The C8235-E-G2 is the security-services tier of the Cisco 8200 Series modular routers, a 1RU branch platform with 2x 1/10 GE SFP+ and 2x 2.5 GE mGig RJ-45 UPOE+ WAN ports plus one NIM slot and one PIM cellular slot. It is one of a matched pair with C8231-E-G2, and the two are identical in ports, slots, power, chassis and software floor; what separates them is 16 GB of DRAM against 8 GB and 2.4 Gbps of Threat protection throughput against 1 Gbps. Forwarding, IPsec and SD-WAN figures are the same 19, 5 and 4 Gbps on both, so the premium here buys inspection capacity rather than routing capacity. Key Features
Threat protection runs at 2.4 Gbps against the 1 Gbps of the matched model, and since Cisco measures that figure with NAT, NGFW, IPS, URL filtering and malware protection all enabled, the gap is what a branch actually gets when the full security stack is turned on.
DRAM is 16 GB rather than 8 GB, which is the resource that supports running those inspection services concurrently rather than choosing between them, and it is fixed at order time with no field upgrade documented.
The NIM slot takes WAN, LAN, serial or async cards after deployment, so a branch whose circuit type changes keeps the chassis; the fixed models in this series have no bay at all.
Beyond the 140 W AC internal default, Cisco lists a 150 W AC for PoE adapter, a secondary PSU adapter option, a 150 W AC-DC and a 150 W DC-DC supply, so AC, DC and PoE-capable configurations all come from the same part number.
The -5 to 55 degrees C NEBS range is available but Cisco notes it requires an additional third fan assembly, so carrier placement is a two-line order rather than a rating the chassis carries out of the box.
