C8151-CVAP-G2 Description
The C8151-CVAP-G2 is the upper tier of the POTS-side DSL routers in the Cisco 8100 Series. It shares the RJ-11 modem for VDSL and ADSL over POTS with the smaller C8130-VAP-G2 and raises everything around it: forwarding moves from 1.9 Gbps to 5.6 Gbps, LAN ports from two to six, the route table from 280K to 500K, and Cisco marks the model SD-WAN Capable Yes with 900 Mbps of SD-WAN and 1 Gbps of Threat Protection published. An embedded 5G Release 17 radio with dual nano SIM slots is built into the chassis, and the XGSPON/10G BASE-T port carries a passive optical service. The fanless body weighs 5.1 lb, draws 27W typical, and starts at Cisco IOS XE 26.1.1.

Key Features
C8130-VAP-G2 carries the same POTS-side modem at 1.9 Gbps; this chassis raises forwarding to 5.6 Gbps, which is what lets a broadband branch actually use a fast VDSL2 profile or an XGS-PON service.
The route table moves to 500K with 4K VRFs, so a segmented design separating guest, corporate and device traffic is possible at a site whose access circuit is consumer-grade copper.
Threat Protection is published at 1 Gbps with NAT, zone-based firewall, intrusion prevention, URL filtering and malware protection all enabled, a figure the routing-only DSL models do not carry at all.
The embedded 5G Release 17 module with dual nano SIM slots sits alongside the DSL and XGSPON interfaces, so wired and wireless diversity are both internal to the router.
Wired capacity triples against the smaller POTS-side model, which is what allows this unit to replace a separate access switch at a small site.
Typical draw is 27W, the highest in the 8100 range, reflecting the radio, the modem and the larger forwarding tier in one fanless 5.1 lb body.
Application Scenarios
Deployed where a POTS-delivered DSL or PON service feeds a site that separates traffic into multiple VRFs.
Installed where firewall, intrusion prevention and URL filtering run on the router at a broadband-fed location.
Placed where one chassis replaces a modem, a router, a small switch and a cellular gateway.

Cisco IOS XE 26.1.1 |
Cisco IOS XE 26.1.1 |
- C8151-CVAP-G2 and C8151-CVAI-G2 differ only at the modem, POTS-delivered against ISDN-delivered, and match on the four access paths, the six LAN ports, the embedded radio, the SD-WAN figures, the 500K table and the 26.1.1 floor.
- The more consequential comparison is downward. C8130-VAP-G2 carries the identical POTS-side modem and the same three wired access interfaces but stops at 1.9 Gbps forwarding, two LAN ports, 280K routes and 1K VRFs, and is marked SD-WAN Capable No with no embedded radio.
- That gap means the two POTS-side models are not interchangeable at a site. A branch needing fabric management, local inspection, cellular backup or more than four wired devices has to be on this chassis, and one needing none of those is over-provisioned here by 4W and 1.6 lb.
- For deciding which SKU to order, size the site against the smaller model first, since C8130-VAP-G2 covers the same line technology; move here when fabric membership, VRF count, wired device count or wireless backup rules it out, and switch to C8151-CVAI-G2 only if the survey returns an ISDN-delivered loop.
Selection Guide
1. Where The Small POTS Model Runs Out
C8130-VAP-G2 shares the modem and the access interfaces but gives two LAN ports, 1.9 Gbps forwarding, 280K routes and no fabric capability; a site exceeding any one of those four limits moves here, and a site inside all of them does not benefit from the larger chassis.
2. VRF Count Often Decides Before Throughput
The jump from 1K to 4K VRFs is proportionally larger than the jump in forwarding, so a segmented broadband branch typically hits the VRF ceiling on the smaller model well before it saturates 1.9 Gbps.
3. Local Inspection Requires This Tier
Threat Protection at 1 Gbps is published only for the SD-WAN capable models; a broadband site running firewall and intrusion prevention on the router itself cannot do so on C8130-VAP-G2, which carries no such figure.
4. Cellular Backup Is Not Retrofittable
The 5G module is embedded in this chassis and absent from the smaller POTS-side model, so adding a wireless path later means replacing the router rather than fitting a module.
5. Only The Survey Distinguishes The Annex Pair
C8151-CVAI-G2 matches this model on every published figure except the DSL family; a specification written from throughput, ports or power cannot choose between them, and the local loop type is the deciding input.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Local loop delivery type |
Confirm the line is POTS-delivered and matches Annex A. |
C8151-CVAI-G2 carries the ISDN variant and the two are otherwise identical. |
|
Site sizing against the smaller model |
Confirm the site exceeds two LAN ports, 1.9 Gbps, 280K routes or 1K VRFs, or needs fabric or cellular. |
C8130-VAP-G2 carries the same modem and access ports and is the right choice below all of those thresholds. |
|
Carrier SIM profiles |
Confirm which carrier profiles will occupy the two nano SIM slots. |
The radio is embedded and the SIMs are the only per-site cellular decision. |
|
Cellular band coverage |
Confirm the deployment region falls inside the published 5G FR1 and LTE band list. |
The module is fixed in the chassis and cannot be exchanged for a regional variant. |
|
XGS-PON readiness |
Confirm whether the optical port will be used at commissioning or after a later cutover. |
The port ships fitted either way, but an active PON service needs the provider handoff. |
|
Software image floor |
Confirm the image is Cisco IOS XE 26.1.1 or later. |
The DSL models sit on a different release family from C8151-G2 and C8161-G2 at 17.18.1. |
|
Mounting hardware |
Confirm which of rackmount, desktop, under-desk or DIN-rail mounting the site uses and that the accessory is on the order. |
Each mounting position needs its own hardware. |
