C9407R Description
The C9407R is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series 7 slot chassis, the mid-size modular platform in the family and the one that carries five line cards behind a redundant supervisor pair. Slots 3 and 4 are reserved for supervisor engines and slots 1, 2 and 5 to 7 hold line cards, which sizes the chassis at up to 240 access ports of 1G copper, 1G fiber, 10G fiber or multigigabit, or 108 ports of 25G SFP28, 60 ports of 40G QSFP+ and 20 ports of 100G QSFP28 once a Supervisor 2 class engine is installed. Bandwidth per line-card slot depends on that engine and reads 480 Gbps with C9400X-SUP-2XL, 240 Gbps with C9400X-SUP-2, 120 Gbps with C9400-SUP-1XL and C9400-SUP-1XL-Y, and 80 Gbps with C9400-SUP-1. Eight power supply bays accept the 3200W AC, 2100W AC and 3200W DC modules in redundant N+N, redundant N+1 or combined mode, integrated PoE reaches 4320W per line-card slot with current shipping line cards, and 1+1 supervisor redundancy with NSF/SSO and ISSU keeps forwarding continuous through a switchover. The chassis occupies 10 RU at 63.0 lb (28.58 kg) with its C9407-FAN dual serviceable fan tray installed, and is the smallest member of the family for which Cisco lists a shelf install kit.

Product Performance
Key Features
Seven slots return five usable line-card positions because slots 3 and 4 are supervisor-only, giving a 71 percent slot yield that neither the 4 slot nor the 10 slot chassis matches on the same two-supervisor overhead.
This is the chassis where the supervisor choice separates most sharply: C9400X-SUP-2XL gives 480 Gbps per line-card slot, C9400X-SUP-2 gives 240 Gbps, and the C9400-SUP-1XL and C9400-SUP-1XL-Y pair sit at 120 Gbps, so a mid-tier engine buys exactly half the throughput of the Supervisor 2 class.
Doubling the power bay count while adding only three line-card slots over the smaller chassis leaves room to run N+N redundancy on separate input circuits and still hold spare capacity for a fully populated UPOE+ load.
Cisco lists C9407-SHELF-KIT= alongside the rack mount kit for this model, which allows installation in racks that cannot carry the full weight of a 63.0 lb chassis on rails alone.
Fitting 20 ports of 100G QSFP28 into a 10 RU envelope puts a campus core aggregation point inside a quarter rack, provided a C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL engine is fitted to unlock those densities.
The chassis has shipped since Cisco IOS XE 16.6.1 with C9400-SUP-1 and 16.6.2 with C9400-SUP-1XL, which lets it join an installed base held on an earlier train than the 16.9.1 floor the 4 slot chassis requires.
Application Scenarios
Installed in building distribution rooms terminating up to 240 access-layer uplinks across five line cards, with a redundant supervisor pair holding the routed boundary to the core.
Deployed in a 10 RU envelope as a campus core aggregation point where 100G QSFP28 uplinks must land in a shared rack rather than a dedicated core cabinet.
Racked in enclosures whose rails cannot carry a 63.0 lb chassis unaided, using the shelf install kit Cisco publishes for this chassis size.

- Ports per rack unit is where C9407R separates itself: 240 access ports in 10 RU works out to 24 ports per rack unit against 16 on C9404R and roughly 29.5 on C9410R, so the mid chassis takes the density argument only when the rack budget stops short of 13 RU.
- The supervisor decision inverts between the three. C9400-SUP-1XL yields 240 Gbps per line-card slot on C9404R but only 120 Gbps here and 80 Gbps on C9410R, which means an estate reusing that engine pays a throughput penalty for choosing this chassis and pays double the penalty for choosing the largest one.
- Weight rather than height drives the mechanical difference at the top of the range. C9407R at 63.0 lb (28.58 kg) and C9410R at 65.0 lb (29.48 kg) are within 2 lb of each other and both carry a shelf install kit, while C9404R at 39.0 lb (17.2 kg) has no shelf kit listed and is expected to sit on rails alone.
- For deciding which SKU to order, set the access-port target first, then check whether the rack can give up 13 RU, and treat the fan tray and rack kit as fixed consequences of that choice since C9404-FAN=, C9407-FAN= and C9410-FAN= are not interchangeable and the 480 Gbps maximum slot rate is common to all three.
Selection Guide
1. Half The Slot Rate On A Reused Supervisor
Bringing an existing C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y into this chassis yields 120 Gbps per line-card slot rather than the 240 Gbps the same engine produces in C9404R, so a supervisor reuse plan that assumed full rate has to either accept 2:1 slot oversubscription here or fund a C9400X-SUP-2 class engine.
2. Three Extra Cards For Four Rack Units
Moving from C9404R to this chassis adds three line-card slots and 144 access ports for four additional rack units and 24 lb of weight; where the port target lands under about 100 endpoints the smaller chassis returns the same 480 Gbps slot rate in less space.
3. Eight Bays Only Pay Off Above 115VAC
The eight power supply bays reach their value on the 230VAC range, where a 3200W AC unit contributes 3190W against 1560W on the 115VAC range; a site fixed at 115VAC needs roughly twice the supply count for the same PoE load and can exhaust the bay count faster than the slot count.
4. Where The Shelf Kit Decides The Chassis
Racks that cannot support a 63.0 lb chassis on rails have C9407-SHELF-KIT= available for this model, an option Cisco does not list for the 4 slot chassis; a rack with that limitation rules out C9404R on mechanical grounds before any port count is discussed.
5. High-Speed Densities Arrive With The Engine
The 108x 25G SFP28, 60x 40G QSFP+ and 20x 100G QSFP28 figures apply only with C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL, and the C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC, C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48TX and C9400-LC-48XS line cards carry the same requirement, so an order built around the C9400-SUP-1 class is limited to 10G line cards in this chassis.

Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Supervisor slot population |
Confirm supervisor engines are planned for slots 3 or 4 and line cards for slots 1, 2 and 5 to 7. |
Line cards are not supported in the supervisor slots, so a seven-line-card bill of materials cannot be seated in this chassis. |
|
Line card supervisor dependency |
Confirm the selected line cards are supported by the chosen supervisor engine. |
C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC, C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48TX and C9400-LC-48XS require C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL and will not operate with the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class. |
|
Software image floor |
Confirm the target Cisco IOS XE train meets 16.6.1 for C9400-SUP-1, 16.6.2 for C9400-SUP-1XL, 16.9.1 for C9400-SUP-1XL-Y or 17.7.1 for C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL. |
Each supervisor engine has a different floor on this chassis, and staging below it leaves the engine out of service. |
|
Power supply count and input |
Confirm how many C9400-PWR-3200ACT, C9400-PWR-3200AC, C9400-PWR-2100AC or C9400-PWR-3200DC units the eight bays need for the chosen redundancy mode and input voltage. |
Power supplies are separate order lines from the chassis PID, and the 115VAC derating roughly halves per-unit output. |
|
Chassis-specific fan tray |
Confirm the fan tray line item reads C9407-FAN=. |
C9404-FAN= and C9410-FAN= are built for the 4 slot and 10 slot chassis and do not fit this model. |
|
Rack, shelf and accessory kits |
Confirm C9407-ACC-KIT=, C9407-RACK-19-KIT= and, where rails cannot carry the load, C9407-SHELF-KIT= are on the order. |
These kits are chassis-specific, and a rack unable to support 63.0 lb on rails stalls at install without the shelf kit. |
|
Blank covers for empty bays |
Confirm C9400-S-BLANK= and C9400-PWR-BLANK= quantities match the unpopulated slot and power bay count. |
Open bays disturb the chassis airflow path that the dual serviceable fan tray depends on. |
|
Supervisor SSD option |
Confirm whether C9400-SSD-240GB, C9400-SSD-480GB or C9400-SSD-960GB is required for application hosting. |
The SSD is a supervisor line item rather than a chassis feature and cannot be added from the chassis PID. |
