C9200-48T-A Description
The C9200-48T-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink stackable access switch built around 48 non-PoE 1G copper data ports and the Network Advantage license tier, aimed at dense wiring closets that terminate switches, routers, and other unpowered equipment while still needing local routing and network segmentation. Uplink speed is set by the network module dropped into the single field-replaceable uplink bay rather than by the chassis itself: the C9200-NM-4G brings 1G aggregation and the C9200-NM-4X brings 10G, so the same hardware line item covers either uplink plan, or the C9200-NM-BLANK when no module is needed yet. A single default PWR-C6-125WAC supply runs the switch with no PoE output at all, matching the lower power class Cisco assigns to the data-only variant, and a second PWR-C6-125WAC can be added strictly for power redundancy. Switching capacity lands at 176 Gbps standalone, rising to 336 Gbps when the switch joins a StackWise-160 stack of up to eight modular Catalyst 9200 members behaving as one virtual switch, and both the power supply and fan modules are field-replaceable so a closet visit does not turn into a chassis swap. Network Advantage on this hardware layers EIGRP, HSRP, IS-IS, and VRF-lite, VXLAN, and LISP segmentation over the Layer 2 and Routed Access base that Network Essentials already covers.

Key Features
The Network Advantage license adds EIGRP, HSRP, IS-IS, and VRF-lite, VXLAN, and LISP segmentation on top of Network Essentials, so a 48-port data closet can enforce department or tenant boundaries locally across the full port count instead of forwarding everything upstream at Layer 2.
Cisco pairs this data-only model with the PWR-C6-125WAC supply instead of the 600W or 1KW classes used on the PoE+ variants, keeping the power footprint low for a 48-port closet where none of the downlinks need to energize an endpoint.
The single network-module bay takes either the C9200-NM-4G for 1G aggregation or the C9200-NM-4X for 10G, so the uplink decision rides on the module line item and does not lock in the switch hardware itself.
Up to eight modular Catalyst 9200 switches join one 160 Gbps StackWise-160 ring that behaves as a single virtual switch with up to 384 access ports, so a 48-port chassis reaches that ceiling faster than the 24-port sibling while keeping one management plane and sub-50ms stateful failover.
The power supply and fan modules on this modular Catalyst 9200 line are FRU parts, so a failed unit is swapped at the rack instead of forcing a full chassis replacement.
Port-based 802.1X authentication, MACsec-128 link encryption, model-driven telemetry, and sampled NetFlow are all part of the Network Essentials layer under this switch’s Network Advantage license, so access control and traffic-visibility tooling are available independent of the Advantage-only routing protocols.
Application Scenarios
Deployed where all 48 downlinks connect switches, routers, printers, or desktop equipment that draws no PoE, keeping the power budget out of scope for the switch order entirely.
Installed where VRF-lite, VXLAN, or LISP segmentation needs to start at the closet switch across a full 48-port footprint to keep tenant or department traffic separated before it reaches the rest of the campus fabric.
Used as a member in a StackWise-160 stack that standardizes on Network Advantage across the ring, extending routed access capacity at 48 ports per chassis without adding a second management plane.

- Stepping down to C9200-24T-A halves the data port count to 24 and drops standalone switching capacity to 128 Gbps while keeping the identical Network Advantage tier, modular uplink bay, and PWR-C6-125WAC power class; that move only pays off once the closet’s non-powered port demand is confirmed to stay near or under 24 ports, since C9200-48T-A carries no PoE budget either way.
- Adding PoE+ capability, C9200-48P-A keeps the same 176 Gbps switching capacity and modular uplink bay but steps up to the PWR-C6-1KWAC power class for a 740W/1440W PoE budget, a move that only pays off once some of the 48 ports need to power phones, cameras, or access points; C9200-48T-A stays the right fit while every downlink terminates non-powered gear.
- C9200L-48T-4X-A matches the same 48 data ports and an identical 176 Gbps standalone switching capacity, but it locks uplinks at a fixed 4x 1/10G SFP+ bank, halves stack bandwidth to StackWise-80, drops stacked switching capacity to 256 Gbps, and runs on the older Fuji 16.9.2 software baseline instead of Gibraltar 16.10.1; that trade only makes sense once the uplink speed choice is already settled and the network-module bay’s flexibility to change uplink media later is not needed.
- For deciding which SKU to order, settle the PoE requirement first, since only C9200-48P-A in this group adds a PoE budget; then size the non-powered port count against the smaller C9200-24T-A; and last decide whether the uplink media needs to stay open-ended, which is the line separating C9200-48T-A from the fixed-uplink C9200L-48T-4X-A at the same port count and switching capacity.
Selection Guide
1. Powered Endpoint Requirement Routes To C9200-48P-A
When even a portion of the 48 downlink ports is confirmed to power phones, cameras, or access points, C9200-48P-A carries the identical modular-uplink hardware and Network Advantage tier on the larger PWR-C6-1KWAC power class with a 740W PoE budget; staying on C9200-48T-A only holds while every port is confirmed to terminate non-powered equipment.
2. Closet Sized Under 24 Ports Fits The Smaller Chassis
When a closet’s non-powered port count is confirmed to stay near or under 24 ports, C9200-24T-A carries the same modular-uplink Advantage role and the identical 125W power class in a smaller-capacity chassis instead of leaving half of a 48-port C9200-48T-A unused; moving to C9200-48T-A only makes sense once the port count is expected to grow past 24.
3. Fixed Uplink Trade Against C9200L-48T-4X-A
C9200L-48T-4X-A delivers the same 48 data ports and matching 176 Gbps standalone switching capacity, but with 4x 1/10G SFP+ uplinks fixed at the factory, StackWise-80 in place of StackWise-160, and the older Fuji 16.9.2 software baseline; taking that configuration gives up the network-module bay’s ability to change uplink media later, so it only fits designs where the uplink speed is already locked in.
4. No In-Place Path Off The 48-Port Essentials Tier
An order for C9200-48T-A pairs with the Advantage 48-port subscription group, C9200-DNA-A-48 or C9200-DNX-A-48-3Y/5Y/7Y, while Cisco publishes no in-place PID to move the same hardware from Network Essentials to Network Advantage after the fact; a closet that starts on the Essentials-tier C9200-48T-E and later needs EIGRP, HSRP, IS-IS, or VRF-lite/VXLAN segmentation has to reorder as C9200-48T-A rather than license-upgrade the installed chassis, so the tier decision belongs at the initial 48-port order, not after install.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Exact license suffix |
C9200-48T-A carries Network Advantage; the -E suffix on identical hardware carries Network Essentials |
The perpetual Network Stack tier is set by the hardware PID and cannot be license-upgraded in place |
|
Matching subscription tier |
An Advantage-tier term subscription from the 48-port group, such as C9200-DNA-A-48 or C9200-DNX-A-48-3Y/5Y/7Y |
Every Catalyst 9200 order requires a matching-tier Cisco DNA or Cisco Catalyst subscription under a mandatory Smart Account |
|
Uplink module line item |
One of C9200-NM-4G, C9200-NM-4X, or C9200-NM-BLANK is on the order |
The switch must run with a module or blank installed in the uplink bay, and the mGig-only C9200-NM-2Y/C9200-NM-2Q modules do not apply to this model |
|
No PoE assumption |
Confirm the design does not expect any PoE budget from this model |
The data-only C9200-48T-A ships with the 125W PWR-C6-125WAC supply and provides no PoE output at all |
|
Stack kit inclusion |
C9200-STACK-KIT plus stack members at the same license level |
The kit is not included by default, and StackWise-160 members must share the license tier |
|
Power cord selection |
A country-specific CAB-TA cord rated for the 125W supply class (10A) |
An under-rated or wrong-plug cord blocks power-up at installation |
|
Software baseline |
Cisco IOS XE Gibraltar 16.10.1 or later |
16.10.1 is the introductory release for this model, and earlier releases cannot run it |
