C9500-48X-E Description
The C9500-48X-E is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed core and aggregation switch for distribution blocks that need 48 10G fiber ports under Layer 2 and routed access. The switch has 40 10G SFP/SFP+ ports plus a C9500-NM-8X module with eight 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, with up to 960 Gbps of switching capacity and 64,000 MAC addresses under the default template. Network Essentials covers Layer 2, OSPF up to 1,000 routes and MACsec-128, but not StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, MPLS or MACsec-256.

Key Features
The base switch adds forty fixed ports to the module’s eight, giving a single 1 RU chassis that terminates 48 fiber links.
Each of the eight C9500-NM-8X ports can run at 1G or 10G, so mixed-speed fiber plants connect without extra media converters.
Layer 2, RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF up to 1,000 routes handle routed access, and MACsec-128 encrypts links.
The default distribution template offers 64,000 MAC addresses and 64,000 IPv4 / 32,000 IPv6 LPM routes, and the core template reallocates memory toward routes.
Two slots take PWR-C4-950WAC-R or PWR-C4-950WDC-R, and either supply can carry the switch alone.
A FAN-T4-R tray with up to five fans moves air front to back, and the fans are field replaceable.
Application Scenarios
In a large building’s distribution room, the switch gathers 10G fiber from every floor closet and routes between VLANs with OSPF before handing traffic to the campus core.
A server room with many 10G SFP+ hosts can attach them directly, using the 48 ports at Layer 2 with 10G fiber trunks toward the core.
A campus replacing aging gigabit aggregation can use the module’s 1/10G ports to keep existing gigabit fiber links alive while far ends move to 10G.

C9500-48X-E and C9500-40X-2Q-E share the C9500-40X base switch with 40 SFP/SFP+ ports, but C9500-48X-E carries a C9500-NM-8X module that adds eight 10G SFP/SFP+ ports for 48 in total, while C9500-40X-2Q-E carries a C9500-NM-2Q module with two 40G QSFP+ ports. A design with 40G uplinks should move to C9500-40X-2Q-E. Network Essentials covers Layer 2, routed access with OSPF up to 1,000 routes, and MACsec-128; when StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, MPLS or MACsec-256 is needed, order C9500-48X-A, which has the same hardware.
Ordering Checklist
- Software subscription: Add a term-based Catalyst Software Subscription or Cisco DNA subscription at the Essentials tier, to match the Network Essentials license of C9500-48X-E. Every new Catalyst 9500 order needs a subscription at the same tier as the license.
- Smart Account: Name the Smart Account that will receive the entitlement. The order must name one.
- Second power supply: The configurator preselects a second supply; select C9500-SPS-NONE to remove it. A redundant supply is ordered with the /2 suffix, such as PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2. Without it the switch has no 1+1 power redundancy.
- Power cords: Add a power cord for each supply on the order. The configuration cannot be completed without one.
- RFID option: Select C9500-RFID or C9500-RFID-NONE at order time. RFID cannot be added after delivery.
- Optics: Select SFP/SFP+ optics for the ports from the Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix, which lists supported optics per device.
