C8151-G2 Description
The C8151-G2 is the pluggable-cellular model in the Cisco 8100 Series, one of only two that accept an LTE or 5G module rather than carrying an embedded one. Its faceplate is two 1GE RJ-45/SFP combo WAN ports, two Flex ports and six LAN ports, and Cisco marks it SD-WAN Capable Yes with 900 Mbps of SD-WAN and 1 Gbps of Threat Protection published alongside 5.6 Gbps forwarding. Table scale sits at the higher 8100 tier with 500K IPv4 routes and 4K VRFs. The fanless chassis weighs 5.1 lb, draws 23W typical from a 66W supply, and starts at Cisco IOS XE 17.18.1.

Key Features
This model and C8161-G2 take a pluggable LTE or 5G module, so the radio can be chosen by region at order time and replaced independently of the router, unlike the C8151-C models whose 5G modem is embedded.
Cisco lists a 5G SA Global pluggable and three CAT7 LTE variants split across North America, EMEA with APAC and LATAM, and Japan, so a single part number covers a multi-region estate with the radio as the per-site line.
SD-WAN Capable is marked Yes while the minimum release stays at Cisco IOS XE 17.18.1, so an estate already qualified on that train reaches fabric membership without a software programme, which the 26.1.1 models require.
Six LAN ports arrive alongside 500K IPv4 routes and 4K VRFs, so a segmented branch can both terminate its devices and hold the table its VRF plan needs on one chassis.
Typical draw is 23W in a fanless 5.1 lb body, so adding cellular does not introduce a fan or a separate power feed for the radio.
SD-WAN throughput is published at 900 Mbps, which sits below the 5.6 Gbps forwarding figure and is the number to size against when the site’s traffic runs through the overlay.
Application Scenarios
Deployed where a fixed circuit lands on a combo WAN port and a pluggable LTE or 5G module provides the backup path.
Installed across countries where the router stays constant and the cellular pluggable changes to match local bands.
Placed where several VRFs separate traffic classes at a site that is managed as an SD-WAN endpoint.

- C8151-G2 and C8161-G2 are the two pluggable-cellular models in the series and share the WAN layout, forwarding tier, SD-WAN figures, table scale, chassis weight and software floor. C8161-G2 adds PoE on its LAN ports with an 80W output ceiling and takes a 150W supply instead of a 66W one.
- That PoE capability is the whole difference. A site with no powered endpoints gets identical routing, overlay and cellular behaviour from this model at a third of the supply wattage, while a site with access points or cameras cannot reach them from here at all.
- Against C8140-G2 the comparison runs the other way. Both carry ten gigabit positions and 5.6 Gbps forwarding on the same 17.18.1 train, but this model adds the cellular slot, SD-WAN capability and the 500K table for 3W more draw and 1.53 lb more weight.
- For deciding which SKU to order, check powered endpoints first, since that single answer moves the order to C8161-G2 and its 150W supply; then confirm whether cellular and fabric membership are both needed, because dropping them makes C8140-G2 the lighter equivalent at the same port count.
Selection Guide
1. Where Powered Endpoints Change The Model
C8161-G2 carries the same ports, throughput, tables and cellular slot but adds PoE with an 80W output ceiling and a 150W supply; a site with even one powered access point has to start there, because no adapter adds PoE to this chassis.
2. Pluggable Radios Against An Embedded Modem
This model and C8161-G2 take a removable LTE or 5G module while the C8151-C variants carry an embedded 5G modem; a estate that expects to change radio generation or move a unit between regions keeps that flexibility only with the pluggable models.
3. Fabric Membership Without A New Software Train
C8151-G2 is SD-WAN Capable on Cisco IOS XE 17.18.1, while C8131-G2 and the C8151-C models reach fabric capability only at 26.1.1 or later; an estate frozen on 17.18 can add fabric sites here without a qualification cycle.
4. When The Port Count Alone Does Not Justify The Weight
C8140-G2 offers the same ten gigabit positions and the same 5.6 Gbps forwarding at 3.57 lb and 20W; a routed site with no cellular or fabric requirement gains nothing from the extra 1.53 lb and the larger body here.
5. Sizing Against Nine Hundred Megabits, Not Five Point Six Gigabits
Overlay throughput is 900 Mbps while forwarding is 5.6 Gbps, so a branch whose traffic is mostly SD-WAN should plan against the smaller figure; the gap between the two is the largest in the 8100 range.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Powered endpoints |
Confirm no endpoint will draw power from the router. |
This model is not a PoE power sourcing device; a powered device needs C8161-G2 and its 150W supply. |
|
Cellular pluggable region |
Confirm the module matches the deployment region across P-5GS6-R16SA-GL, P-LTEA7-NA, P-LTEA7-EAL and P-LTEA7-JP. |
A pluggable outside its documented region will not attach to the local carrier bands. |
|
Fabric participation |
Confirm the site will be managed as a Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN endpoint. |
If it will not, C8140-G2 offers the same ports and forwarding at lower weight and power. |
|
Overlay sizing |
Confirm the SD-WAN traffic plan stays inside 900 Mbps. |
Overlay throughput is well below the 5.6 Gbps forwarding figure and is the binding number for fabric traffic. |
|
Combo port media |
Confirm whether each combo WAN port will use copper or an SFP optic, and order optics accordingly. |
Both cages accept either and an optic is a separate line item per port. |
|
Software image floor |
Confirm the image is Cisco IOS XE 17.18.1 or later. |
Staging below the floor leaves the router unsupported after installation. |
|
Mounting hardware |
Confirm which of rackmount, desktop, under-desk or DIN-rail mounting the site uses and that the accessory is on the order. |
Each mounting position needs its own hardware. |
