C9200L-48T-4X-E Description
Fixed at 4x 1/10G SFP/SFP+ uplinks and 48 non-PoE copper data ports, the C9200L-48T-4X-E is the Network Essentials build of this Catalyst 9200L hardware, reaching 176 Gbps standalone switching capacity and 256 Gbps once stacked into a StackWise-80 ring of up to eight members. The Essentials tier on this hardware already covers Layer 2 switching, static routing, Routed Access with RIP, EIGRP Stub, and OSPF up to 1000 routes, PBR, PVLAN, VRRP, QoS, 802.1X, and MACsec-128, which matches most closets terminating non-powered switches, printers, and desktops without a local routing or segmentation requirement. A single default PWR-C5-125WAC power supply covers normal operation, and because the model carries no PoE budget at either license tier, a second supply only buys redundancy against a unit failure rather than any added power headroom. Cisco ties this Essentials entitlement permanently to the C9200L-48T-4X-E hardware PID, distinct from the identical C9200L-48T-4X-A hardware that ships with Network Advantage instead.

Key Features
Network Essentials on this hardware already covers Layer 2 switching, static routing, and Routed Access with RIP, EIGRP Stub, and OSPF up to 1000 routes, so a 48-port closet that only needs basic routed connectivity is not paying for VRF-lite, VXLAN, or LISP segmentation it will not use.
The 4X model places four 1/10G SFP/SFP+ uplinks directly on the chassis, so the uplink decision is settled at order time rather than through a separate network-module line item, keeping the bill of materials to a single hardware PID.
Up to eight C9200L-48T-4X switches join an 80 Gbps StackWise-80 ring behaving as a single virtual switch with sub-50ms stateful failover, letting an Essentials-tier closet scale port count without adding a second management plane.
Because this model ships with no PoE budget at either license tier, a second PWR-C5-125WAC only adds power-supply redundancy, which simplifies procurement for closets that are confirmed to terminate non-powered gear only.
The base Network Stack tier runs CLI/Web UI, and attaching a Cisco Catalyst or Cisco DNA subscription unlocks Catalyst Center or Meraki dashboard management on this same Essentials-tier hardware without changing the switch PID.
A beacon LED viewable from either end of the chassis pinpoints one stack member during a moves-and-changes visit, and a built-in passive RFID tag lets facilities scan the unit into an asset system without reading a printed serial number off the case.
Application Scenarios
Deployed where 48 copper ports terminate desktops, printers, or other non-powered equipment inside a single VLAN or basic routed segment, with no local requirement for VRF-lite, VXLAN, or LISP-based traffic separation.
Installed in a branch office wiring room where routing needs stop at static routes or RIP/EIGRP Stub-level Routed Access rather than a full dynamic routing or segmentation deployment.
Added as a member in an existing StackWise-80 ring of Essentials-tier C9200L-48T-4X switches to grow non-powered port count under one management plane without introducing an Advantage-tier license line.

- C9200L-24T-4X-E carries the identical fixed 4x10G uplink layout and Network Essentials tier at half the access port count and a lower 128 Gbps standalone switching capacity, so a design that only needs 24 non-powered ports can settle for the smaller model instead of provisioning 48 ports it will not fill.
- Where C9200L-48P-4X-E keeps the same 48 ports, uplink layout, switching capacity, and forwarding rate but swaps in a PWR-C5-1KWAC supply for a 740W PoE budget, C9200L-48T-4X-E has no power budget to draw on at all; a design that later needs to power even a handful of phones or access points has to move to the PoE+ model rather than add a second supply here.
- C9200-48T-E matches the same 176 Gbps standalone capacity and Network Essentials tier but trades the fixed 4x10G uplinks for a modular network-module bay and StackWise-160 stacking that lifts stacked capacity to 336 Gbps; that upgrade path only matters once the uplink media might change after the order or the stack needs to grow past the 80 Gbps ring, since C9200L-48T-4X-E has no modular bay to swap the uplink later.
- Since Cisco has no in-place PID to move this hardware from Network Essentials to Network Advantage, a routing or segmentation requirement that grows past the Essentials Routed Access ceiling forces a new-hardware order of C9200L-48T-4X-A rather than a license-only change; for deciding which SKU to order, settle the routing and segmentation requirement first, since that is the one dimension this Essentials-tier group cannot absorb without a hardware change.
Selection Guide
1. When Essentials-Tier Routing Already Covers The Closet
C9200L-48T-4X-E includes Layer 2 switching, static routing, and Routed Access with RIP, EIGRP Stub, and OSPF up to 1000 routes, which is enough for a closet that does not need EIGRP, HSRP, IS-IS, or VRF-lite/VXLAN/LISP segmentation; once any of those Advantage-only features become a requirement, the identical hardware ordered as C9200L-48T-4X-A is the only way to get them, since Cisco publishes no in-place upgrade PID between the tiers.
2. Escalation Path Once Segmentation Becomes A Requirement
If VRF-lite, VXLAN, or LISP-based tenant separation becomes a requirement after this switch is already deployed, the fix is a new C9200L-48T-4X-A hardware order rather than a license upgrade on the existing unit; planning for that possibility in advance avoids a forced hardware swap once the segmentation need surfaces.
3. Powered Endpoint Requirement Forces A Model Change
Because C9200L-48T-4X-E carries no PoE budget at either license tier, a requirement to power IP phones, cameras, or access points on any of the 48 ports means moving to C9200L-48P-4X-E, which keeps the same port count, uplink layout, and switching capacity on a PWR-C5-1KWAC supply that adds a 740W PoE budget.
4. Uplink Media Lock-In Versus The Modular C9200-48T-E
Choosing the fixed-uplink C9200L-48T-4X-E over the modular-bay C9200-48T-E settles the 10G uplink media at order time and gives up the ability to change uplink type or grow past StackWise-80 later; that trade only holds once the uplink speed and stack size ceiling are both already confirmed for the deployment.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Exact license suffix |
C9200L-48T-4X-E carries Network Essentials; the -A suffix on identical hardware carries Network Advantage |
The perpetual Network Stack tier is fixed by the hardware PID and cannot be license-upgraded in place |
|
Matching subscription tier |
An Essentials-tier term subscription from the 48-port group, such as C9200L-DNA-E-48 or C9200L-DNX-E-48-3Y/5Y/7Y |
Every Catalyst 9200L order requires a matching-tier Cisco DNA or Cisco Catalyst subscription under a mandatory Smart Account |
|
Stack kit inclusion |
C9200L-STACK-KIT plus stack members at the same license level |
The kit is not included by default, and StackWise-80 members must share the license tier and cannot mix with C9200 modular-uplink switches |
|
Second power supply |
Whether a second PWR-C5-125WAC is needed for redundancy |
This model has no PoE budget, so a second supply only protects against a single-unit failure and does not raise any power ceiling |
|
Uplink optics compatibility |
The SFP or SFP+ optics selected for the fixed 1/10G uplinks are on the Cisco TMG Compatibility Matrix for this platform |
An unlisted optic may be rejected by the fixed uplink port even if the form factor fits |
|
Power cord selection |
A country-specific CAB-TA cord rated for the 125W supply class (10A) |
An under-rated or wrong-plug cord blocks power-up at installation |
|
Software baseline |
Cisco IOS XE Fuji 16.9.2 or later |
16.9.2 is the platform introductory release for C9200L hardware, and earlier releases cannot run it |
