C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E Description
The C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E is a fanless Cisco Catalyst 9200CX compact switch that packs 12 10/100/1000 data ports and two fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks into a chassis small enough for a wall, DIN rail, or under-desk mount rather than a rack. Two fixed 1G copper uplinks plus a dedicated 1G copper PD uplink handle wired backhaul, and the switch has no internal power supply of its own: it takes power either from an upstream 802.3bt Class 6 PSE over the PD uplink at up to 51W, or from an optional external AC or DC auxiliary adapter, and it does not stack with other Catalyst 9200 hardware. The -E suffix carries a Network Essentials Network Stack license, which on this hardware covers static and Routed Access routing, PBR, VRRP, 802.1X, and MACsec-128, the feature set that a data-only access role at 70 Gbps switching bandwidth typically needs without paying for the Advantage tier. Because the chassis skips an internal power supply and a cooling fan, it fits deployments that a standard closet switch was never built for: desks, walls, and equipment cabinets outside a data closet.

Key Features
Network Essentials on this hardware includes static routing, Routed Access (RIP, EIGRP Stub, OSPF up to 1000 routes), PBR, VRRP, 802.1X, and MACsec-128, enough routing and access control for a fixed-port access role without an Advantage license.
Because the PD uplink can draw up to 51W from an upstream 802.3bt Class 6 port, a single Ethernet run doubles as the data uplink and the only power connection the switch needs.
At 1.73 x 10.6 x 6.5 in and 4.0 lb, the chassis is small and light enough for wall, DIN rail, or under-desk mounting instead of the 19-inch rack space a standard access switch assumes.
The two 10G SFP+ uplinks are built into the chassis rather than served through a network module slot, so the fiber uplink capacity is fixed at purchase and does not depend on a separate module order.
The fanless design removes the periodic fan and filter maintenance that a closet switch needs, along with the front-to-back clearance a fan-cooled chassis requires around it.
Model-driven telemetry, SPAN/RSPAN mirroring, sampled NetFlow, and NETCONF/RESTCONF/YANG programmability all ship as part of this switch’s Network Essentials feature set, so automation and monitoring tooling can be built against it on the installed license.
Application Scenarios
Mounted under a desk or shelf next to the equipment it serves, in an office setting where a silent, fanless switch matters more than rack-mount conventions.
Deployed as the only switch in a small office or satellite location that needs 10G uplink capacity and basic Layer 3 access control but has no requirement for BGP peering, PTP timing, or MACsec-256.
Installed on a wall-mount tray inside a utility or equipment closet that was not built with 19-inch rack rails, using the PD uplink to avoid running a separate power circuit to the location.

- The C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E and C9200CX-12T-2X2G-A share identical hardware, PD input behavior, and the 70 Gbps switching path; the only reason to move up to the -A hardware is a confirmed need for BGP, PTP, or MACsec-256, since Network Essentials on this platform already covers static routing, Routed Access, PBR, VRRP, and MACsec-128.
- Against C9200CX-8P-2XGH-A, the C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E gives up a built-in 240W PoE budget and the Advantage license but keeps four extra data ports and PD-based power sourcing; a deployment that needs to power endpoints such as phones or cameras directly from the switch needs the C9200CX-8P-2XGH family regardless of license tier, while a deployment that only needs data ports fed from an upstream PD source stays on the C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E.
- Cisco has not published an in-place Network Stack upgrade PID from Network Essentials to Network Advantage on this chassis, so a deployment that expects to need BGP, PTP, or MACsec-256 later has to plan for a hardware swap to the -A SKU rather than a license-only upgrade after the C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E is already installed.
- For deciding which SKU to order in this group, confirm first whether the routing plan ever requires BGP, PTP, or MACsec-256, then confirm whether the site needs PoE output to endpoints or only PD-based input power, since port count and fiber uplink layout do not separate the C9200CX-12T-2X2G-E from its -A sibling.
Selection Guide
1. Rule Out BGP, PTP, And MACsec-256 Before Committing To Essentials
Network Essentials on this chassis has no path to BGP peering, PTP timing, or MACsec-256; a deployment plan that might add any of the three within the switch’s service life is better served ordering the Advantage hardware from the start rather than discovering the gap after install.
2. OSPF Route Count Is A License Limit Here, Not A Hardware One
Routed Access under Essentials caps OSPF at 1000 routes on this switch even though the chassis and forwarding path are unchanged from the Advantage SKU; a site sizing past that route count needs the Network Stack license change, which on this hardware means a different SKU.
3. Auxiliary Adapter Backs Up An Unreliable Upstream Port
When the upstream port cannot be confirmed to negotiate 802.3bt Class 6, ordering the optional auxiliary adapter alongside this switch avoids a install-day surprise where the PD uplink cannot draw enough power to bring the switch up.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Power source selection |
Confirm whether the site will power the switch through the PD uplink (802.3bt Class 6, 51W) or through the optional AC/DC auxiliary adapter. |
The switch ships with no internal power supply, so the power path must be decided and ordered before install. |
|
Software subscription term |
Confirm the Cisco Catalyst or Cisco DNA subscription term (3/5/7-year) matches the Network Essentials hardware tier. |
A mismatched subscription tier can block Smart Licensing activation. |
|
Console cable type |
Confirm a USB Micro-B cable or the CAB-CON-USBRJ45 adapter is available for initial configuration. |
The C9200CX console port is USB Micro-B, not the RJ45 or mini-USB used on C9200/C9200L. |
