C8231-G2 Description
The C8231-G2 is a Cisco 8200 Series desktop secure router for branch sites that keep gigabit LAN devices behind multigigabit WAN links. The router has 2x 1/10 GE SFP+ and 2x 2.5 GE mGig RJ-45 WAN ports, 19 Gbps of forwarding, 5 Gbps of IPsec, 700 IPsec tunnels and 8 GB of DRAM. The default 66W AC adapter carries no PoE, the 115W AC for PoE adapter adds a 30W budget, and the chassis has no NIM or cellular slot.

Key Features
Two WAN ports and two Flex ports run at 2.5 GE, while the four LAN ports stay at 1 GE. Fast links face the circuit side and local devices remain on gigabit copper.
The SFP+ cages take 1G or 10G optics, so a fibre handoff above the 2.5 GE copper rate lands directly on the router.
IPsec runs at 5 Gbps and SD-WAN at 4 Gbps. Threat protection is 1 Gbps with NAT, NGFW, IPS, URL filtering and malware protection enabled, backed by 8 GB of DRAM.
The default 66W AC adapter provides no PoE. With the 115W AC for PoE adapter the PoE+ WAN port draws from a 30W budget, enough for a single endpoint within that limit.
The router is rated 0 to 45°C at sea level, with storage down to -40°C and up to 70°C, which suits unconditioned cabinets at low altitude.
The chassis measures 1.14 x 8.1 x 12.23 in. and weighs 5 lbs. A rack-mount tray that holds the power supply makes the footprint 2.835 x 12 x 17.56 in.

C8231-G2 and C8235-G2 are desktop routers with the same 19 Gbps of forwarding, but C8231-G2 has four 1 GE LAN ports, 8 GB of DRAM, 1 Gbps of threat protection and a 30W PoE ceiling, while C8235-G2 has four 2.5 GE LAN ports, 16 GB, 2.4 Gbps and 120W. Sites with multigigabit LAN devices, a cellular PIM, more than 30W of powered endpoints or the 2.4 Gbps threat protection tier need C8235-G2. A site that needs an NIM slot and a 1 RU modular body with a 140 W internal supply orders C8231-E-G2, which keeps the 8 GB and 1 Gbps figures and raises the PoE ceiling to 120W. Both alternatives give up the 0 to 45 degrees C sea-level rating.

- PoE adapter: Add the 115 W AC for PoE upgrade adapter, which gives a 30 W PoE budget; the default is the 66 W AC external adapter. The default adapter carries no PoE budget, so the PoE+ port stays unpowered without the upgrade.
- Software release: Run Cisco IOS XE Release 17.18.1 or later, with Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Release 20.18.1 or later. The mGig models start at 17.18.1, while the 1 GE and 10 GE models in the same series start at 26.1.2 or 26.2.1.
