The C9300-48S-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series stackable access switch for fiber-cabled campus buildings that route and segment traffic at the access layer. The switch has 48 1G SFP ports with no PoE, a modular uplink slot, 256 Gbps of switching capacity and the Network Advantage license, which adds BGP, VRF, VXLAN and MACsec-256. A stack of up to eight members must keep every switch on Network Advantage, and the hardware needs Cisco IOS XE 16.11.1a or later.

Every downlink is a 1G SFP cage, and the optic installed in each cage decides whether that run uses single-mode or multimode fiber on LC connectors. Powered endpoints cannot draw PoE from these ports.

Routing And Segmentation In Network Advantage

Network Essentials stops at routed access, with OSPF capped at 1,000 routes. Network Advantage lifts that cap and adds BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS and HSRP, the VRF, VXLAN, LISP, MPLS and Cisco TrustSec segmentation tools, and MACsec-256 encryption on the fiber links.

SD-Access And Bundled Advantage Services

Running the switch in an SD-Access fabric takes the Advantage tier of the Cisco Catalyst or Cisco DNA subscription. A 3-, 5- or 7-year Advantage term also includes ThousandEyes Network and Application Synthetics and a Cisco Spaces Extend license.

Uplinks Up To 40G By Module

The uplink slot takes Catalyst 9300 network modules: four 1G SFP ports on C9300-NM-4G, eight 10G/1G SFP+ ports on C9300-NM-8X, two 25G SFP28 ports on C9300-NM-2Y, two 40G QSFP+ ports on C9300-NM-2Q, or four Multigigabit ports on C9300-NM-4M. The 100G C9300X-NM modules fit only Catalyst 9300X switches, so 40G is the fastest uplink this chassis accepts.

StackWise-480 And StackPower

Up to eight switches operate as one StackWise-480 stack with 480 Gbps of stack bandwidth. Separately, StackPower joins the power supplies of up to four switches into a shared pool, or eight when an XPS-2200 is added.

Two Power Supply Bays

The chassis holds the default 715W AC supply plus either a second supply for redundancy or a blank module. The second bay must not run empty, because the blank keeps operating temperature and fan noise within their limits.

C9300-48S-A and C9300-48S-E share the same 48-port 1G SFP hardware, and only C9300-48S-A carries Network Advantage, so the Essentials model fits fiber closets that run Layer 2 and OSPF within 1,000 routes and need no BGP, VRF or MPLS. A C9300-48S-E can still move to Advantage after installation with a C9300-LIC= term such as C9300-48-E-A-5, which cannot sit on the switch order. Buildings with 24 or fewer fiber drops can use C9300-24S-A, which keeps the 715W supply and runs 208 Gbps of switching capacity. Where endpoints sit within copper reach, C9300-48T-A provides 48 copper data ports on a 350W supply at the same 256 Gbps.

Ordering Checklist

Software subscription: Order an Advantage term from the 48-port 1G fiber group, C9300-DNA-A-48S-3Y, -5Y or -7Y, or C9300-DNX-A-48S-3Y, -5Y or -7Y for Cisco Catalyst. The 48-port copper terms such as C9300-DNA-A-48-5Y cover a different model group.
Uplink module: The configurator adds C9300-NM-8X by default; keep it, change it to another C9300-NM module, or choose C9300-NM-NONE. The uplink slot still needs a module or a blank to run.
Second power supply: A second PWR-C1-715WAC-P is selected by default and C9300-SPS-NONE removes it. Without it the switch runs on one supply with a blank in the second bay.
Stack cables: A 50 cm StackWise cable and a 30 cm StackPower cable are added by default; C9300-STACK-NONE and C9300-SPWR-NONE remove them. Longer stack runs use STACK-T1-1M or STACK-T1-3M.
