C9400-SUP-1 Description

C9400-SUP-1
C9400-SUP-1—often called the Catalyst 9400 Supervisor Engine 1—is the entry-level control-plane for Cisco’s modular 9400 campus switches. Powered by a Cisco UADP 2.0 ASIC, it delivers 80 Gbps per slot and a 1.44 Tbps switching fabric while offering flexible uplinks: eight non-blocking 10 G SFP+ ports or two 40 G QSFP+ ports. With MACsec-256 hardware encryption, 16 GB DRAM for feature-rich IOS XE, and optional 960 GB SSD for on-box applications, C9400-SUP-1 is the cost-efficient choice for secure access-layer and distribution deployments. Synonyms and long-tail keywords: C9400 Supervisor 1, Cisco C9400-SUP-1 module, Catalyst 9400 Sup1.

Key Features

Entry-level fabric with zero hidden costs

80 Gbps per slot sustains line-rate 1 G/PoE cards and leaves head-room for bursty office traffic without overspending on high-end silicon.

Flexible uplink personality

software-selectable mix of 8×10 G SFP+ or 2×40 G QSFP+ lets you adapt from legacy 10 G aggregation to modern 40 G cores with no extra hardware.

MACsec-256 everywhere

encrypt every access-layer port natively, meeting GDPR & HIPAA while avoiding external overlay devices.

Programmable UADP 2.0 pipeline

supports SDA, LISP, MPLS and template-based FIB/TCAM allocation for future services.

On-box application hosting

optional 960 GB SSD plus 16 GB DDR4 enable ThousandEyes, Wi-Fi analytics, or custom Python tooling at the edge.

Carrier-grade uptime

dual-supervisor SSO/NSF with ISSU keeps voice, video and IoT services online during upgrades or hardware fail-over.

Applications Scenarios

Secure wired access for enterprise campuses

MACsec-256 on every 1 G port plus PoE/UPoE line cards secure endpoints without extra crypto boxes.

Cost-optimised distribution layers in schools & hospitals

40 G QSFP uplinks aggregate multiple 1 G access stacks while keeping CapEx low.

Branch or building aggregation with IoT/PoE

Supports up to 384 PoE+ or 48 UPOE+ ports, ideal for CCTV, Wi-Fi 6 APs and smart-building sensors.

USB Type A Host Port

This USB port is a host port for an external USB disk drive. It supports USB versions 3.0, 2.0, 1.1, and 1.0.See USB Type A Host Port

2

USB mini Type B Console Port

This USB port can be used as a console port, allowing attachment to PCs that are not equipped with an RS-232 interface.See Console Ports.

3

10/100/1000 Ethernet Management Port (RJ-45 connector)

The Ethernet management port is a Layer 3 host port to which you can connect a PC. By default, the Ethernet management port is enabled. You can use the Ethernet management port instead of the switch console port for network management. This port is not active while the switch is operating normally.Note When connecting a PC to the Ethernet management port, you must assign an IP address.See Ethernet Management Port

4

Console port (RJ-45 connector)

This is an RS-232 serial or console port for system management.See Console Ports

5

RESET switch (recessed)

The RESET switch is used to reset and restart the switch.Note The reset switch is recessed into the front panel. Use a paper clip or a small, pointed object to press the RESET switch.

6

1-GigabitEthernet (GE) or 10-GE uplink ports

The supervisor module has eight 1-GE or 10-GE ports. These ports require either small form-factor pluggable (SFP) or SFP+ transceivers. Ports are numbered 1 to 8.Note In the accompanying figure, the ejector lever is not displayed in the redundant supervisor module only for the purpose of displaying the LEDs behind it.See Uplink Ports

7

RFID

Supervisor module Radio Frequency Identifier (RFID).Has a built-in, front-facing, non-removable, passive RFID tag that uses Ultra High Frequency (UHF) RFID technology and requires an RFID reader with compatible software. For more information, see Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) on Cisco Catalyst 9000 Family Switches.

8

40-GE uplink ports

The supervisor module has two 40-GE ports. These ports use QSFP transceivers. Ports are numbered 9 and 10.Note In the accompanying figure, the ejector lever is not displayed in the redundant supervisor module only for the purpose of displaying the LEDs behind it.See Uplink Ports

What is “Line-rate” and 1 : 1?

Term

Definition

Design Impact

Line-rate

Fabric bandwidth equals the sum of all port speeds.

Zero internal bottlenecks – every port can run at full speed.

Oversubscription

Fabric bandwidth less than total port speed. Expressed as 2 : 1, 4 : 1

Occasional congestion if many ports burst at once.

1 : 1

No oversubscription (pure line-rate).

Ideal for high-density Wi-Fi 6/6E, 100 G aggregation, low-latency apps.
