C9500-16X-A Description
The C9500-16X-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed-configuration switch for campus core and aggregation layers. The switch has 16 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, an uplink bay for an optional 8-port 10G or 2-port 40G network module, 480 Gbps of switching capacity, 360 Mpps of forwarding and 64,000 MAC addresses. The -A suffix carries Network Advantage, which adds BGP, VXLAN, MPLS, StackWise Virtual and MACsec-256 to the Layer 2 and routed access features of Network Essentials.

Product Performance
Key Features
The bay takes the 8-port 1/10G SFP/SFP+ module or the 2-port 40G QSFP+ module. Uplink capacity is set by the module chosen, and the chassis ships without one.
The UADP 2.0 ASIC holds 64,000 MAC addresses and 64,000 indirect IPv4 routes, with up to 80,000 host routes in total.
Network Advantage adds BGP, IS-IS, VRF, VXLAN, LISP, BGP-EVPN and MPLS, so the switch can route and segment a core instead of only aggregating Layer 2.
Two chassis join as one logical switch with multichassis EtherChannel, and SSO and ISSU run over the StackWise Virtual Link.
Link encryption with 256-bit AES-GCM is available on the Advantage tier, against MACsec-128 on Network Essentials.
Two power supply slots hold 950W AC or DC supplies in a 1+1 pair, and the FAN-T4-R fan module cools front to back.
Application Scenarios
In a campus building, a pair of switches can act as the core, routing between VRFs with BGP or OSPF and staying redundant through StackWise Virtual.
A distribution layer that gathers access switches over 10G fiber can add the 2-port 40G QSFP+ network module for links up to the core.
A small data center row with 10G SFP+ hosts can terminate on the 16 fixed ports, and VXLAN with BGP-EVPN is available to segment tenants.

C9500-16X-A and C9500-16X-E share the same 16 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, 480 Gbps UADP 2.0 hardware and default PWR-C4-950WAC-R supply; the difference is the license, because the -E carries Network Essentials, which covers Layer 2, routed access with OSPF up to 1000 routes and MACsec-128. BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN, StackWise Virtual and MACsec-256 need the Network Advantage tier of C9500-16X-A, so a role that stays at routed access can order C9500-16X-E. The C9500-16X-A base PID ships with an empty uplink bay: C9500-24X-A bundles the C9500-NM-8X module for eight 10G uplinks, and C9500-16X-2Q-A bundles the C9500-NM-2Q module for two 40G QSFP+ uplinks.
Ordering Checklist
- Subscription and Smart Account: Add a term-based Catalyst Software Subscription or Cisco DNA subscription at the Network Advantage tier, such as C9500-DNA-L-A-3Y, C9500-DNA-L-A-5Y or C9500-DNA-L-A-7Y, and name a Smart Account on the order. The order cannot be completed without both.
- Second power supply: A second supply is preselected by default; select C9500-SPS-NONE to remove it, or order PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2 for a redundant AC supply. The default adds a supply the site may not need.
- Power cord: Select a power cord before the configuration is complete. The configurator will not finish without a cord selection.
- Network module: Add C9500-NM-8X (eight 10G SFP ports) or C9500-NM-2Q (two 40G QSFP ports), or a bundled PID that already includes one. The base PID carries neither, and the switch should run with a network module or a blank module installed.
