C9500-16X-E Description
The C9500-16X-E is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed-configuration switch for campus aggregation and routed access. The switch has 16 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, an uplink bay for an optional 8-port 10G or 2-port 40G network module, 480 Gbps of switching capacity, 360 Mpps of forwarding and 64,000 MAC addresses. The -E suffix carries Network Essentials, which covers Layer 2, routed access with OSPF up to 1,000 routes and MACsec-128 but not BGP, VXLAN or StackWise Virtual.

Product Performance
Key Features
The bay takes the 8-port 1/10G SFP/SFP+ module or the 2-port 40G QSFP+ module, and the chassis ships without one.
Layer 2 forwarding and routed access with RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF up to 1,000 routes are included. BGP, VRF and VXLAN need the Advantage tier.
Network Essentials includes 128-bit MACsec on the ports, while 256-bit MACsec and WAN MACsec belong to Network Advantage.
Each of the 16 SFP/SFP+ ports negotiates 1G or 10G on its own, so one chassis can aggregate a mix of older and newer downstream links.
The UADP 2.0 ASIC holds 64,000 MAC addresses and 64,000 indirect IPv4 routes, with up to 80,000 host routes in total.
Two power supply slots hold 950W AC or DC supplies in a 1+1 pair, and the FAN-T4-R fan module cools front to back.
Application Scenarios
In a campus block where an upstream core handles routing, the switch collects access-switch uplinks at Layer 2 on its 1/10G ports.
A small building can run routed access on the switch with RIP, EIGRP Stub or OSPF, staying inside the 1,000-route Essentials limit.
Wiring closets with fiber uplinks can land on the 8-port 1/10G SFP/SFP+ module, which adds eight 10G links to the 16 fixed ports.

C9500-16X-E and C9500-24X-E share the same 16 fixed 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, but C9500-24X-E ships with the 8-port 10G SFP module bundled while C9500-16X-E leaves the module bay empty, which suits an order that adds no uplink module or picks one as a separate line. A design already committed to 40G uplinks can order C9500-16X-2Q-E, which bundles the 2-port 40G QSFP module on the same Network Essentials license. Network Essentials on C9500-16X-E covers Layer 2, routed access with RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF up to 1,000 routes, and MACsec-128; full BGP and OSPF routing, VXLAN or StackWise Virtual need C9500-16X-A, and an installed switch can move up later with the C9500-DNA-16X-E-A upgrade license.
Ordering Checklist
- Subscription tier: Add an Essentials term subscription: C9500-DNX-E-16X-3Y, -5Y or -7Y. The term subscription must match the Network Essentials license tier.
- Network module: Install C9500-NM-8X, C9500-NM-2Q, or a blank module in the uplink bay. The switch should only be operated with a network module or a blank module installed.
- Second power supply: A second PWR-C4-950WAC-R is preselected by the configurator; C9500-SPS-NONE removes it. The default adds a supply the design may not need.
- Airflow: FAN-T4-R and PWR-C4-950WAC-R are both front-to-back cooling parts. The rack airflow direction has to match the cooling parts on the order.
- RFID option: Select C9500-RFID or C9500-RFID-NONE on the order. The RFID choice cannot be added after the switch ships.
- Power cord: Add a power cord line item for each supply. The configuration cannot be completed without a cord selection.
