C9500X-60L4D-A Description

The C9500X-60L4D-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9500X Series fixed core and aggregation switch for campus distribution and server aggregation layers that need 25G and 50G downlinks. The switch has 60 10/25/50G SFP56 ports, 4 40/100/200/400G QSFP-DD ports, 9.2 Tbps of switching capacity and 8 Bpps of forwarding rate under Network Advantage. The SFP56 ports support 1G only through SFP-1G-SX/LH optics, and breakout cables work on the QSFP-DD ports only.

Key Features

60 SFP56 Ports For 10G, 25G And 50G

The downlink block runs 10G, 25G or 50G on every port. Dense server and building aggregation fits in one 1RU switch.

QSFP-DD Uplinks With Breakout

Four QSFP-DD ports take 40G, 100G, 200G and 400G modules, and breakout cables are supported on these four ports.

1G Limited To Two Optic Types

The SFP56 ports run 1G only with SFP-1G-SX or SFP-1G-LH optics, up to 8 modules per system, which matters when a few legacy links are still in use.

Network Advantage Only

The switch is offered only with Network Advantage, with 3-year, 5-year and 7-year Cisco DNA Advantage subscriptions. There is no Essentials variant of this model.

Silicon One Q200 At 9.2 Tbps

The Q200 ASIC delivers up to 9.2 Tbps of switching capacity and 8 Bpps of forwarding rate, with 32 GB of DRAM and 32 GB of flash.

Redundant Power And Six Fans

Two slots take 1500W AC or DC supplies, and six field-replaceable fans run front-to-back by default with a back-to-front option. Minimum software is Cisco IOS XE 17.10.1.

Application Scenarios

25G Server Aggregation

A data center row with 25G server connections can land them on the SFP56 ports, with the QSFP-DD ports carrying 100G or 400G links to the next tier.

Campus Distribution With 50G Downlinks

A campus distribution layer that aggregates 10G and 25G building switches uses the SFP56 ports for the downlinks and the QSFP-DD ports for the links toward the core.

Collapsed Core For A Mid-Size Site

A site with one core layer can connect its distribution and server links directly to the SFP56 ports and send traffic upstream over a pair of QSFP-DD links.

C9500X-60L4D-A is the SFP56 model of Catalyst 9500X, with 60 ports at 10G, 25G or 50G and 4 QSFP-DD ports, against 28 QSFP28 and 8 QSFP-DD ports on C9500X-28C8D-A, so 40G or 100G QSFP28 aggregation needs C9500X-28C8D-A, which also reaches up to 12 Tbps instead of 9.2 Tbps. C9500X-28C8D-E has the same hardware as C9500X-28C8D-A with Network Essentials, which suits a QSFP28 build that does not need Network Advantage, while C9500X-60L4D-A itself is the Network Advantage SKU. Breakout works only on its QSFP-DD ports, against odd-numbered QSFP28 ports plus all QSFP-DD ports on the other two. C9500X-60L4D-A also needs Cisco IOS XE Dublin 17.10.1b, while C9500X-28C8D-A and C9500X-28C8D-E start at Cupertino 17.7.1.

Ordering Checklist

  • Subscription tier: Add a term subscription at the Network Advantage tier, the same tier as the network license. The order requires it.
  • Smart Account: Name the Smart Account on the order, since new orders must specify one.
  • RFID option: Select an RFID option or C9500-RFID-NONE. RFID cannot be added after the order if it is declined at order time.
  • Power cords: Select a power cord for the destination, because the configuration cannot be completed without one.

Layer23 made me a believer in alternative sourcing. Same product, better terms. Minor delay in delivery, but everything was in order.

Questions & Answers

  • Which license tier does C9500X-60L4D-A carry?

C9500X-60L4D-A is offered only with Network Advantage, with Cisco DNA Advantage subscriptions in 3-year, 5-year and 7-year terms. The order requires a subscription at the Network Advantage tier, the same tier as the license, and a named Smart Account.
  • From which IOS XE release does C9500X-60L4D-A support StackWise Virtual and ISSU?

StackWise Virtual starts in IOS XE 17.11.1 on C9500X-60L4D-A, and ISSU starts in IOS XE 17.12.1. StackWise Virtual joins exactly two switches and needs the Network Advantage license, which this model carries. SSO on the 9500X requires StackWise Virtual. The pair must run at least IOS XE 17.11.1 before it can be formed.
  • Does C9500X-60L4D-A run MACsec-256 at line rate?

Yes. LAN MACsec-256 runs at line rate on all ports at speeds from 1G to 100G, and it needs Network Advantage, which the -A suffix carries. WAN MACsec is available on the 9500X because it is a Silicon One feature, and it also needs Network Advantage on this platform.
  • Which breakout port counts does C9500X-60L4D-A list for 10/25G links?

C9500X-60L4D-A lists 76 x 10/25G ports with breakout cables on a single standalone switch, and 92 are hardware capable. That count is the 60 native SFP56 ports plus the four 40/100/200/400G ports broken out. Hardware-capable counts are not yet available, so plan around the lower figure.
  • What can the custom SDM template change on C9500X-60L4D-A?

The custom template sets the MAC table between 32K and 256K entries, with 128K as the default, and MPLS labels between 0 and 512K, with 256K as the default. Total resources are 608K, so raising one table lowers another. A template change requires a reload before it takes effect.
  • Do security and QoS ACLs share one table on C9500X-60L4D-A?

Yes. Security and QoS ACLs draw on one shared hardware resource, with a table maximum of 8,000 IPv4 and 4,000 IPv6 entries. Adding QoS entries therefore leaves less room for security entries, so size both policies together before deployment.
  • What CPU and memory does C9500X-60L4D-A use?

C9500X-60L4D-A uses an Intel 2.3 GHz x86 CPU with 8 cores and 32 GB of DDR4, plus up to 8 GB of HBM and an 80 MB on-chip low-latency buffer. The flash is 32 GB. These figures are shared by both Catalyst 9500X models.
  • Which console and management ports does C9500X-60L4D-A have?

C9500X-60L4D-A has a USB-C console, an RJ-45 management port and a USB 3.0 host port, plus a built-in passive RFID tag. The RFID tag is part of the chassis and is selected in the order, because it cannot be added afterwards. The RJ-45 port is for management traffic, so use the USB-C console when a laptop has no serial adapter.
  • How deep is C9500X-60L4D-A, and how efficient are its power supplies?

The 1RU chassis is 17.5 in wide and 21.8 in deep including the fan and tray handles, so rack depth must allow for the handles. The C9K-PWR-1500WAC and C9K-PWR-1500WDC supplies are Platinum rated at 90% efficiency, and the variable-speed fans run in front-to-back or back-to-front airflow.
  • Does C9500X-60L4D-A accept C9500-NM-8X or C9500-NM-2Q network modules?

No. Neither C9500-NM-8X nor C9500-NM-2Q is supported on C9500X-60L4D-A, according to the network module matrix in the Catalyst 9500 data sheet. Those modules are used only in C9500-16X-A and C9500-16X-E, so the uplink capacity is the four fixed QSFP-DD ports.
