C9500-48X-A Description
The C9500-48X-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series fixed core and aggregation switch for campus distribution layers and server aggregation that run entirely on 10G fiber. The switch has 40 10G SFP/SFP+ ports plus a C9500-NM-8X module with eight 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports, 48 in total, with up to 960 Gbps of switching capacity and 64,000 MAC addresses under the default template. The Network Advantage license adds StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN, MPLS and MACsec-256, and the module has no 40G ports.

Product Performance
Key Features
Forty fixed ports and eight module ports all take SFP or SFP+ optics, so downlinks, uplinks and stack links share one optic type.
The C9500-NM-8X module runs each port at 1G or 10G, which lets older gigabit fiber links move onto the switch before their far ends are upgraded.
BGP, IS-IS and EIGRP routing, VRF, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN and MPLS come with the license, along with MACsec-256 for link encryption.
Two switches form one logical device, and stateful switchover and in-service software upgrade run across the StackWise Virtual link.
The default distribution template provides 64,000 MAC addresses and 64,000 IPv4 / 32,000 IPv6 LPM routes, enough for a large aggregation block.
Two supply slots take PWR-C4-950WAC-R or PWR-C4-950WDC-R for 1+1 redundancy, and the FAN-T4-R tray holds up to five fans.
Application Scenarios
A campus distribution room with many access closets on 10G fiber can land all of them on one switch, using the 48 SFP/SFP+ ports for downlinks and uplinks alike.
In a small data center, the switch connects 10G SFP+ servers and storage heads at the top of a row, and VXLAN with BGP-EVPN carries tenant segments to the rest of the fabric.
A campus that has outgrown a single core can pair two switches with StackWise Virtual, so building distribution switches dual-home to one logical core over multichassis EtherChannel.

C9500-48X-A and C9500-40X-2Q-A share the C9500-40X base switch with 40 SFP/SFP+ ports, but C9500-48X-A carries a C9500-NM-8X module that adds eight 10G SFP/SFP+ ports for 48 in total, while C9500-40X-2Q-A carries a C9500-NM-2Q module with two 40G QSFP+ ports. A design with 40G uplinks should move to C9500-40X-2Q-A. Network Advantage adds StackWise Virtual, VXLAN, BGP-EVPN, MPLS and MACsec-256 over Network Essentials, so a core that uses none of them can take C9500-48X-E, which has the same hardware and loses those features.
Ordering Checklist
- Software subscription: Add a term-based Catalyst Software Subscription or Cisco DNA subscription at the Advantage tier, to match the Network Advantage license of C9500-48X-A. Every new Catalyst 9500 order needs a subscription at the same tier as the license.
- Smart Account: Name the Smart Account that will receive the entitlement. The order must name one.
- Second power supply: The configurator preselects a second supply; select C9500-SPS-NONE to remove it. A redundant supply is ordered with the /2 suffix, such as PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2. Without it the switch has no 1+1 power redundancy.
- Power cords: Add a power cord for each supply on the order. The configuration cannot be completed without one.
- RFID option: Select C9500-RFID or C9500-RFID-NONE at order time. RFID cannot be added after delivery.
- Optics: Select SFP/SFP+ optics for the ports from the Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix, which lists supported optics per device.
