C9500-40X-E Description
The C9500-40X-E is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed core and aggregation switch with a Network Essentials license, built for distribution layers that terminate dozens of 10G fiber links. The switch has 40 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, one uplink slot for an 8-port 10G or 2-port 40G network module, 960 Gbps of switching capacity and 64,000 MAC addresses under the default template. The base hardware carries no network module, and the uplink slot must hold either a module or a blank before the switch is operated.

Key Features
The uplink slot takes either C9500-NM-8X, which brings the switch to 48 10G SFP/SFP+ ports, or C9500-NM-2Q with two 40G QSFP+ ports. Each of those 40G ports can also run as four 10G ports over a breakout cable, so the 2-port module still serves eight 10G links when 40G is not needed.
The default distribution template holds 64,000 MAC addresses, 64,000 IPv4 and 32,000 IPv6 LPM routes, and 48,000 IPv4 host routes. The core template doubles multicast routes to 32,000 at the cost of MAC capacity, which drops to 16,000; the NAT template raises PBR and NAT entries from 2,000 to 16,000.
Network Essentials runs Layer 2 and routed access with RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF up to 1,000 routes, plus VRRP, PIM Stub, MACsec-128 and SSO. BGP, VRF, VXLAN, MPLS, StackWise Virtual and MACsec-256 sit in Network Advantage and are not available on this license.
NETCONF, RESTCONF, gRPC, YANG models and model-driven telemetry are part of Network Essentials. Programmatic configuration and streaming telemetry therefore run on this switch without moving to the Advantage tier.
Two hot-swappable slots accept PWR-C4-950WAC-R on 90 to 264 VAC or PWR-C4-950WDC-R on -36 to -72 VDC. The switch ships with one supply installed, and a second unit in the other slot gives 1+1 redundancy.
Five variable-speed FAN-T4-R fans cool the chassis front to back, and each one can be swapped while the switch runs for up to 120 seconds. Sound power stays at or below 68.3 LWAd dB.
Application Scenarios
In a building distribution room, the switch terminates 10G fiber runs from each access closet and routes between floors with OSPF, sending traffic toward the campus core over its uplink module.
A campus with a handful of buildings can run its core and distribution on one tier, with VRRP keeping the default gateway available across a pair of these switches and OSPF carrying routes to the WAN edge.
Servers and storage arrays with 10G SFP+ interfaces connect directly to the 40 downlink ports, and a 40G QSFP+ module carries their traffic to the core as Layer 2 trunks.

C9500-40X-E and C9500-40X-A are the same 40-port 10G switch, and the license is the only difference: Network Advantage adds BGP, VRF, VXLAN, MPLS, StackWise Virtual and MACsec-256 to the Layer 2 and OSPF routed access of Network Essentials. A core pair that must run as one StackWise Virtual system, or that peers with BGP, needs C9500-40X-A from the start. An installed C9500-40X-E moves up later with the C9500-DNA-40X-E-A upgrade license, which cannot be applied at the time of purchase. When 40G uplinks are fixed at design time, C9500-40X-2Q-E bundles the C9500-NM-2Q module, and C9500-48X-E bundles C9500-NM-8X for 48 10G ports. Sites that need only 16 fiber ports can drop to C9500-16X-E at 480 Gbps and 360 Mpps.
Ordering Checklist
- Software subscription: Add an Essentials term that matches Network Essentials, either C9500-DNX-E-40X-3Y, -5Y or -7Y or C9500-DNA-E-3Y, -5Y or -7Y. A new order cannot be completed without a subscription at the license tier.
- Smart Account: Name the Smart Account that receives the license entitlements. Cisco requires one on every Catalyst 9500 order.
- Second power supply: The configurator preselects a second supply; keep it for 1+1 redundancy or select C9500-SPS-NONE to remove it. A spare redundant AC unit orders as PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2.
- Uplink network module: The C9500-40X-E line carries no network module, so add C9500-NM-8X or C9500-NM-2Q when the uplink slot will be used. The slot must hold a module or a blank before the switch runs.
- Power cords: Select a power cord type for the destination country for each supply. The configuration cannot be completed without one.
- Optics: Order SFP/SFP+ and QSFP+ optics separately, choosing part numbers listed for Catalyst 9500 in the Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix.
