The C8231-E-G2 is a Cisco 8200 Series Secure Router in a 1 RU modular chassis for branches that add serial, async or cellular connectivity. The router has 2x 1/10 GE SFP+ and 2x 2.5 GE mGig RJ-45 WAN ports with 2x UPOE+, one NIM slot, one PIM slot, 19 Gbps of forwarding, 5 Gbps of IPsec and 8 GB of DRAM. The default 140 W AC internal supply carries no PoE, and the 150 W AC for PoE adapter provides a 120W budget.

Forwarding, IPsec and SD-WAN run at 19, 5 and 4 Gbps, the same figures as C8235-E-G2.
With 8 GB of DRAM and 1 Gbps of Threat protection, the router suits designs that run a lighter set of services on the box.
One NIM slot and one PIM slot let serial, async, Ethernet or cellular modules be added later.
The 140 W AC internal default is joined by a 150 W AC for PoE adapter, a secondary PSU adapter, a 150 W AC-DC and a 150 W DC-DC supply.
The -5 to 55 degrees C NEBS range up to 6000 feet needs an additional third fan assembly.
At 1 RU and 8.36 lbs the chassis racks directly, with no mounting tray.
Application Scenarios
At a branch whose deep inspection runs at a regional hub, the router handles SD-WAN at 4 Gbps and encryption at 5 Gbps with 1 Gbps of Threat protection.
At a site with legacy serial or async equipment, the NIM slot takes a serial or async module while the WAN ports connect to the carrier.
In a branch closet with a 19-inch rack, the 1 RU chassis mounts directly and powers up to 120W of endpoints from the two UPOE+ ports with the PoE adapter.

C8231-E-G2 and C8235-E-G2 share the 1 RU chassis, the NIM and PIM slots, 19 Gbps forwarding and a 120W PoE ceiling with the PoE adapter, but C8231-E-G2 has 8 GB of DRAM and 1 Gbps of Threat protection against 16 GB and 2.4 Gbps. A site that inspects traffic on the router above 1 Gbps needs C8235-E-G2, and a site that inspects at a hub does not. C8231-G2 is the desktop alternative: it has no NIM or PIM slot and stops at 30W of PoE, but adds two Flex and four LAN copper ports, so a branch with no module and under 30W of powered endpoints can use it. All three start at Cisco IOS XE Release 17.18.1.

Ordering Checklist
- PoE power supply: Add the 150 W AC for PoE external adapter, which gives a 120W PoE budget. The default 140 W AC internal supply carries no PoE budget.
- Secondary power supply: Add a Secondary PSU option, either 150 W AC-DC or 150 W DC-DC external adapter. A DC-fed site needs the DC-DC option, since the default internal supply is AC.
- NIM card: Select one of C-NIM-WAN-2X, C-NIM-WAN-4S, C-NIM-4X, C-NIM-8T, C-NIM-8M, NIM-1T, NIM-2T, NIM-4T, NIM-16A or NIM-24A. This series lists no SM-form-factor or DSL modules, so those cards are not options.
- Cellular PIM: Select P-5GS6-R16SA-GL, or the regional P-LTEA7-NA, P-LTEA7-EAL or P-LTEA7-JP. LTE-Advanced pluggables are sold by region.
- Storage option: Choose the default 16 GB or the upgrade to 600 GB when the router is ordered.
- Third fan assembly: Add the additional third fan assembly for the -5 to 55 degrees C NEBS range. It is required for that range, so the base configuration does not cover it.
