C9500-40X-2Q-E Description
The C9500-40X-2Q-E is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed core and aggregation switch for campus aggregation blocks that run Layer 2 and routed access over 10G fiber. The switch has 40 10G SFP/SFP+ ports, a C9500-NM-2Q module with two 40G QSFP+ ports, up to 960 Gbps of switching capacity and 64,000 MAC addresses under the default template. Network Essentials covers Layer 2, OSPF up to 1,000 routes and MACsec-128, but not StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, MPLS or MACsec-256.

Key Features
Forty fixed ports take SFP+ optics, which suits fiber-heavy aggregation where every access closet arrives on its own 10G link.
The C9500-NM-2Q module provides two QSFP+ ports, and a blank module can stand in when the uplinks are not needed.
Layer 2, RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF up to 1,000 routes cover routed access and a conventional distribution role. MACsec-128 protects links at that tier.
The default distribution template allows 64,000 MAC addresses and 64,000 IPv4 / 32,000 IPv6 LPM routes. Switching to the core template gives 32,000 multicast routes in exchange for 16,000 MAC addresses.
Two power supply slots hold PWR-C4-950WAC-R or PWR-C4-950WDC-R, and one supply keeps the switch running if the other fails.
The chassis is 1 RU high with five front-to-back fans in a FAN-T4-R tray that can be replaced in the field.
Application Scenarios
In a building distribution room, the switch terminates 10G fiber from access closets and routes between VLANs with OSPF, sending traffic to the core over its 40G QSFP+ uplinks.
A server room with 10G fiber-attached hosts can use the switch as its Layer 2 aggregation point, with two 40G QSFP+ trunks running to the campus core.
On a campus where several buildings connect back by single-mode or multimode fiber, the switch acts as a hub that gathers those 10G links and passes them upstream at 40G.

C9500-40X-2Q-E and C9500-48X-E share the C9500-40X base switch with 40 SFP/SFP+ ports, but C9500-40X-2Q-E carries a C9500-NM-2Q module with two 40G QSFP+ ports, while C9500-48X-E carries a C9500-NM-8X module with eight more 10G SFP/SFP+ ports for 48 in total. A design that needs 48 10G fiber ports and no 40G uplink should move to C9500-48X-E. Network Essentials covers Layer 2, routed access with OSPF up to 1,000 routes, and MACsec-128; when StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, MPLS or MACsec-256 is needed, order C9500-40X-2Q-A, which has the same hardware.
Ordering Checklist
- Software subscription: Add a term-based Catalyst Software Subscription or Cisco DNA subscription at the Essentials tier, to match the Network Essentials license of C9500-40X-2Q-E. Every new Catalyst 9500 order needs a subscription at the same tier as the license.
- Smart Account: Name the Smart Account that will receive the entitlement. The order must name one.
- Second power supply: The configurator preselects a second supply; select C9500-SPS-NONE to remove it. A redundant supply is ordered with the /2 suffix, such as PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2. Without it the switch has no 1+1 power redundancy.
- Power cords: Add a power cord for each supply on the order. The configuration cannot be completed without one.
- RFID option: Select C9500-RFID or C9500-RFID-NONE at order time. RFID cannot be added after delivery.
- Optics: Select SFP/SFP+ and QSFP+ optics for the ports from the Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix, which lists supported optics per device.
