The C8455-G2 is the lower-density member of the Cisco 8400 Series Secure Routers, a 1RU fixed platform for campus edge deployments where every port is optical. Its twelve WAN ports split into 8 x 1 GE SFP, 2 x 1/10 GE SFP+ and 2 x 10/25 GE SFP28, with no copper ports, no expansion slots and no cellular bay anywhere in the series. Forwarding runs at up to 67 Gbps with 31 Gbps of IPsec, DRAM is 32 GB by default, and the chassis carries NEBS GR-1089 and GR-63 criteria levels that put it into carrier and utility sites alongside enterprise campuses.

Two 10/25 GE SFP28 ports are fixed on the chassis, so a campus edge that has outgrown 10G reaches 25G without consuming a slot or waiting for a line card, which is what the modular routers in the 8200 and 8300 lines would require.
Every one of the twelve WAN ports takes an SFP, SFP+ or SFP28 optic and none is copper, so media choice is made per port at the optics line rather than fixed by the chassis, and a mixed fiber plant does not force a media converter.
The same router accepts a 250W AC, 400W DC or 400W HVDC supply, so a campus building, a DC plant and a high-voltage DC facility all take the same part number with a different supply on the order.
Cisco lists GR-1089 and GR-63 criteria levels for the series, which opens central-office and utility cabinets that a commercial-only rating would exclude, and the -500 to 10,000 foot altitude range covers sites below sea level as well as high-altitude ones.
DRAM starts at 32 GB and storage at 64 GB with 600 GB and 2 TB options, roughly double the branch routers in the 8200 and 8300 lines, which is what supports the 5.8M route table this platform carries.
Cisco also lists 8455-G2-MX, which runs MX 19.2 and is operated from the Cisco Meraki dashboard instead of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager, so the management plane is chosen at the part number rather than configured later.

- C8455-G2 and C8475-G2 share a series, a software floor and a 5.8M route table, so the split between them is purely density: 2 versus 4 SFP28 ports and 2 versus 8 SFP+ ports, bought with 24 Gbps more forwarding and 4.25 in. more chassis depth. A campus edge terminating fewer than ten optical circuits gets no return from the larger model.
- Stepping to C8550-G2 changes what the router is for rather than how many ports it has. It drops 25 GE entirely and standardises on 12 x 10GE, but nearly triples the tunnel count to 10,000 and lifts routes to 8M, so it answers scale rather than port speed.
- SD-WAN throughput does not follow forwarding throughput across this group. C8475-G2 leads at 21.7 Gbps while C8550-G2 forwards faster at 115 Gbps but delivers only 19 Gbps of SD-WAN, so a design whose traffic is mostly overlay should size against the SD-WAN column rather than the forwarding column.
- For deciding which SKU to order, count the circuits that need 25 GE first, because that single number separates C8455-G2 from C8475-G2 and rules out C8550-G2 altogether; then check tunnel scale, since only C8550-G2 goes past 3,500. NEBS, altitude range and the optical-only faceplate are common to all three and cannot break the tie.

2. Where The Tunnel Count Decides Instead Of Ports
Both 8400 models stop at 3,500 IPsec tunnels while C8550-G2 carries 10,000; an SD-WAN design whose spoke count passes 3,500 has to move to the 8500 Series regardless of how few ports it needs, since no 8400 configuration raises that ceiling.

The 250W AC supply is one of three options alongside 400W DC and 400W HVDC on the same chassis, so site power narrows the supply rather than the router; a building that later converts from AC to a DC plant replaces the supply and keeps the same part number.
