or 1 GE operation using SFP+ or SFP optics, subject to platform transceiver support.
  • When does C9400-LC-24XS fit instead of C9400-LC-48XS for 10G SFP+ fiber?

C9400-LC-24XS fits smaller 10G fiber builds that need 24 SFP+/SFP ports and reserve chassis slots for copper, mGig, or QSFP line cards.
  • How is C9400-LC-24XS different from C9400-LC-24S for 10G SFP+?

    C9400-LC-24XS supports 10G or 1G fiber. C9400-LC-24S is a 24-port 1G SFP line card.
  • Is C9400-LC-24XS for copper or PoE access?

No. C9400-LC-24XS is an SFP+/SFP fiber line card. RJ-45 copper and powered endpoint access use different C9400 line cards.
  • Can C9400-LC-24XS be used for aggregation links?

Yes. C9400-LC-24XS fits 10G fiber aggregation or distribution links where 24 SFP+ ports are enough.
  • When is C9400-LC-24XS wrong for 25G SFP28, QSFP, or PoE?

C9400-LC-24XS is wrong for 25G SFP28 links, 40G or 100G QSFP links, copper access, or PoE endpoint power.
  • What 24-port 10G SFP+ fiber, optics, and slot planning details matter for C9400-LC-24XS?

C9400-LC-24XS planning centers on 24 SFP+/SFP ports, selected 10G or 1G optics, fiber reach, and whether a 24-port card leaves slots for other media types.
