The DS-C9124V-8EK9 is a Cisco MDS 9124V Series 64G Fibre Channel switch for SAN fabrics that connect servers and storage arrays at the rack edge. The 1RU switch has 24 SFP+ ports with 8 active, autosensing speeds of 8, 16, 32 and 64 Gbps, 1.5 Tbps of aggregate bandwidth and port-side exhaust airflow. The switch includes no optics, and each added block of 8 ports needs an M9124V-PL8 upgrade license, up to 24 active ports.

Product Performance
Key Features
Air leaves through the port side, so racks with a hot aisle at the cable face match the chassis. The exhaust fan trays and power supplies must follow the same direction.
Every port has 64 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth and negotiates down to 32, 16 or 8 Gbps, so one chassis can serve mixed generations of hosts and arrays.
Eight ports are active from the start. Each M9124V-PL8 license activates eight more, so a fabric can grow to 24 ports without a new switch.
The single 24-port group holds up to 24,000 buffer credits, with 1000 per port by default and up to 16,000 on a single port for longer links.
The switch runs on two 500W AC exhaust supplies. The 1200W DS-CAC-1200W takes 90 to 305 VAC or 192 to 400 VDC for sites with high-voltage feeds.
A single port channel can bundle up to 24 physical links, which lets inter-switch connections scale with load balancing across the whole port group.
Application Scenarios
In a server row, the switch connects HBAs on 8, 16 or 32 Gbps hosts to the fabric over its first 8 active ports. Autosensing lets older and newer hosts share the same chassis.
A storage team can attach the arrays’ 64G Fibre Channel controller ports directly to the switch, with each port holding its full 64 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth.
Where racks are cooled with air leaving through the port side, the exhaust airflow keeps the switch aligned with the hot aisle at the cable face.

DS-C9124V-8EK9 and DS-C9124V-8IK9 are the same 24-port 64G switch with 8 active ports and no optics, separated only by airflow: port-side exhaust on DS-C9124V-8EK9, port-side intake on DS-C9124V-8IK9, so racks where cold air enters at the port side need DS-C9124V-8IK9. DS-C9124V-8PEVK9 keeps the exhaust airflow and 8 active ports but adds 8 x 64G shortwave optics, which suits sites that want the first links cabled from one order. DS-C9124V-24PEVK9 is the exhaust model with all 24 ports active and 24 x 64G shortwave optics; a build that starts at 8 ports can instead add 8-port M9124V-PL8 licenses to DS-C9124V-8EK9 up to 24, and stays free to choose 32G or longwave optics.
Ordering Checklist
- Airflow-matched power and fans: DS-C9124V-8EK9 is port-side exhaust; order spares DS-CAC-500W-E= and fan tray DS-C32S-FAN-E=, or DS-CAC-1200W for bidirectional airflow. A power supply or fan tray with intake airflow reverses cooling in the exhaust chassis.
- Power supply type: Choose 500W AC DS-CAC-500W-E, or the 1200W AC/HVAC/HVDC DS-CAC-1200W where the site feed is high-voltage AC or DC. The supply must match the site feed, and only the 1200W unit covers HVAC and HVDC.
- Port activation: 8 ports are active at order; each M9124V-PL8 adds 8 ports, up to 24. Ports beyond the first 8 stay unusable until M9124V-PL8 licenses are on the order.
- FC optics: Add DS-SFP-FC64G-SW=, DS-SFP-FC64G-LW=, DS-SFP-FC32G-SW= or another listed FC SFP+, since no optics come with this PID. The switch arrives with empty ports, so each link needs optics as separate lines.
- Software subscription: Optionally add Premier (M91VXK9-P-1Y, -3Y, -5Y, -7Y) or Advantage (M91VXK9-A-1Y, -3Y, -5Y) as a separate order line; it is not part of this hardware PID.
