C9500-40X-2Q-A Description
The C9500-40X-2Q-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed core and aggregation switch for campus distribution layers that need dense 10G fiber with 40G uplinks. The switch has 40 10G SFP/SFP+ ports, a C9500-NM-2Q module with two 40G QSFP+ ports, up to 960 Gbps of switching capacity and 64,000 MAC addresses under the default template. The Network Advantage license adds StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN, MPLS and MACsec-256, which Network Essentials does not include.

Product Performance
Key Features
The base switch carries forty SFP/SFP+ ports, so a distribution layer can terminate many 10G closet and server links without breakout cabling.
The C9500-NM-2Q module adds two QSFP+ ports for trunks toward the core. The switch must run with either a network module or a blank module installed.
Full routing with BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS and OSPF comes with VRF, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN, MPLS and MACsec-256, so the same switch can carry segmented and encrypted traffic.
Two switches can run as one logical device, with stateful switchover and in-service software upgrade running over the StackWise Virtual link.
The default distribution template provides 64,000 MAC addresses and 64,000 IPv4 / 32,000 IPv6 LPM routes. The core template trades MAC space down to 16,000 for more host and multicast routes.
Two power supply slots accept PWR-C4-950WAC-R or PWR-C4-950WDC-R for 1+1 redundancy, and the FAN-T4-R tray holds up to five front-to-back fans.
Application Scenarios
In a campus distribution layer, the switch collects 10G fiber links from access-layer closets and sends the aggregated traffic to the core over its two 40G QSFP+ uplinks.
Two switches joined by StackWise Virtual can serve a small campus as a single logical core, with multichassis EtherChannel to the distribution and access switches below.
A small data center can place the switch at the edge of the server row, with 10G fiber facing the servers, 40G toward the spine, and VXLAN with BGP-EVPN for segmentation.

C9500-40X-2Q-A and C9500-48X-A share the C9500-40X base switch with 40 SFP/SFP+ ports, but C9500-40X-2Q-A carries a C9500-NM-2Q module with two 40G QSFP+ ports, while C9500-48X-A carries a C9500-NM-8X module with eight more 10G SFP/SFP+ ports for 48 in total. A design that needs 48 10G fiber ports and no 40G uplink should move to C9500-48X-A. Network Advantage adds StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN, MPLS and MACsec-256 over Network Essentials, so a core that uses none of them can take C9500-40X-2Q-E, which has the same hardware and loses those features.
Ordering Checklist
- Software subscription: Add a term-based Catalyst Software Subscription or Cisco DNA subscription at the Advantage tier, to match the Network Advantage license of C9500-40X-2Q-A. Every new Catalyst 9500 order needs a subscription at the same tier as the license.
- Smart Account: Name the Smart Account that will receive the entitlement. The order must name one.
- Second power supply: The configurator preselects a second supply; select C9500-SPS-NONE to remove it. A redundant supply is ordered with the /2 suffix, such as PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2. Without it the switch has no 1+1 power redundancy.
- Power cords: Add a power cord for each supply on the order. The configuration cannot be completed without one.
- RFID option: Select C9500-RFID or C9500-RFID-NONE at order time. RFID cannot be added after delivery.
- Optics: Select SFP/SFP+ and QSFP+ optics for the ports from the Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix, which lists supported optics per device.
