C9410R Description
The C9410R is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series 10 slot chassis and the density ceiling of the family, holding eight line cards in slots 1 to 4 and 7 to 10 while slots 5 and 6 stay reserved for a redundant supervisor pair. Eight line-card slots put the platform at 384 access ports of 1G copper, 1G fiber, 10G fiber or multigigabit, 384 ports of 802.3bt Type 4 at 90W, or 168 ports of 25G SFP28, 96 ports of 40G QSFP+ and 32 ports of 100G QSFP28 once a Supervisor 2 class engine is installed. That supervisor choice matters more here than anywhere else in the family: bandwidth per line-card slot reads 480 Gbps with C9400X-SUP-2XL and 240 Gbps with C9400X-SUP-2, but falls to a flat 80 Gbps with C9400-SUP-1XL, C9400-SUP-1XL-Y and C9400-SUP-1 alike. Eight power supply bays take the 3200W AC, 2100W AC and 3200W DC modules in redundant N+N, redundant N+1 or combined mode, integrated PoE reaches 4320W per line-card slot with current shipping line cards, and 1+1 supervisor redundancy with NSF/SSO and ISSU holds forwarding through a switchover. The chassis occupies 13 RU at 65.0 lb (29.48 kg) with its C9410-FAN dual serviceable fan tray installed.

Product Performance
Key Features
Eight line-card slots produce 384 access ports, the highest figure any Catalyst 9400 chassis reaches, which lets a single managed device replace what would otherwise be four stacked fixed-configuration switches in a large wiring closet.
C9400-SUP-1XL and C9400-SUP-1XL-Y deliver the same 80 Gbps per line-card slot as the base C9400-SUP-1 in this chassis, so the price premium of the XL engines buys table scale and uplink options on this platform rather than slot throughput.
The chassis lists 384 ports of 802.3bt Type 4, but at max power 260 of them can draw a full 90W at the same time, which sets the realistic UPOE+ endpoint count for a fully populated build well below the raw port count.
Thirty-two ports of 100G QSFP28 across eight slots make this the only chassis in the family that can terminate a full campus core fabric without a second device, provided C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL is installed.
The power bay count matches the line-card slot count one to one, so a fully loaded PoE build has to plan supply redundancy and bay occupancy together rather than treating spare bays as free headroom.
At 22.61 x 17.30 x 16.30 in. the chassis takes 13 RU and weighs 65.0 lb (29.48 kg) with its fan tray, which makes rack height and lifting plan part of the site survey rather than an afterthought.
Application Scenarios
Installed as the campus core in multi-building sites, terminating up to 32 ports of 100G QSFP28 across eight line cards with a redundant supervisor pair holding the routed backbone.
Racked in main equipment rooms serving several floors, consolidating up to 384 access ports into one managed chassis instead of multiple stacked units.
Deployed where large numbers of 802.3bt Type 4 endpoints such as high-power access points, cameras and lighting fixtures terminate on one device, with 260 ports able to draw full 90W concurrently at max power.

Rated MTBF |
1,404,840 hours |
1,571,010 hours |
2,077,070 hours |
- Slot throughput and slot count move in opposite directions across this group. C9410R gives eight line-card slots but drops C9400-SUP-1XL to 80 Gbps per slot, C9407R gives five slots at 120 Gbps, and C9404R gives two slots at 240 Gbps, so buying the largest chassis on a Supervisor 1 class engine trades per-slot rate for port count rather than adding both.
- Rated MTBF runs inverse to size, at 1,404,840 hours on C9410R against 1,571,010 on C9407R and 2,077,070 on C9404R, which is worth weighing where a single chassis carries an entire building and no second device backs it up.
- Power bays stop scaling at the mid chassis. C9410R and C9407R both offer eight bays, but C9410R has eight line-card slots to feed against five, so the effective PoE headroom per slot is lower on the larger chassis even though the bay count is identical.
- For deciding which SKU to order, start from the access-port count since only C9410R clears 240 ports, then confirm 13 RU and a 65.0 lb lift are available, and treat the 4320W PoE per slot and the 480 Gbps maximum slot rate as common ground that does not separate the three models.
Selection Guide
1. When Eight Slots Justify The Flat 80 Gbps
Choosing this chassis with C9400-SUP-1XL or C9400-SUP-1XL-Y yields the same 80 Gbps per line-card slot as the base C9400-SUP-1, so the design only makes sense when the value sits in eight slots of port count; a build that needs both density and slot rate has to fund C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL alongside the chassis.
2. The 90W Concurrency Ceiling Shapes The Endpoint Plan
At max power 260 of the 384 802.3bt Type 4 ports can draw a full 90W at the same time, so a design assuming 384 concurrent 90W endpoints is roughly 32 percent over the supported figure and needs either a mixed power-class plan or a second chassis.
3. Two More Slots Against Three Rack Units
Stepping up from C9407R adds three line-card slots and 144 access ports for three additional rack units and 2 lb of weight while keeping the same eight power bays, which makes this the cheaper move per port whenever the rack can absorb 13 RU.
4. Where Chassis MTBF Enters The Design
At 1,404,840 hours this chassis carries the lowest rated MTBF in the family against 2,077,070 hours on C9404R, so a site consolidating an entire building onto one device either accepts that figure or splits the load across two smaller chassis for physical redundancy.
5. Line Card Inventory Survives The Engine Swap
Packet processing, queuing and QoS all run on the supervisor engine, so line cards bought for a C9400-SUP-1 class build take on the capabilities of a later C9400X-SUP-2XL without replacement; on a chassis holding eight cards that makes the engine, not the card inventory, the unit of upgrade.

Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Supervisor slot population |
Confirm supervisor engines are planned for slots 5 or 6 and line cards for slots 1 to 4 and 7 to 10. |
Line cards are not supported in the supervisor slots, so a ten-line-card bill of materials cannot be seated in this chassis. |
|
Line card supervisor dependency |
Confirm the selected line cards are supported by the chosen supervisor engine. |
C9400-LC-24XY, C9400-LC-12QC, C9400-LC-48HX, C9400-LC-48TX and C9400-LC-48XS require C9400X-SUP-2 or C9400X-SUP-2XL and will not operate with the C9400-SUP-1 supervisor class. |
|
Concurrent 90W port count |
Confirm the number of endpoints that must draw a full 90W at the same time against the 260-port concurrency figure. |
A design sized on 384 ports of 802.3bt Type 4 will exceed what the chassis can power concurrently at max power. |
|
Software image floor |
Confirm the target Cisco IOS XE train meets 16.6.1 for C9400-SUP-1, 16.6.2 for C9400-SUP-1XL, 16.9.1 for C9400-SUP-1XL-Y or 17.7.1 for C9400X-SUP-2 and C9400X-SUP-2XL. |
Each supervisor engine has a different floor on this chassis, and staging below it leaves the engine out of service. |
|
Power supply count and input |
Confirm how many C9400-PWR-3200ACT, C9400-PWR-3200AC, C9400-PWR-2100AC or C9400-PWR-3200DC units the eight bays need for the chosen redundancy mode and input voltage. |
Power supplies are separate order lines from the chassis PID, and eight line-card slots can consume the bay count before the slot count is full. |
|
Chassis-specific fan tray |
Confirm the fan tray line item reads C9410-FAN=. |
C9404-FAN= and C9407-FAN= are built for the smaller chassis and do not fit the 10 slot model. |
|
Rack, shelf and accessory kits |
Confirm C9410-ACC-KIT=, C9410-RACK-19-KIT= and, where rails cannot carry the load, C9410-SHELF-KIT= are on the order. |
These kits are chassis-specific, and a rack unable to support 65.0 lb on rails stalls at install without the shelf kit. |
|
Blank covers for empty bays |
Confirm C9400-S-BLANK= and C9400-PWR-BLANK= quantities match the unpopulated slot and power bay count. |
Open bays disturb the chassis airflow path that the dual serviceable fan tray depends on, and this chassis has the most bays to leave open. |
|
Supervisor SSD option |
Confirm whether C9400-SSD-240GB, C9400-SSD-480GB or C9400-SSD-960GB is required for application hosting. |
The SSD is a supervisor line item rather than a chassis feature and cannot be added from the chassis PID. |
