IE-1000-8P2S-LM Description
The IE-1000-8P2S-LM is the ten-port PoE model at the top of the Cisco Industrial Ethernet 1000 Series, combining 8 Fast Ethernet PoE/PoE+ copper downlinks under a 180W budget with 2 Gigabit SFP uplinks that carry fiber runs up to 50 miles (80 km). It belongs to Cisco's lightly managed industrial line, so a web device manager with SNMP v2/v3 and syslog handles port power, VLANs, IGMP snooping, and Sticky-MAC port security without any command-line work, and Plug-and-Play brings a replacement unit back with its configuration applied automatically. Powered from a 48-54V feed with redundant voltage inputs, equipped with a top-panel alarm output, and rated from -40°C to +70°C in a vented enclosure with hazardous-location compliance behind a cabinet, the switch concentrates the camera, wireless access point, and sensor drops of an outdoor cabinet or dense automation zone into a single DIN rail device.

Key Features
The 180W budget spans all 8 PoE/PoE+ downlinks, so a full cabinet of cameras, access points, and sensors lands on one switch instead of two smaller PoE units and their extra supply.
Ten total ports make this the largest IE 1000, giving lightly managed installations a per-cabinet ceiling before the design has to step up to a fully managed industrial family.
Both SFP slots take industrial optics for runs up to 80 km, and the second slot can hold a redundant or corridor-facing path where surveillance and ITS backbones daisy-chain between cabinets.
The top-panel alarm output (1.0A at 24VDC, 0.5A at 48VDC) surfaces switch faults on the cabinet’s existing dry-contact monitoring, keeping remote sites observable without SNMP polling infrastructure.
Per-port PoE, VLANs, and access control run from the web device manager, so the operations team that services traffic cabinets and pole enclosures can run the switch without network engineers on site.
A -40°C vented-enclosure floor plus Class 1 Div 2 and ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 compliance (with cabinet enclosure) covers unheated northern deployments and classified process areas with one PID.
Application Scenarios
Deployed at camera aggregation points where up to eight PTZ and fixed IP cameras draw PoE+ from one cabinet, with dual fiber uplinks closing a ring back to the video head end.
Installed along ITS corridors as the per-intersection node, powering detection and monitoring devices while the two SFP uplinks chain intersection cabinets over single-mode fiber.
Positioned in warehouse and plant-perimeter enclosures where wireless access points, badge readers, and sensors cluster past the four-drop mark and local power outlets are scarce.

- The IE-1000-8P2S-LM against IE-1000-4P2S-LM is a pure scale call inside the same PoE design: identical fiber uplinks, input class, and -40°C floor, with the order deciding between 8 drops under 180W and 4 drops under 120W, so the powered-device count and summed wattage at the cabinet pick the PID.
- IE-1000-6T2T-LM sits nearby on total ports but in a different class: it is a 12-24V data-only copper unit with a -20°C floor and no SFP slots, which serves tempered panels full of locally powered devices but cannot take over any camera, AP, or fiber-backhaul role from the IE-1000-8P2S-LM.
- For deciding which SKU to order, count powered drops first: five or more PoE endpoints, or a combined draw beyond 120W, lands on IE-1000-8P2S-LM; four or fewer fits IE-1000-4P2S-LM; and only an all-data-only cabinet should drop to IE-1000-6T2T-LM and its lighter supply class.
Selection Guide
1. Past Four Drops Or 120W
When the cabinet’s powered-device list reaches five endpoints, or the summed PoE draw of fewer devices pushes beyond 120W, this model’s 8 drops and 180W budget absorb the load; below both thresholds, IE-1000-4P2S-LM does the same job in a narrower power envelope.
2. Budget Headroom Planning
The 180W budget averages just over 22W per port across all eight drops, so a full cabinet of 802.3at class-4 endpoints cannot all draw maximum power at once; keep the summed device classes inside 180W or split heavy loads across cabinets.
3. Where Data-Only Still Wins
An eight-port class cabinet whose devices are all locally powered can run on IE-1000-6T2T-LM from a 12-24V rail at a fraction of the consumption, provided the -20°C floor and copper-only uplinks match the site.
4. Supply Class Locks The Budget
Delivering the full 180W requires an external supply sized for switch plus PoE, which points at the 240W PoE-capable unit (or 480W with expansion headroom); the 65W and 170W supplies cap usable PoE below the model’s budget.

Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Full-budget supply |
Order PWR-IE240W-PCAC-L= (or PWR-IE480W-PCAC-L=) when the design uses the whole 180W budget; smaller PoE supplies cap the usable budget. |
An undersized supply drops or refuses PoE loads during peak draw, which reads as random camera reboots in the field. |
|
Classified-area parts |
For Class 1 Div 2 sites, note that the 240W/480W -L supplies carry no hazardous-location certification; use certified supplies and the required cabinet enclosure. |
Mixing an -L supply into a classified cabinet fails site acceptance even though the switch itself is compliant. |
|
Optic temperature grade |
Keep uplink optics on -RGD industrial parts in unheated or hot cabinets; COM/EXT-grade SFPs derate the switch’s operating range. |
The -40°C envelope that justified the model quietly narrows with a commercial optic installed. |
|
Fiber plant match |
Verify SFP reach and mode per run (SX 220-550 m MMF, LX 10 km, ZX up to 70 km, BX single-strand 10-80 km). |
A reach or mode mismatch at the far end only appears at turn-up, after cabinets are sealed. |
|
Enclosure thermal tier |
Match the enclosure tiers: -40°C to +70°C vented, +60°C sealed, -34°C to +75°C with forced airflow. |
Sealed cabinets in summer heat exceed the derated ceiling despite the winter-driven purchase. |
|
Rack adaptation |
Add STK-RACK-DINRAIL= only for 19-inch rack installs. |
The native mount is DIN rail; rack builds stall without the kit. |
